Vlog number 4 and this is a tour of my canalboat from top to tail. It's still on chocks at a marina whilst I line up some maintenance to be done on it but will hopefully take to the water again in a few weeks - just in time for winter!

Thanks for the tour of your boat David, looks like you are going to have a lovely life and see some wonderful places... I have been watching Timothy West and his wife Prunella Scales on their narrow boat tours, such a lovely enjoyable time they share and l feel quite in awe of them...maybe a little envious too ☺ ..enjoy this beautiful weather on the water ☺ xx

Oh you have made my day ! I used to have a small cruiser on a trailer which my family and I took from Braunston,- up under Brum... out to the Spagetti junction ( Which I knew as the 78 tram from Gravelly Hill as I was born nearby !) round to Coventry and bac k. 40 years have passed since then and now at 90 it is your videos which keep me alive and kicking ! I just can't thank you enough.

@@CruisingTheCut I was watching a totally unrelated video to "longboats" or "canals" when it was suggested to watch your episode #209, the fuel boat couple. I was hooked immediately. I thought it was a documentary from the BBC. I did go to your website and discovered your past and knew this was too professional to be a retired cab driver.
The drone was a great addition to your productions.
I figure I'll be caught up on your adventures sometime this summer. If these early episodes are any indication of the marvelous journey ahead, I will need more tea and plenty of "biscuits"
      Have a great day!

I hope you enjoy your boat as much as we did back in the late 1960s when we bought our first boat (and had a 2½ year old and a 6 week old baby). We gave up in the mid 1970's but the canals are incredibly busy compared to 'our day' now, and there doesn't seem to be the characters that we knew then, but the tranquillity of the canals cannot have changed so much. Good luck and thanks for sharing your experiences.

Hi David, I thoroughly enjoy your Vlogs , having been around UK boats and canals most of my life as a boatbuilder. Now living in New Zealand and retired , enjoying real boating in New Zealand's South Island near Nelson on the north coast of the South Island.
Wondered if you might consider renaming your boat to "Davy Johns' Locker.!
Boating here is a real pleasure. I live near the beach so can use my boat only a few yards from our house in Anakiwa.
We bought a 2007 UK caravan a few years ago I think in 2017 a double axle Coachman 645 with central heating and air conditioning, freezer and microwave for about 8000 pounds UK and shipped it to NZ. Much cheaper than your DIY conversion and full head height of course with all the features you could want.
Just wondered why you went to so much trouble to convert a van when all was perfect with a caravan from 2007 with everything you need and like new all round.
    Keep up the good work,
    Peter.

As i said ive just started watching from episode 1
So as im retired on ill health ive plenty of time this winter
Inbetween studying for my radio amateur licence foundation test to watch your journey i was on cb in the 80.s actually met my wife on cb blind date but i always wanted to become radio ham ive persuaded her to let me have a 21ft antenna on our 270yr old cottage
Anyway back to matters nautical ill say this you come across very well and your manner is very good pleasant and informative
Its like you the boat and the canal were made for each other
Its only just this week i started watching you so
Ive plenty to go at this winter

I know this is an early vlog... how nice to see one of your mandatory spiders... hiding on the gas cooker, waiting to turn it on as soon as you've passed by. At 4:36, I think he's a bit shy. If it's the same type, in New Zealand, they're known as harvestman spiders and weave a scrappy sort of web up where the roof meets the wall and specially in the corners and if you disturb them in their web, they do a dance and because the are very thin, they are hard to see. Because they have long gangling legs, they are often mistaken for the Daddy-long-legs... a pseudo-arachnid. Great vlog.

In the USA, propane canisters are white. Red seems more appropriate, actually.

I find this extremely interesting, here in Maritime Canada, we don't have a canal system plus with our long and cold winters where the rivers freeze over owning a boat is really a luxury item. Plus the fact that I'm disabled and a Type 2 Diabetic, I tend to subscribe to things like this to kind of live out what I would have liked to do.

Well, given I've always dreamed of living on a houseboat since I was a kid and watched a comedy movie with Jimmy Stewart in it all I've got to do is win the Powerball or Mega Money lotteries then move to England and by one of these awesome floating homes..
Yes, I know how to handle boats given I'm a U. S. Coast Guard Veteran who lived in the Florida Keys for 10 years and actually rented houseboats.
They can be tricky on windy days but that just separates the Captains from the Mates.

I recently commented on one of your videos that "you're my hero!" I should have clarified, maybe hero is a term used far too frequently and inaccurately, after all you're not fighting fires or going off to war here. However, I am quite enamored with your choice of selling up and living full time in a canalboat. So many of us can make excuses as to why we can't do it, but you've put all that aside and put your money where your mouth is, so to speak. For that, I applaud you and, in the meantime, all I can do is watch your vlogs with full respect and a small sense of envy. I've thoroughly enjoyed the weeks I've spent on hire boats on Britain's inland canals and waterways, including last year on the Norfolk Broads, but living it full time is a whole other level of commitment.
So, thank you for posting these videos. I will continue to watch, continue to be a little envious (when things are going well and the weather is nice,) and I'll surely learn a few things along the way. Be safe, have fun, and best of luck to you. ---Cheers from Rich, Connecticut USA

As a recent subscriber, I could not agree more with BloomingOnion. As someone who works in learning and development, I watch the way you are doing your vlogs with interest. You make it look really easy but I'm sure a lot of work goes into your videos and you are very authentic in your approach. No wonder more and more people are watching real people (like yourself) on CZcams rather than heavily coiffed actors or so called personalities. You've followed your dream and hats off to you!

The new tech heating system is gonna be great in the cold times. Coal burning stoves may be traditional but an unneeded tradition.

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  Před 8 lety +6

Oh, I never use the "new tech" central heating. The stove is much nicer to have on and keeps the boat very toasty indeed.
