I’ve been binge watching every chicken keeping 101 video I can find and yours was the first I’ve seen that had detailed info on chicken health and behavior. Thank you!!
My thoughts exactly! Bought my coop today, chicks next week . 🤪
Marsha Wallace How are your chicks doing?
@@justlookin2 we need answers
Same for me
Easter eggs are a really affordable item that helps hens learn where to lay
Great idea 🧐💡thanks!
The ducks layed eggs next to a few pool balls in the yard, so I was wondering if it would work for the chickens too🤣🤣🤣
Lots of people use ceramic eggs..Russian Easter eggs?
Golf balls..

@Carrie Davis That's really pretty big birds, (they grow fast)! hard to tame, but you'll learn a lot!

Best chicken keeping channel I've found so far! Thank you!
Hands down best video on raising backyard chickens. I'm about to add chickens to my backyard farm. Setting up my new homestead and teaching people to grown their own food. Thanks so much for
This is probably the best video on raising backyard chickens in that Trish goes into detail on the important topics without going off and talking about stuff that is unimportant. I like that she is organized, articulate, knowledgeable, and gets to the point. Great job, Trish! Thank you for taking the time to educate people like me who are interested in raising backyard chickens.
Very informative. I remember helping my Grandma feed her bittys when I was a boy back in the early 60's. The hen house was off in the milk cows pen which was about an acre. The small ones had their own room and yard on the end and the bigger ones had wooden coke boxes to lay in. Thanks for taking time out to make this video. -PawPaw
I like your personality and enthusiasm!

It was a joy watching you explain many things about the chicken.
Thanks a lot for great job you did.

This is the most descriptive A.B.C.'s of raising chickens I've ever watched. So nice. Different poo's... who knew?? Thanks.
Very good tutorial on the basics of raising chickens in the backyard. For someone who has never raised chickens I found your video extremely helpful and thorough. Your teaching style is very conducive to learning about raising chickens. Thank you for taking the time for posting such a good video.

One of the best videos on keeping chickens. Thank you for the practical advice!
I appreciate how much information you're giving in such a clear and concise way!
this is the best chicken explained video i have watched. thanks for the info
i live in an apartment. why am i looking into this stuff...
haha, me too!
iv had ducks and chickens in an appartment
+max penrose that's impossible stfu
max penrose I brought home 2 chicks from the farm one summer, cuz I felt sorry for the little fluffs in the box. and they lived pretty nicely with me until 3 months old. They got too big so we had to take them back.
You can have "bantam" chickens. Basically they're just midget sized chickens that don't get any bigger than a parrot are aren't nearly as loud.
This was very informative!! Thank you so much for going into detail and explaining what should be done and why. Videos with so much information are hard to find this was very helpful!
Hands down this is one of the best chicken videos I’ve seen. Thanks for all the info 👍🏻
This was such a great video! Coming in with ZERO previous knowledge, this covered so much in a concise and informative way. Thank you for creating!
Thank you for posting this video. Very helpful.
I love how you keep your corrugated roof cool with grapevines! Great tip, thank you.
your chickens are so funny and cute! i laugh a lot when they run up to the camera.
I've watched a lot of these videos as my wife and I contemplate starting. Your set up is extremely nice and very well thought out. Honestly, If we do start our our, I'll probably try and copy your set up. It is large enough, provides proper protection, and most importantly, it looks very nice aesthetically.

“Aye lemme get in on that I’m a cannibal COCKADOODALDOO BTCH”
lovely chikens! but I smiled a bit when you said:
"every once in awhile you get a chicken that is so aggresive that you may need to.....uh..send them of to a farm to...eh... "get them out of your flock""
its like school where in some classes, students have full harmony but in some classes, bossing and bullying
"What happened to skittles, that stupid chicken you had that wouldn't stop being a jerk"
Me: **eating chicken nuggets** oh, a coyote took her or something idunno...
"... send them to a farm ... " Uh uuh send them to the stew pot. C'mon.... Lol
I laughed too 😂
You make it sound so easy and simple! Love this video. Very very helpful, thank you so much! X
I like your outfit. You’re slaying even in the chicken coop! ❤️🐔❤️
VERY GOOD VIDEO, ESPECIALLY FOR BEGINNERS .THAN YOU ,YOU HELPED QUITE A BIT
Great video!
I've watched so many chicken vids on YT since we have inherited a flock. This is the very best and easiest to watch that I've found. Thank you!
This was a great video! Very informative and easy to understand. I am about to get chickens and I am really excited!
This was a wonderful overview. Thanks
Ok... you seem very knowledgeable...BUT... there are a few places i felt you misspoke. One. Chickens dont digest food in their crop. Its ground up with the grit in their gizzards; which are in the body cavity. Two you worry too much about the food. They can have most things in moderation; including those you banned. Citrus is actually beneficial in small amounts and citric acid is used as a preservative in most chicken feeds. Avocado flesh is fine; the pits or skins should be avoided. Chickens can live up to 20 years believe it or not and routinely live more than six years. One other thing thats not something you said but something i noticed in your coop is that if it gets cold where you live you might want a wider roost where they can sit on their feet. Chickens dont need to grip the roost like most birds; they prefer for their feet to be flat. Ill watch again and if i see something else; i hope you wont mind if i mention it..
Summer Noybn Ok one more thing i HIGHLY recommend chicken water nipples; they can use them from the very beginning; though i usually supplement a little bit in the first few days. Then NO poopy water.
Summer Noybn Hi Summer, it's Roe from the King's Roost. Thanks so much for additional detailsl. Great point about the poultry nipples. Our chickens loved them and I loved cleaning the waterers less often. I even carry them in my store. Unfortunately, at our house, we have hard packed clay soil, so the area around the waterer became permanently wet (and a little smelly) so we had to give up on them.
Summer Noybn Hi Summer! Trish, here. Thanks for the excellent feedback. There are lots of fine points to chicken keeping, as you know. Our video is intended as a broad-strokes intro-level get-started video. But of course, we want it to be accurate, nonetheless, so I'm grateful that you started this conversation. A couple thoughts based on your comments: Like Roe already mentioned-- water nipples are great, they keep the drinking water nice and clean, but they didn't work for us since there can be significant drippage and in our case, the earth below got soaked and smelly. Also, you are correct about the gizzard, of course. Speaking without a script at the time, I see now that I should have said that the crop is where digestion BEGINS by grinding the food. It's certainly a process many of us with teeth don't even think about, so I wanted to draw people's attention to its existence. And yes-- most table scraps and foods in moderation are fine for chickens, but I think it's important to alert people to the potential dangers of feeding omnivores, so they don't blithely assume their birds can eat whatever they want all the time. People can research further and find that there are exceptions to my general food restrictions, but I think it's a good place to start. In fact, all of what I say in this video is very general... a broad overview, a starting point only, certainly not intended to substitute for doing one's research thoroughly. This is an INTRODUCTION, something to watch before getting a flock-- a way to get an idea of what's involved. Also, people should know that while chickens can live up to 20 years, it's VERY rare, especially for layers that produce 4-6 eggs a week, which is what most people with backyard flocks will want. It's misleading to let people think that they will have birds live that long, when 3-5 is more common for urban layers. Very much appreciate your attention to the details and your excellent points. Thanks for watching and caring enough to respond! ~Trish
The King's Roost Thanks for replying back to me :). I just wanted to talk a bit more about the nipples.. cause there really shouldnt be much leakage; certainly not as much as there is spillage in a standard waterer... and dealing with that poopy water is one of the top ten disagreeable things about chicken keeping that i hear from people so i like to troubleshoot LOL. One question would be were you using vertical or horizontal nipples.. i get the best reviews from people using horizontal nipples though the argument there is with or without the little cups on them hehe. One user who had leakage found that there was not enough water weight behind the nipple to keep the valve closed since he was using it with half inch pvc pipe.. he upgraded to one inch and problem solved. As for leakage in one spot being a problem...if you are using your nipples with a bucket system you could always alternate the location of the buckets? You use a very different system of bedding than i do so i suppose that could highlight problems that the pine shavings disguise; ill have to check under my waterer to make sure there isnt a problem brooding that i dont know about :). As far as the lifespan thing.. i guess my thing is that i wanted people to know that its not uncommon for a hen to live quite a while past the time where she quits laying eggs so they arent shocked and think before hand about what they would do in that situation; if you know what i mean? I also wonder does that average take into account culling; or only natural deaths? Im still learning myself; I hope i never consider myself done learning' so swapping info like this is so much fun to me. I never thought of paint fumes causing a problem for chickens until i watched your video (too cheap to paint the coop when its inside my barn LOL) but now that will be something to keep in mind if and when i build an outdoor coop or want to freshen up the look of mine or my barn...Thanks for making this video; i can type all day long and most wont learn half of what they learn watching you for a few minutes; because you entertain as well as inform :) Nice "meeting" you!
Summer Noybn As you can see, we can talk about this all day as well. We may have to give the nipples another try! We were indeed using the vertical ones... they seemed to drip a little bit no matter how much water was in the bucket. But also, the chickens kinda shook their heads and flicked it around when they drank from the nipples. More importantly, I felt like they were sipping little itty bitty droplets and not getting enough water. In such a hot, dry climate, I was getting concerned about hydration. As far as age goes, I got that 3-5 year number from several books and farmers with big flocks. I suspect it may include culling. In our first small flock of 6, only one hen lived past five years, so it seemed to ring true in our experience. That said, I agree with you-- people should be clear that hens may not lay much past the first 3-4 years, although they may live longer than that. I should have mentioned that unless one is ok with euthanizing older hens (not me!) then a chicken owner will indeed have HENOPAUSAL birds at some point!
Thank you so very much for creating and sharing this video! It was clear and concise, knowledgeable, and well organized. I feel like I gained so much watching it and I really appreciate you! Please keep creating and sharing, peace blessings, positive vibes, and energy.
Dear Trish - this was an absolute delight to watch. Thank You very much.
What compost do you use for their run? We are nearly done with our coop and run and I love the idea of the organic compost over laying hay.
This was really informative and helpful. My aunt has chickens for eggs but I plan on taking the ones that are no longer laying from her.

I work at a place that has chickens and I once helped raise a rooster to be cuddly and friendly and I help raise chickens to be friendly like my pet silkie chicken named pompom. she loves water and sleeps on my shoulders.

I have watched so many videos and read way more articles. your video is by far the very bet, most informational one I have found. Thank you so much. I am going to push this video with my friends. Again, thank you for being so thorough.
An excellent primer on having chickens! Can't wait to have my own.
I was going to start off by only having a couple, but you convinced me that it is better to get a group so as to not have the problem of introducing new chickens later on.
OMG the first one you showed us looked EXALTY like mine?! And she was also the boss. Her name was Bubbles. The second one looked like hope!
What exactly is that at the bottom of your coop? I cant seem to find it online.
I'm a new chicken mom to 4 chicks and I love your videos. They're so informative and educational. I love y'alls setup as well, very very nice!
That was wonderful. I'm old and getting rid of my 4 chickens to a young couple. I wish I would have seen this when I first got them. Thanks.
dont give them garlics? I used to feed my serama chicks with garlic n ginger on rain season to prevent them from avian flu or bird flu.
btw, the chicken coop is really beautiful 😍
I've seen adding mashed garlic or cider vinegar to their water to prevent worm infections suggested several times (of course I didn't know this until too late). We give ours onions all the time too, which she says not to do.
She spends a **lot** more money on her flock than we do. Organic bedding?
Hahaa yea not many pet shop sell medicines for chickens in my country. I have no choice but to plant some herbs in my garden n let them free range eating those plants.
tanya simone the eggs won't take on a garlic taste unless you're really over feeding it to them, and even then, the chickens quit eating it. We put some finely chopped garlic cloves into their waterer so that they get the benefits of the garlic in their system (wormer, insect repellent, bacteriocidal, and immune booster) without them actually getting a chunk in their gizzard to grind up for several days.
Birds Buster I also feed mine an oatmeal garlic mash if I see anyone sneezing.
I have two hens of my own and all they do is eat sleep poop repeat
Don't forget about the eggs
You have to remember the eggs
We worship the eggs because the eggs provide
Eggs too

Really enjoyed your info that you included in your video about backyard chickens. I have been reviewing other people's videos and yours had really great and knowledgeable info.
loved your informative video, best I've seen so far!!! Keep up the good work, hope to see another one from you soon!
is it possible to keep an avairy of chickens and song birds
Galena Faye it depends, chickens can be aggressive towards other birds at times, but it is definitely possible to keep them together. I just wouldn't personally reccomend it. Armored pheasants and other types of pheasants are supposedly great with songbirds and other small birds. So if you were to get a mixed bird aviary, I might reccomend pheasants for a start. I would just be very watchful and careful of how you house your birds if you did chose to keep chickens together.
There's a lot of great stuff on the Internet, I would do a little research! :)
Hope this helped!
I can have "Up to one rooster" So i'm safe only having 1/4 rooster?
austenslost I have a rooster the size of a coke can do I think he qualifies LOL!

Thank you for all your helpful tips and advice !!
Thanks you included so much stuff that allot of people take for granted.
We have to be 175ft away from our neighbor's house and 50 ft away from our house. Thankfully we have the room. Our coop is further away that 175ft but cant your neighbor hear your rooster at 100ft away? That's not very far.
Interesting point. I think it would also be sensible to position the coop downwind of your neighbors' and your residences, to avoid offensive odors making life unpleasant.
Hens laying eggs without a rooster, eh ? Interesting, so is that why you need no rooster in the chicken coop?
BIG r unless you want fertilized eggs
Thank you. It was my first time watching. Very informative and easy to listen too.
Brilliant video, cleared up a few questions I had about my chickens!! Thanks x
"chemicals" "chemicals" "chemicals"
EVERYTHING IS MADE OF CHEMICALS
***** the point is that he is under the delusion that chemicals (i assume he is referring to additives and synthesized chemicals) are bad and that some how "naturally" produced product is good
despite the fact that "naturally" (if you can even call farming natural) produced products have more room for contamination and disease and with the addition of "chemicals" and a controlled enviroment there is almost no risk at all of contamination or disease
everything in known human existence is made of chemicals except possibly dark matter, and ironically, that being the only thing we know of that might not be made of chemicals, is the last thing you want in your omelette
