The thing that bugs me when people complaint they want to see more in-depth book reviews and deep dives, etc. THEY'RE OUT THERE. There are hundreds of small booktubers that do proper reviews and discussions, these people could find them if they just took a little time to search instead of just watching whatever CZcams and TikTok spits out at them.

I don't think it's a matter of not wanting to seem shallow. It just takes time to do research and who wants to do research for a hobbie? I've tried and it's actually quite hard and time consuming to go through multiple videos to see if you can find a new creator that matches your book interests.

Going though a ton of vids messes with your recommendations too. I spent a lot of time in the summer trying to find new planner and reader people. I watched at least an hour of time from some channels only to find out they are NOT at all what I wanna watch or be consuming, then have to take even more time to scrub my views and make sure CZcams don’t keep putting them in my recs or feed. It took me at least a week to get rid of specific accounts from my feed 🙃. I always give a channel at least a 3 video chance to see if they’re what I’m looking for. When vids averages 15-20 minutes, that’s not a small time investment only to find out you don’t vibe with someone’s content, opinion, tastes, or video styles

@@Imhrienyes 100% this! i find a new makeup channel and will watch at least 2 videos, but then not like them, or think i like them but then just not be interested in the majority of what they post, which messes with the algorithm! i never ever watch hauls so if i find a book channel and see 2 hauls in the most recent few (up to like 7 maybe) videos, i might not waste my time but if the other videos are reading challenges and recommendations and things i care about, i feel like i have to give them a chance and then it’s time consuming and i’ll often feel like i’ve wasted my time.

Regarding consumerism, the flipside is, we also need to support authors - we want them to earn money from their books! Especially true for new releases (which can be difficult to find elsewhere in any case), and indie authors. I get it when it comes to multiple copies and special editions, though, and I couldn't possibly afford to buy all the books I read so I do get it!

I really resonate with wanting to see more in-depth reviews in general. Of course, I get not feeling eloquent. But it doesn't really matter to me how "complex" a review is; I just want to hear what people like or dislike in books. It also helps me know if a book may be a good fit or not for myself.

  • @KateyOneMoreTime
    @KateyOneMoreTime Před 6 měsíci +10

I love this video idea, but I could t help thinking… have people forgotten that CZcams is a search engine?! As you said, there are people making all of the content people are asking for! On top of that, the algorithm is designed to serve you more of what you already watch, so if you’re tired of seeing haul videos, you gotta stop clicking on them! If you want to see more in depth reviews, seek them out, and click on them when the algorithm starts recommending them to you! As a small creator, there’s only so much we can do if viewers aren’t going to actively search out our ‘niche’ content. If you want authors outside of US/UK, maybe start by looking for some of us creators who live in other countries! Lots of us talk about books published in our countries/regions. The content is out there. It’s the same with publishing itself… Publishing is going to serve you up the generic stuff, if you want diverse or niche books, you’ve got to go looking for it.

i'm just a lowly viewer, but i think you made good points about how even though people say they want these things, the views don't always correlate. i started my booktube viewing on the lit-fic side and there are def women there. i've been watching rincey reads and mercy bookish musings for years. slow growing / shrinking channels because they just talk books without all the gimmicks.

Exactly what I was thinking about. I started watching booktube in 2012 and been following the creators you mentioned since they started, so these people are and have been here for ages.
I think sometimes people just get used to watching the same popular channels and don't branch out, so they might never find people with more niche interests. Also, lots of those super popular channels don't foster a sense of community in the same of collaborating with and shouting out smaller creators, which is totally their prerogative, but it does become an echo chamber. I've been exposed to loads of newer and/or smaller creators by following people who actively engage in the community, like Jess, bookslikewhoa, etc.

I've seen so many books with amazing summaries that ended up sucking or books with mediocre summaries that ended up being amazing. That's why I prefer wrap-ups over hauls, because then we get an idea if the book is actually good or not.

I honestly like a lot of these ideas and why am I all of a sudden thinking this is a sign to start my own channel?
2024 is my year of buying absolutely no books! I have close to 800 in my home and have only read a little over 1/4 of them. It’s time to actually read what I have and purge them if I don’t want to keep or reread them.
I only use my library for audio now, so I’d be so good at recommending audio! But also I want to use it more for print books because I won’t be buying any.
I use StoryGraph and Litsy instead of goodreads. But Litsy is so old, I’m not even sure it’s being updated anymore.

Great discussion. I definitely want to spend more time re-reading books next year. Re-reading old favourites sounds lovely. Haha, completely understand the point about making more detailed book reviews. I make a dedicated book review video for every book I read because I enjoy making them. But, like you say, book review videos don't get many views (in comparison to book haul videos, for example). And definitely appreciate the point about book hauls. I don't have the money to haul 30 or 40 brand new books every month. So it's always a little disheartening to see how well received those types of videos are when you don't have the means to replicate that yourself. And, also on the point of hauling a large number of books, it takes me around a week or so to read a book so hauling hundreds of books in a year just wouldn't make sense for me. Looking forward to reading everyone else's comments on these points now ☺

The point about having to dig deep for creators that suit your niche is my experience exactly. 😂 Once I finally find one person, then suddenly CZcams wants to cooperate with the recommendations.
I'm one of the people interested in audiobook reviews, as I don't see many. I'm the same with noping out of a book if I don't like the narrator, too.
I've started cutting out negativity in the content I consume, so I agree with not liking the whole "hate reading" trend. I don't care if it's less "nuanced" to only focus on positive things, I'd much rather watch people gush about things they like than what they don't.

I personally have stopped watching hauls and unhauls altogether. Sure I may get some recommendations, and I have in the past including books that I deeply love, but I like getting more information about the book and hauls often is just what's in the premise or advertisement for the book. This is also why I don't have a tiktok and booktok because the short video format means you won't get much in the way of information and therefore it is simply not for me. I am also surprised by the amount it cut my booktube down by. It's to the point where there are some I barely watch because they don't have much content outside of those and the other videos I no longer watch (book shopping and library tours or whatever they call the tour of their home library).

I'm a bit late watching this, but about the point of reading/reviewing books from past decades: I understand the point you made of needing more research and then the effort finding it vs for new books. But what I would do to read more older books is just go into my local library or second hand bookstore and automatically by browsing a certain genre or something, you might come by older books that just catch your eye. So the effort of research/cheching availability would be automatically solved.
For me, I would love that (honestly, I don't care if the book is from 2010 or 1970. But what I do appreciate is when the books that are being discussed didn't come out in the past couple of months. Cause my book consume is almost exclusively second hand. And it is very difficult or even impossible to get the newest books

I don’t mind rant reviews if people go into a book expecting to like it and get pissed off / disappointed, I personally think it’s bad taste to intentionally pick up a book for the sole purpose of hating on it. I know it’s usually overhyped books, but you knew you were not going to like it beforehand and just wanted to trash it, however deserved, which feels petty and cruel to me.
I think I’m in the minority here as they seem to be so popular.
What I do like are spoilery vlogs where the booktuber says what’s going on in the book and reacts to it, especially mystery thriller which almost never happens. As long as it’s clearly indicated that the book will be spoiled I love it 🥰

I personally don't see the difference in a book haul and a library haul video. The creators will still show us a lot of books and not read all of them right away (which is fine). And us, the viewers, will get the books we are interested in the way that is convenient for us - buy or loan. I, personally, don't see what will change. There might be more haul videos in the end as library books are free 😅

As a heavy fanfic reader, I haaaate that when I go to pick up an honest to god traditionally published book these days, the "blurb" makes it sounds like I'm filtering fanfic by my favourite tropes on AO3. I think one of the issues with binning GR is that other alternatives, like Storygraph, do not have international appeal. I use Storygraph as a complement to GR, but I can't see myself switching completely until they actually have editions of books that are not in English. It's a pain in the ass to try to find them, and most of the time they aren't even there, so you have to manually add them, which is a clunky and slow process.

I usually just like documenting my thoughts on what I read and I am content with that.
When it comes to reading for me, my shelf has mix of old books from the 80s or 90s on my shelf that can still be read today. Sure I have some modern reads on my shelf but I'd like my shelf to represent my taste as a reader; I'm in no rush in making a library overnight.
Nor am not a popular reader either, I usually get drawn to older books/older authors like Bram Stoker, Doyle , Lovecraft but I also love horror manga from Junji Ito and Kazuo Umezz.
At the end of the day I read for the enjoyment of reading; also libraries are a wonderful resource to reading a book there before actually putting money down on a permanent copy to add to your home shelf.

Reading anthologies has been really good in getting me back into reading after stopping during college, and I’d like to see more recommendations. Also I love film podcasts, but one the most interesting formats I’ve seen is with Random Horror Number Generator Podcast number 9, where they randomly select two categories within the horror genre, like clowns/ Latin America, and than watch a film that fits their two genres. It’s fun, because it opens it up to older and less popular films. Idk how practical that would be with books, but it has been a good way of learning about horror films I probably wouldn’t have.

Well, I’m both😂 for the most part yeah. I mean that’s what I’ve been trying to make content like. I personally use good raids, but I don’t think I’ve ever made a video about good grades.🤔I mostly just use it to track what I’m reading, for everything from work ,to school, to just for me. And I just love fantasy. It’s what got me into reading, as a kid and I still go back to it when I’m on a reading an adult. I have to buy a lot of weird books because, I also have a paranormal channel. unfortunately my Library doesn’t have many of those. If not has a decent election. I’m lucky I just don’t have as many as I need to have the time it’s annoying. But probably 90% are used if I can do it. I literally have two library cards in him considering buying more this year.😂 I break card for where I live and then a library card for where my Godmom lives. I grow up using audiobooks because of my dyslexia, so I literally have nostalgic narrators. So that would be really easy to add. I can very easily do a video about. The best books, that I’ve read this year that I haven’t heard talked about at all anywhere and some of them it’s criminal. Off the top of my head head out of the 10 best books I’ve read this year all my people color I think.🤔 i’d have to double check that number so grain of salt . I read a lot of nonfiction as well, so like I can easily share that too. I think nonfiction doesn’t get as much price because a lot of people view it as boring. Some of it is some of it is atrociously boring. There are nonfiction authors out there that are gorgeous, talented writers, and they don’t get talk to them. Like, Olivia Campbell and her book women in white coats. Fantastic it’s about the first pack of female doctors in the US.. the nonfiction book that actually make me ugly cry. The secret history of home economics. By Danielle Dreilinger. Just read the introduction, you’ll be hooked. Got this from the library. I’m seriously considered buying it almost bought multiple copies to gift for Christmas this year. It is that good highly First well researched she doesn’t hold back at all. And no one has been talking about the best new release I read from this year and nobody and it’s fantastic. OK so it’s a novella, and it is set on a spaceship and I don’t wanna give you more than that except the author is actually an astrophysicist. All of the science is spot on and woven into the narrative beautifully and it is the perfect length it I devoured this and I really hope she writes more. The Scourge Between Stars. By Ness Brown. And I believe she holds a PhD. I could be wrong though. And why I’m not putting Dr in front of her name. Just more of this more actual science people writing science-fiction please. And then when I just randomly picked up at the library one day. Go Library recommendations, I guarantee those authors are out there. Sometimes you have to hunt for them, but those fantastic authors do exist. I don’t know I’ve just never been someone that’s liked a lot of super hyped books. Occasionally, I think they’re worth the hype and they’re actually that good. But a lot of times I’ll read them and I’ll be like well. That was good but not phenomenal. Or i’ll read it and I just won’t get it at all. Like that milk made book from 😒 I thought it was horrible. I don’t know any other suggestions from anybody I am willing to listen

For example, when I look for a book in my language SG can't find it, so I have to find it on English language and then look for other editions ... too many steps ... GR can find books in another language immediately ... so I'm ok with GR videos, since as abs it is it's the best from other choices.

The only thing I will say is that please don't force yourself to read from Diverse authors or books(and this can be outside of just the topic) because you want to feel good about yourself. Like just pick up a book that actually interests you. Just choosing to pick a book because the author is Hispanic or has a disability, etc, and then forcing yourself to like it or be nice about it if you didn't actually like it, comes off as pity and shallow. Like keep the same energy yall have for white authors for p.o.c writers. I think that discussion is more about companies choosing to platform certain books that happened to always be white authors and they become the trend. So read outside the trend. But also, I feel like Americans, when speaking of diversity, they mean non-white American authors. Because to me diversity is anything outside from the country I'm from. I love looking for books from other countries and find translations. And again, I do it with the mindset that it's a genre or synopsis I'm interested in.

I also want to see fewer creators subscribed to/sponsored by multiple monthly boxes that include "tchotchkes". I'm going to disagree with you a tiny bit about nonfiction videos, lol. It is *so* hard to find people who do 50/50 nonfiction/fiction, even, and among those who do talk about nonfiction some of the time, the topics vary wildly. Conpared to fiction (where there are tons of people who have dedicated channels to genres like romance, fantasy, scifi, litfic), nonfiction gets so little love. Nonfiction is not a "genre," so you have Olive who reads a fair variety, but with an emphasis on nature and pop science, and some others who might talk about business books or history, but someone who reads nonfiction more widely is hard to find. I've been watching videos on BT for over 10 years, and regularly (a few times a month) specifically search for new videos about nonfiction. I actually started my own channel a couple years back, but deleted my 3 videos after deciding I didn't enjoy editing, lol. Maybe I should give it another go.
