We used Apple AirTags to track plastic reycling. Here's where they ended up.

  • Much of the nation’s plastic problem has to do with packaging. Whether it's food, water bottles, or cleaning supplies, you might think it's okay to buy items that display the triangle recycle symbol.
    But what happens once you put all of that plastic into the blue bin? Where does it go? We're working for you to track those plastic recyclables. So here's how we're going do it.
    CBS 8 anchor Neda Iranpour got a 4-pack of Apple AirTags to track their location through her iPhone. She used heavy-duty glue, she put them inside on the bottom of each container.
    She attached an air tag to a water bottle, a yogurt container, an orange juice bottle, and a wipes container. She also made sure the "find my" feature on her phone was in sync with each AirTag.

    The trouble is with these stories is: you can’t recycle an air tag. So, of course it’ll end up in the trash if the sorting is done well. Why not just ask the recycling center to watch how their process works?

    It could be that the Air Tags themselves tweaked the recycling process. The items tagged might have been rerouted from the normal recycling because of the Air Tags. This is not a good experiment.

    Everything goes to a transfer station and is handled from there. China, once one of the biggest handlers of U.S. recyclables has not been taking them. There are diminishing places for them to go and get processed.

      Another channel tracked an air tag from that transfer station in Orange County, and it went to the Riverside Dump. It wasn't recycled at all. None of it.

    It seems that the airtags didn't hold up very well. Because they are not recyclable, perhaps the plastics to which they were attached were rejected as "contaminated". Or they may have been crushed in the compacting process.
    Separating trash at home isn't difficult. I have four pull-out bins in my kitchen for steel cans and glass bottles (those bins at the recycling center are next to each other), aluminum cans, plastic bottles and incinerables. I have boxes for mixed paper and cardboard in the mud room. I save newspaper for a neighbor who uses it to start her woodstove.

    That's ridiculous, I remember when they said not to use plastic and tried to force paper bags, then the government said that paper was strangely no longer recyclable and implemented the plastic bag tax while trying to enforce that only plastic be recycled and that the consumer had to separate their plastics before they were collected to be recycled, it's all a scheme to try and keep stringing along the innocent. All they'll get from me is that if it's plastic, I throw it away in the recyclable, paper goes in the recycle, and trash goes in the garbage, I am most certainly not spending any of what little free time I have to sort out everything for who gets paid to sort things like that out. Maybe if someone ran the place, like someone with the right mind, who actually could provide better employment opportunities at waste centers, people wouldn't be feeling threatened to help out who the governemnt is supposed to help out, not my circus, not my monkeys, not my show

    "Most of the nation's plastic problem has to do with packaging." No, flip that. Most of the nation's plastic problem comes from consumption.

    • @Sandmouse6942
      @Sandmouse6942 Před dnem

      You did not specify "civillian consumption". All products recieved are 'consumeed', or they arent sold. The majority of plastic is used in industries like fishing. So the biggest producers AND consumers are big corporations, and we have no say in it. Do you think we can do anything about that? Then start a boycott of plastic packaging or something instead of moaning about it. We can easily have a closed loop of glass and other packaging (like hemp), and when it leaves the circle? It decomposes into organic matter or silica bits, or the glass shards get buried naturally. People side with big corporations when they blame it on regular people.
