That paint and plastic sheet are health hazards. Though the pans are covered, still fumes produced by heat from plastic and paint can reach the food. Reasonable temperature can be reached if you don't paint the foils and use a glass face. Better still, use two glass sheets with a gap in between. There are black pans and pots are available in the market which are food safe
    Nice try, keep it up

Appreciable efforts by PP Vinayak. Metal body and costly solar cookers are worth selling them in scrap and hence chances of theft is high. This one have no resale value but very high utility value. I have seen this product.

While the concept and execution of the project is to help people use solar power and is much appreciated, please also be aware of the toxicity of materials you use in construction. Thermocol (Polystyrene) has been known to release toxic gases at high temperatures. Please look at organic insulating alternatives, like coconut fiber or a old natural wool blanket neatly folded into the same shape.

i also felt the same to replace thermocol and transparent plastic sheet with natural options, eventhough it may cost little more, by others. This project is good to show everyone that we can cook food in reality. But all others use insulation materials as told above and instead of transparent plastic sheet, you can use, thin glass. (you should be careful to handle glass)

Where the top opens up as a reflector, would adding side reflectors make it too hot? Maybe it could cook faster or more?

40-some years ago I saw in a book they made a 1 yard (meter) hemisphere of cardboard and lined it with aluminum foil (silver mylar might be better) and mounted it on sticks they shifted around to point at the sun.
The text said that unlike a parabolic reflector the hemisphere would make a hot area instead of a hot point. They claimed the area at center just right for a 9" frying pan and from the reflector in mid-latitude America summer, 360F/182C.
A metal box in the same spot could perhaps bake as fast as an oven. And of course a bigger reflector would get hotter still.

    • @jaglinuxmint
      @jaglinuxmint Před 9 lety

***** thats impressive. wonder why this technology didn't catch up to present times. People want quick fix for everything.
what you said is mind boggling. do you have any plans of building it?

What has happened for a long time is that the available energy from burning things (especially bonded carbon) has overshadowed and out-convenienced so many other ways with some exceptions like hydroelectric generation.
There is the other power of being able to charge people for fuel, the economic and political power that would have everyone pay them that gets in the way.
I saw a TED talk about how smoke from indoor cooking fires with dirty fuel is an even bigger world health problem leading to an amazingly huge number of early deaths, stunted growth and poor health. And THEN there is the lack of clean water for so many, I mean BILLIONS of people written off and neglected.
Solar cooking can save the poor on fuel and need to cut down forests that support life and breathing indoor smoke.
Solar power can be used to purify water.
When you have so little, any more is welcome.
Search CZcams for solar cooker and see what people are doing, even the non-scientific are making it work in the face of rising energy costs. Green energy is becoming necessity rather than curiosity.
If you compress air the heat it has concentrates and temperature rises. If the air was hot before, squeezing to half volume can make it oven-hot. Squeeze more and you have a plunger fire starter. The energy is in the air more than the work of compressing.
Stretch the same air and it cools, btw.
