This is me going through many of the math problems on the pre-apprenticeship math exam study guide. It is a great review of basic math skills for an apprenticeship program. Best way to prepare for a basic math exam for the trades. Print out the exam from the link above, do the problems, see the solutions.

I was in the Army for 23 years. I am tentatively planning on getting into the Iron Worker Industry. This helped me out a ton. By the way, i have not touched Basic Math in 30 plus years. God bless You and God Bless America!
Good to hear
Love how you spent time doing this, thank you!
Great to hear, thank you
Thank you Sir! I could never grasp basic maths in high school and struggled. I’m now re-learning at 30 and your videos are so helpful!
Thank you, great to hear
Same, math was so hard for me back then, still is a little bit now, but not nearly as much after I went to college
Passed my test the other day. So glad I re learned and dusted my brain off with these math problems

This was a ton of help! I wish I had teachers like you growing up. You seem like a very patient and kind man. I will let you know if I pass...lol
Thank you, I'm sure you will, good luck!
I got a 95% thanks for your help! I would have gotten higher, but I didn't finish the last five questions due to time restraints on the math portion....

Good luck
How you do?
Beautiful explanation mate🍻
Glad it helped
I just finished taking the IBEW pre apprenticeship test in Minneapolis Minnesota. They switched to a new test which is the GAN Aptitude Test. There was a lot of fraction problems, mixed numbers, finding pattens in a series of numbers, and my least favorite a whole section on paper folding where holes end up after a piece of paper is folded and holes punched. Thanks for the review on fractions and math skills, the refresher helped a lot.
about how much algebra was on the test? taking the 110 test tomorrow.
@@bril6157 not as much as I thought. No factoring, no slope line intercept, mostly fractions.
Good to hear, thank you for the update
Holy mackerel! I have a lot to relearn. 😂Thanks for your channel!!
Keep studying, it will come back
I'm needing to study because I'm going for IBEW local 22. Thank you for making this video
Thank you
How did you do
Thank you ❤️
Thank you for watching and commenting
Question on the plywood problem at approximately the 24:43 mark; are we to assume that only full sheets can be used, because if you can cover a 24’x32’ area with 24 sheets, you would be left with a 1’x32’ gap, which could be filled with a 25th sheet ripped down to 4x equal 1’x8’ pieces(if we ignore saw kerf) requiring only 25 sheets?
A sheet is 4' x 8'. Both 24 and 32 are divisible by 4 and 8, so you can lay it out either way. Both ways end up with whole sheets.
@@ColfaxMath yes but the area the question ask you to cover is 25’x32’. So in the video, to cover that additional foot you added 4 more sheets and noted to discard the extra 3’x8’ as scrap. I am wondering, on an aptitude test such as this is that the correct way to interpret this problem or is it more correct to think of it in real word applications where I would only take one additional sheet (the 25th) and divide it up into fill the remaining area making the answer 25 not 28?
@@michaelhuebel9231 sorry about that last response, I didn't remember it was 25'. Twenty five sheets makes sense, with three rips, not sure if you can add that sentence on the test.
@@ColfaxMath no worries, I recognize this video is 9 months old. I am studying for the IBEW aptitude test I am scheduled to take Nov 8th; I graduated high school in 2000 and had AP calculus that year so algebra was a while ago. I have found your videos helpful refreshers. I am just trying to figure out if a similar question to this showed up on the 8th how best to interpret the question and determine the solution for the best result on my test.
i got 25 also by getting the area of 25x32 = 800 then dividing the area of 8x4 = 32 ---> 800/32 = 25
Hi. Is this the one I would take before getting into the local 5 yr apprenticeship (IBEW RI)? My test is this Thursday 🎉
You should check in with your local, they are there for you.
thank you for this, where can i find the answers to the practice test so i can check my work?
Thank you
@@ColfaxMath can I find the answers to the practice test anywhere so I can check my work?
thank you very much ,will I take the test online? and can I use the calculator if I go to a place to get the test? thank you again
Not sure, some places it's online
@@ColfaxMath ok cool, can we use the calculator ?
I don't think so
Is there an updated link? Can’t access one in description.
www.kmltf.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/pre_apprentice_math_study_guide_01.pdf
The exam is very similar to the actual entrance exam
Good to know, thank you
Is there anything extra on the test??
I take my local 18 test next week and let me tell you.. you brought my marbles back to life 🤣
Great to hear. good luck
local 18 in los angeles?
How did you do
Would you shade in 15 circles for 15/16 please I’m confused on that one someone please answer me I got a plumbers aptitude test soon please help
Hope he sees this comment
Yes I see this comment
Yes, you would shade 15 of the slices. There are a total of 16 slices and you want 15 of the 16 slices, so you shade in 15 of them. Hope that helps
@@ColfaxMath I’m now seeing this thanks a lot bro I ain’t do this typa math in a couple months lol
@@PIuggo glad to hear it
I can’t get the link to work either, has anybody figured out a new link or how to get it to work? Thanks in advance
I'll work on it
Thank you !
Does the test also vary by state/region, part of me feels like that no matter what, although I can be absolutely wrong lol
Yes, plenty of variation between states and unions. Absolutely you should check in with whoever is giving the exam and what preparation materials they have.
@@ColfaxMath what do you mean? I know when I took it the first time, which I shouldn’t have done, because I just had a brain injury couple months prior . I thought I could do it in the time everyone else had, but I didn’t realize how bad it was, and how much more easily I get frustrated and confused. But I know that you can’t write on the test, you have a sheet of paper they give you to show your work, and no calculator did you mean that? Or like will they tell me what to study for, because right now I’m just doing a group of it all. And half of the stuff I study for last time wasn’t even on there, a lot of it was graphs, which I didn’t study too much and I think that’s where I got messed up.
Could this also apply to plumbing aptitude test ?
Yes, they all all pretty similar
Taking plumbing test this Thursday
Good luck
How did it go? Just applied to the union today what was on ur test
@@sweetmaydaniels5331 I passed. It was pretty easy. I even did the interview. Now I’m waiting what they say back
I don't get it. 32 * 25 is 800 square feet. A piece of plywood is 4 * 8 equals 32 sq ft.. that's 25 pieces of plywood.
Yes
This is nice but I don’t like how you skipped some big problems for example the fiftheen sixteenth shade in, kinda remind me of teachers only doing little problems then giving you tougher ones ya know 🙁 nice review though 💯
OK, I'll try and be more thorough in future videos
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you
I'm takin a basic math test for local 104 vac next week would u say I would need to no more than the basic math?
I'd check in with them and ask for a practice exam
@@ColfaxMath they stated basic 8th grade algebra
@@ColfaxMath I would assume that means the topics u covered as well as multiplying and diving decimals fractions?
it s a pre apprentice math test 45 minutes
Local 525 test tomorrow hope I pass
Good luck 🤞
Did anyone get 33.3333 sq ft for the glass question
