This is one of the best scenes in the series. Second to John Larroquette storming in the Oval with a cricket bat.
The hammer joke is so simple, yet so brilliant. Set it up, give it enough attention that people remember it, but little enough that it seems inconsequential. Put the attention somewhere else for a little while, include some witty banter for good measure. And then, finally, payoff. Just a masterpiece in comedy from a show that rarely advertises itself as such.
Candidate for best line of the series: “I meet so many people who can’t wait to tell me they’re from Chicago and when I meet them, they’re living anywhere but Chicago.” 🤣🤣
The moment with the hammer always gets me laughing.
The way Bartlet says "That matters less to me" always cracks me up 😅
The "I'm easing in" always makes me laugh
I love that Leo doesn't flinch when Babish bashes the recorder with the hammer.
Best (and most hilarious) example of Chekov’s Gun that I’ve ever seen 😂
Who knew Cameron Tucker was a assistant lawyer before becoming Fizbo
As a guy from Chicago, and doesn't reside in Chicago.... Guilty...
"He's got a nicer office than I do."
"Do we have to go now?"
I loved the Oliver Babish character. Wished there could’ve been a lot more with him.
The writing here is so beautiful. You can really imagine Sorkin, wanting to end the scene with the gavel smashing and then writing the whole thing to be able to motivate that punchline. It's a thing of beauty.
This scene -- and especially the bit at the very end, of course -- will always make me laugh. Brilliant writing from Sorkin, and the actors played it beautifully.
This, THIS, is writing! Banter both dry and witty, pacing, amazing character development with crucial exposition and background. An entire episode's worth of writing in just the opener.
I must have watched that scene a dozen times. I still laugh out loud !
Look, the show was always five times funnier than it had any right to be. But this whole opening scene, from start to finish, was just the absolute best. 🤣
"I'm easing in" was my favourite moment!
I am a lawyer and I would do the same thing if there was a recording device running when a client wanted to disclose privileged information
