Delaware's only amusement park now ABANDONED

  • Todays journey takes me to NewCastle, Delaware to see what remains of what used to be the states only amusement park.
    Blue Diamond Park started out in 2002 as a motorcross, ATV action park where they held races and even a monster truck show. 2003 they added 20 rides, a rollercoaster, carnival games, mini golf. but over the years people started to get injured on the rides as a result of them breaking down. this resulted in lawsuits which raised the companys insurance rates drastically, causing the company to not make any money. so they closed the amusement park, auctioned the rides off, sold the rollercoaster to a place in Florida.
    1 year after closing the amusement park they closed the motorcross park and Amazon came in and built a warehouse in its place. today some rides still remain oddly behind the warehouse where the delivery trucks get loaded.

    I went there in like 2004 or 05 (later elementary school) and it was an odd little park. It almost felt like a semi permanent fair because the ride area was basically a big stretch of concrete with rides dropped on it with no real flow beyond the main concourse. It didn’t help that the weather was intermittent spitting rain and low 60 degree temps, but that wasn’t exactly their fault. They had a wild mouse coaster and I think a wild cat, too, and the mini golf was average, if kinda boring and (if I remember correctly) kinda bullshit with some designs. Shame we really don’t have anything to replace it, other than, I guess, Funland in Rehoboth, but that’s definitely a commitment to get down to from upstate. Would love to see someone take an honest swing at a park sometime in the future, hopefully with more of a vision for theme or vibe.

    You might consider investigating Brandywine Springs Amusement Park, which wildly predated Blue Diamond Park. It had rides and concessions and a lot more. You can still visit the site of the old park, but little is left of it. Still, it's a great afternoon to explore.

    • @creatureconnor
      @creatureconnor Před 2 lety +3

      @@journeywithjay heh, more like quick to drawl a gun, LOL! Yeah, I don't explore it often cuz of the high risk. The owner is definitely someone not to be messed with and he's got the whole place fortified to the teeth, but I've never actually been caught. The park is surrounded by a barbed wire fence with 5 different types of barbed wire and a moat, then depending on where you get in, you may have to cross the pond on a narrow crumbling dam that feels like it's gonna collapse at any moment. If you manage to get inside, you'll be constantly looking over your shoulder and afraid to move. The whole place is posted with threatening custom no trespassing signs that I always get a kick out of, cuz you've gotta hand it to the guy, he's funny. The deeper you get into the park, the signs get increasingly more threatening and it's honestly kinda exciting to see what dark creative message of you getting shot is around the next corner, LOL! 😅 And I've never seen the same sign twice. Also, I learned the hard way that when it gets dark, every building is equipped with motion sensing spotlights, that trigger when you walk by! So yeah, it's probably not worth it, but when you live 3 minutes down the road it's quite enticing and you've got nothing but time to plan. If you do ever go in, I recommend staying near the roller coaster on the edge of the park cuz 1, it's the coolest attraction, and 2 it's the least patrolled.

    • @journeywithjay
      @journeywithjay  Před 2 lety +1

Never actually knew there was a theme park aspect all those years funnily enough. 2 kids on our team almost got kicked for messing with fire extinguishers in those blue pavilions. This isn't Deleware's only amusement park. Funland in Rehobeth, DE, is still going strong. They are known for having the world's only suspended pretzel dark ride (I have a video of it, you're welcome to check it out) and a very rare paratrooper with the backwards setting. I've heard inside sources saying they're thinking about getting a coaster within the next couple years.
    On Blue Diamond, (not so) fun fact: the Sand Blaster roller coaster from Florida that had the infamous accident was at Blue Diamond before it was sold to the park it killed someone at down there. Knowing what you said about Blue Diamond's maintainance I do wonder the kind of condition it was in at the time of the sale, and what was done to fix it.
