- I apologize in advance for all the demolishing of art that goes on in this video - please forgive me. But amidst the destruction there's LOTS of tips, laughter, and painting. I also share a new tip for applying gesso to your canvas. Lastly, don't forget to listen to the newest podcast interview (link below to that).

Love how you whittled down the problem to a fine point, then chopped it right off!
You gotta be one of my new fav art youtubers, your entire being just gives off such good energy
Well goodness- thanks so much!
Yeah i agree... its greath
I agree..mine too...
“The owl went bad. Growl”. LOL.
Went real bad 😂
@@sandihester I loved it :(
Absolutely, we can still be friends. I wholeheartedly envy your ability to let go. I AM sad about painting over the black cat cuz he was purrrfect. But I love the pumice idea, and the rabbit is beyond fabulous! I hope one day you venture into cows. 😬
I loved everything about this comment! ❤️
that made me feel good... I loved your sketch books and I am actually inspired because my head just doesn't shut up and I now realise that that is part of the process.
Yes, that’s a BIG part of the process!
Love your paintings.I was like noooooo watching you cover you work! But hey it's your work. You've got to what you've got to do! I loved your rabbit paints. It sweet and I love the colours. I currently working through issue of being too precious with sketchbooks. Currently I am working in a book I altered and have made into my art Journal. I am getting so much inspiration from your videos. Keep being you x
Thank you- I’m so glad you’re finding some inspiration here!
Sandi, I'd so appreciate your considering doing a video or two about your own personal style. I'd love to see a couple of tutorials on your hairstyles and the products that you use to create your hairstyles...shampoo, conditioner, hair ornaments.
I'd also love a peek into your wardrobe choices and jewelry combinations.
I would also love to see any of your home that you care to share! The color choices
and your decor is of great interest as I muse on "The Life of an Artist"!!!
Thank you for your consideration!!!
I wanted to say the owl looked cool, though it seemed to look a little mad...can see why it scared you!! Again another great video with lots of inspiration! This video made me giggle and smile, just what I needed at the moment! ❤
Okay, I loved this video, I adore ALL of your videos, but you BROKE MY HEART with this one because I fell in love with that little owl as soon as I saw him. I do sometimes wince when you paint over things though I understand but man oh man you just show no mercy! Ha ha ha! But that little owl! I was shouting "NO SANDI, DON'T, DON'T DO IT, DON'T DOOOOOOOOOO IT!!!" but you did and I could have cried. I vote for more owls. And you do such cool trees what about a night scene with owls everywhere in the trees, maybe some with just their eyes glowing. You're so welcome. I just know you really appreciated my feedback! Ha ha ha! But, oh, that little owl.....
You’re comment cracked me up!!! 😂😂 I’m sorry about the owl 😞. He was evil though so he needed to go! 😂
@@sandihester I'll never believe he was evil , you'll never convince me , but, well, does this mean we will never see a forest full of owls at night? (Maitri, still holding out hope!) 🦉🦉🦉
Okay...I just had to stop this (at 4 mins and 3 sec) to tell you that, no matter what you do, it's okay because they are you creations and you are the artists. And to say thank you, because I have been giggling g through the whole thing, and I am still at the beginning! Thank you! You and Hank and the bloodthirsty owl are all awesome! Johnny too 😸. Okay I will go back and watch the rest.
🤗🤗🤗 so glad it’s giving you laughs!!! Win!
I just painted a base layer with tempera paint, big mistake. When I realized it I covered it with acrylic paint. Then I drew my under-sketch onto the canvas in water soluble pencil. I do this all the time, because If I don't like the sketch I can use a little water on a brush and remove it, let it dry and then sketch again. It works amazing, but because of the tempera layer the brush and water were removing pencil, acrylic and tempera paint, basically all the way down to the original canvas. So I stopped and gessoed my canvas with clear gesso that I made at home from PVC glue and cornstarch. It worked great. My point: if you have a painting you love, but need a rougher surface you could put clear gesso on it. Or make your own with PVC and your pumice or cornstarch. This is just an option for people who love the painting, but the surface needs more tooth. Side note: I'm not sure about the archival properties of home made gesso. :)
Freedom and looseness in painting. Love it! Freedom in painting over another painting. Love it! The rabbit. Aww, 🥰 love it!
Thank you Tami!
Woot woot, all caught up! I'm totally imagining Grady going to the refrigerator for a snack, and eating your precious subject matter!
Wow - thanks for watching all of them!!
Sandi ,every time Hank rocks up there's trouble afoot 🤣🤣 still friends ,although I did a big gulp when Johnny the cat got covered up🤣 BUT I loved watching this whole process .It's so funny how we all have our "precious " and like you I find it difficult to feel as free with canvas .I found painting on the floor rather than an easel more free and it did help ! Thank you for a fabulous video and sharing you're time .love from Scotland ❤️
Good point - let’s blame all of this on Hank!!! Such a scoundrel he is!
@@sandihester ha,ha,ha....Hank....what a perfect name!!
Mad? Not one bit. I love watching your process and the Rabbit!! Oh my gosh, I adore it. Thank you for sharing your heart during your videos. Your joy just shines.
Awe, thanks so much Marci and I’m so glad you liked the rabbit!
I'm so glad I just stumbled across your channel, you and your artwork are awesome! Its also really cool to see you just paint over stuff you don't like, that is something I really struggle with and its just a relief to see proper artists go through a whole process of trial and error. Looking forward to binge watching your videos 😁
Welcome Lon!! So glad to have you here!! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the videos. I hope you find them inspiring!
That rabbit is very good. It seems to want to leap out of the canvas. The other paintings were sweet but they have to work for you first. It's only painting and not a heart surgery, after all. Have a nice weekend, Sandi.
Thank you- so glad you liked the rabbit!
Surprise Surprise, I LOVE the rabbit! Going to pour myself a glass of wine and rewatch this video because I can’t get enough of hunky Hank. Also, “the owl went bad” is a great saying with multiple uses. I can see I’m going to have to work it into some casual conversations.
The owl went bad comment cracked me up! So glad you liked the video and thank you for watching TWICE!
@@sandihester HAH! I think I’ve watched your vlog n.39 at least 6 times and will prob watch at least another 6 :)

Thank you for taking us through the still life process. It was helpful to see. Your still life paintings are really, really good (even the ones you painted over : ) I wonder if the sketch book vs canvas issue is to do with orientation i.e. the sketch book is generally used flat on the table where as your canvas is used vertically. Not sure if this impacts the outcome. No I’m not mad at you for painting over your work because it’s part of the process. Your honesty and sense of humour made it enjoyable to watch. And what a great rabbit you painted at the end. Thank you for another enjoyable and helpful vlog 🖌🖍✏️
Thank you Catherine! I actually usually put my sketchbook up on my easel and paint on it in the same way o do a canvas. I think I mainly do that because there’s no place cleared off enough 😂 for it to lay flat 🙃
@@sandihester Thank you Sandi for your reply : ) It’s like a process of elimination, solving the sketch book vs canvas situation. With age I’ve learned that when there’s no solution to a problem, then we either accept it for what it is or we get rid of the problem. Although, I can’t see you getting rid of either the sketch book or canvas (and we wouldn’t want you to). Maybe accepting the outcome that your work will vary when painting from the sketch book to the canvas : ) Acceptance (if it’s not negatively impacting a person or others) takes a weight off one’s shoulders. Look forward to you next vlog 🙂
Don’t worry, we’re still friends…😆. Go for it ! You’re in charge. Love the rabbit (and the evil owl! ) 👹
Evil owl 😂
Still Friends!!! I love the rabbit. It is so beautiful. I feel bad that the cat Johnny had to leave. That cat turned out perfect. You had me smiling and laughing and sometimes saying oh no through the video. This video was very entertaining. Can't wait for next Friday for another video. 🙂
Thank you Madeline! I was sad to see the cat go to especially as I watch the video back but it did happen so maybe another good one will come about sometime
this segment So made me smile and lighten up a few ugly stages blocking the flow. Yr truly my main binge including reruns. Ty!!
You are really brave. You show you paintings with a lot of exciment. Congrats!
Thank you!
just fearless....I talked about you on my channel yesterday in my October happy recap Sandi, like I said you were such an 'event' to discover. I just adore you your art and your channel xx
Awe - THANK YOU!!!! Can’t wait to check it out!
This summer, your videos accompanied me. The video is very energetic and inspiring. I kind of captured some lessons. The arrangement for the still life is a good idea. It's a lot of work to paint it over and over again. I enjoyed your videos so much!
I’m so glad you are enjoying the videos!!! Thank you!
I love your boats! Every time I see them pop up in the background or a sketchbook flip thru I just smile so big!
So glad you like them!!!!
LOVED hearing you on the ArtWank podcast! Hope the collaborative art works out for you three!
Sometimes sketchbooks just feel ‘safer’ somehow. You can close them up and hide them away, but you can’t really do that with canvas. Thank you for sharing the process, the frustrations, and the vulnerabilities. You keep it real!
Ohhh, thank you for listening to it and I’m so glad you liked it!!!!!!!
when i was 12 we had a pear tree in the yard it was wonderful having fruit tress
Im just so inspired by how many times you can rework the same canvas. It feels limitless! :)
I am just having some quiet giggles when watching your video's. Thank you for sharing your days so full of joy with us!
So glad! Win!
Actually Sandi is the goddess of joy 😋
The scary owl 😂
I think he got rabies 😂
I lovvvvveeeee your videos so so so much. I watch them over and over again cause it inspires me to create. You have such an amazing energy that lifts my mood no matter how my day has been. thank you so much for sharing 💕❤💕
Ohhh I’m so glad you’re enjoying them 🤗. Thanks so much for watching and for sharing ❤️
I LOVE LOVE LOVE your big rabbit painting!!!❤❤❤ AWESOME!
Thank you!
Hey, Friend! Sometimes you have to tear things apart to make something better. Thanks for bringing us along on your painting adventure. This is bits of an artist's life and we get to peek inside and see all the things 😀 Have a great weekend and see you next week.
Love the rabbit. Funny you should say that looking through the viewfinder you could see where the composition was wrong, I sometimes find that looking at a photo of a painting helps to see where things are going are right and wrong.
Yes, I do that too! So many tricks like that to help!
Hahaha 😂 sketchbook beige! 😂 Still watching just had to laugh!
I love that rabbit so much!!! I so wish I could buy him. I wish you sold prints of your work!
Still besties for sure! I like to use absorbant ground on canvas to help the acrylics work more like watercolor. I will try the pumice gesso .
🤗so glad to know that we can still be friends! 😂
How can anyone be mad at you.
Thank you George!
We use pumice stones to clean hard water out of toilets, tubs, sinks... It's awesome! I suppose you could put some pumice powder on a rag and use it to clean as well. I will note the newer pumice stones are not as durable as the old one were. I've been using it for 20+ years to clean and where the older pumice stones would clean a couple toilets and sinks, the new ones crumble to dust as you clean one toilet. Boo! However, pumice - still awesome.
I absolutely love the rabbit! So beautiful with that gorgeous blue background!
Thanks so much Jane!
I always love seeing your process!
Thank you Karen!
That bit with the owl was so funny! Thank you for another inspiring video! 😊💜

That rabbit 🐇 is beauteous! I love all of your processing, painting over stuff etc, it’s very endearing and relatable. Sending love from England ☀️
Thank you Charity!! All the way from England wow!
Thanks, Sandi for sharing all this! I love watching you go through your process and verbalizing as you go. I'm always so inspired by your journey and seeing each step you take. Also, I'm looking forward to your new podcast.
Oh, thank you Emmie! Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy the podcast!
Still friends! sigh.... sorry for the loss of the black cat - that is my nemesis - every 200th try i get something ... but paint or photo its usually a black blob with whiskers ... love the rabbit, i liked the raccoon too (in your sketch book) - Made me laugh that the video is you struggling with still life - again - still life - again - still life - again and then whoosh its a rabbit. i wrote it on the cover of my sketchbook - WHOOSH, it's a rabbit. Thank you! give Cooper a pat - he's a star!
Whoosh it's a rabbit! I chuckled..
Again!
This comment cracked me up! For some reason I can paint still live in my sketchbooks but not on a canvas for some reason!
I have wondered what you use pumice for, now I know. I love the rabbit 🐰. Great job!!
Thank you
The actual surface being right ink right makes all the difference in the world! I started out doing decorative painting on took painting on wood years ago. We prepped this wood with a lot of layers of sanding, layers of gesso and other things that made the surface just right. I started in oil's, and then went to acrylics. For the last 20 years or so I've used watercolors. The big difference is the surface has to be appropriate! I don't like painting watercolors on cheap paper because it does not work well. I've recently tried acrylics on canvas and did not like it, but I did not gesso it again. I think that was my problem. The surface makes all the difference! I congratulate you you on being brave enough to know when to try something else!
Surface does make a BIG difference!
Super fun video. I can definitely relate to having days where you feel like nothing is going right and you just need a reset. As always, I love the rabbit
Thank you!
Sandi, I know you said the owl in the painting went terribly wrong in the beginning, but I think it’s super cute 😂like grumpy cat, but grumpy owl lol I would love a tee shirt with him all on it or as a pack of stickers lol
Oh after keep looking in video , I really like that composition with the table.
Loved seeing your process. Those snapdragons are lovely. Glad you found a finish you liked on the canvas.
Thank you!!
Loved the owl and the peacock
Thank you!
You might try painting your canvas flat on the table for a change the same way you paint in your sketchbooks. The experimental feeling you get with your sketchbooks might come to you as you paint your canvas in a place other than the easel.
Good tip Sally but I actually put my sketchbooks up on the easel usually- mainly because there’s rarely a cleared off flat space in my studio 😂
@@sandihester My second tip is to lean the canvas up against Cooper for inspiration if the snoring isn’t too much of a distraction.
The rabbit is brilliant. I love to watch your process. It’s a lot like my own. I might have a little mad scientist too. You’re awesome. Your videos are so interesting and packed with ideas i hadn’t thought of. There is something so cozy about your videos. Carry on!!
Thank you ❤️- really appreciate that!
I love the rabbit!!!!
🤗 thank you!
Interesting, I too have this thing about paper v canvas. Maybe fear factor, preciousness thing. I have the same with expensive v cheap paper too! I watched you go through your dilemmas and thought the painting was fixed as soon as you blocked in the background, if you remove it the rest of the painting is lively and free. Do backgrounds act as anchors to freedom? Anyway thought I would share that thought. The pumice is interesting I would do a lot to get away from the texture of canvas but absolutely love the responsiveness of fabric, the little bounce under the brush. Just love that you wound up with a rabbit! Hope you can bring back the cat at some time. He was cool. But nothing ventured nothing gained! Glad to have found you, after a lifetime of drawing I just want to paint, I haven’t got time for painstaking detail, the impression is far more beguiling than anything else my mind fills up the rest anyway. Thanks for always reminding me of that.
Thank you Lindy!!! I’m glad you’re enjoying the channel!
Loved the latest podcast and look forward to seeing results of your collaborations!! (And the latest Rabbit painting is fabulous -- I wouldn't have thought of doing it but now I'm wanting to try something similar. I want to "paint it forward" using your inspiration!!!)
Thank you- so glad you liked the podcast 🤗
Sandi, I love the rabbit! As for the painting you had trouble with not liking-for me, something about the placement of the bananas threw me. It was like my eyes had trouble moving around the painting. Most likely that’s just me and my weirdness. I think I will give the pumice a try
Thank you Diane! Let me know what you think about the pumice
I love how you show us everything... the good, the bad, and the ugly! Love watching and listening to your process, and how you solve problems. The pumice sounds interesting. I’ve added sand to acrylic paint before, from a class taught by another artist. Loved the wonky texture it gave the canvas.
My Maud Lewis book arrives today, and I can’t wait to dive into it!
So glad you enjoy it and how fun that your book is coming today 🤗!!
Love the bunny!
Thanks Hollie!
I love your videos You are always so fun and inspiring
Awe - thank you so much ❤️
Love the bunny! I like seeing how your canvas evolves. I never repainted over a canvas, it just sits in the corner mocking me. Next time I get into a mad toss, I will gesso it over and have something new but not really. Another watcher for the snarling owl! :)
The owl definitely turned evil - he had to go!
The goddess of Pumice ended up with a Rabbit loved this Sandi 🥰
Thank you Deborah!
Clear gesso also has a grit to it. Mixing pumice in gesso is probably cheaper.
You have the most beautiful studio set up
Thank you Deborah!!! I really love it !
You are just the best
Awe - thanks Mary!
Such a great video! Love your process and how you take us all with you on your artistic journey! The rabbit is awesome and I will definitely be trying out the pumice on panels but would love to know where you get polyester canvas from ( did I miss that?)
Thanks for all your sharing!!
ps - I live for when your dog makes an appearance! ❤️🐶
Thank you Lynda! I have a link in the description that has the canvas I use so you can check that out.
Oh my gosh, this/you cracked me up...when you think out loud it reminds me of me trying to figure things out, oh btw...eyeballing things is the ONLY way to go and I had to laugh at Cooper coming in and checking things out and how the still life died at the end....oh my gosh....cracking up over here!!! Oh, and your question about what pumice is...it's pumice...cooled down lava stuff that's been ground into a powder ha,ha...
Oh yeah, I had a heart attack when you painted over Grady's favorite cat...but yep, we're still friends...
One more thing....LOVE THE RABBIT!!!
I’m kind of sad I painted over the cat too!
So glad you’re enjoying it all Christine 🤗🤗🤗🥰
Love you 😍
Omg that bunny at the start is adorable
I love the rabbit.
Thank you!
You sign really makes me laugh. I do the same thing. Artist quirk!
I will say I’m a little sad about Hank but hey, your rabbit is “hopping!!” Lol. And there’s always another painting….and another…to look forward to. RIP hairy Hank!!
⛴⚓️🌊💐 (hank’s burial at sea)
This cracked me up!
**running to try out pumice** (p.s. you are forgiven for all the art demolition, lol.
😂 Katie! What are you doing over here? What an honor!!!!! ❤️
Yay, love the rabbit! Can’t wait to see how the painting formerly known as Tiger Frank will turn out. Loved the idea and the animals in it though, even if they are sneakily peeking out from the background- very cool🤫
Ok, this may have to be the new title for that painting - Tiger Hank 😂
@@sandihester hehehheheeheheee ;)
I like some of background showing thru it's like another dimension peaking thru
I want ur confidence 💪🏽 awesome 😎 xo
Enjoyed the video. I’m thinking about purchasing some pumice because I’m not crazy about the canvas surface either until I get a nice layer of paint on. I also love to paint on paper. I used to enjoy painting with casein on paper. Casein is a very flat medium you may like. You cannot use it on canvas. Anyway the point of this message is 🥴🥴🥴 . Have you ever done a video demonstrating painting on a pumice primed canvas or would you consider doing one? Thanks for all your sharing. 😊❤️ 2-25-2022
I think I’ve just shared my formula and the lots of the canvases you see me painting on are primed with it
Im amazed about all the paper and canvas you have around. Do you sell them? how do you not run out of space. What do you do with your big paper paintings? Thanks for sharing!
I do sell them! I have some on my website but a lot doesn’t get posted so if you ever see anything you like just email me or message me on Instagram. All the paper paintings I just stack up
I love your creature at 4:15 in your book (thursday may 27) it looks like a lemur. The big eyes draw me in.
I’m pretty sure that’s what it was - I just didn’t know how to spell it 😂
I will stay with the abstract and do all as an abstract painting. Will be nicer. Good luck.
When you work in your sketchbooks, do you paint them while they are vertical or horizontal ... hanging on the wall or laying on your desk/table? I'm wondering if that is what is making you feel different about them? I love that you share all of this with us and that you are so honest. Thank you for sharing your process. =)
I usually put them up on my easel
Hi Sandi! I just love your paintings and your videos! Just wondering if when you paint in your sketchbooks they are flat on the table? When you paint on your canvas on the easel it's a different arm position, and may be why you tense up? I know for myself sometimes I paint better on the flat than on the easel. ❤️
I actually usually put my sketchbook up on my easel - there’s rarely a cleared off flat space in my studio 😬
I would have made a scenic background and made an Owl and Pussycat in a boat picture.
Love Johnny don’t take hi out.
I'm surprised that how many art supplies you have😯😂 like seriously 😅 i want them all in my studio too🥳
I know - it’s too many!
if a painting isnt working, nothing wrong at all with covering it over and starting again, especially with big canvasses, those things are sometimes not cheap
I've used pumice mixed with gesso on panels and used coloured pencils on it but never paint oddly enough
Ohhhh, I bet that would be nice with colored pencils
it is, just eats up your pencils fast lol
You lost the cat. Can’t believe it ♥️♥️♥️
I know. It kind of makes me sad
Sadie...you are so wonderful!! Love your gentle demeanor....ignore the haters your work is very cool
Regarding gesso and pumice and texture... have you ever tried clear gesso? If you ever wanted to keep a painting going instead of starting over I wonder if applying a few layers of clear gesso would give you the "feel" you are looking for without losing the entire piece to white gesso. I have used clear gesso to help me complete a piece I did not want to lose. I would love to hear your thoughts on clear gesso.
I have used clear gesso but not for a while. Thank you for the suggestion!
Are you still loving the duluth overalls? I’ve thought about buying a set to paint in. I’ve always loved the railroad stripe overalls
I am!
Besides the preciousness of the canvas … could it be that you paint horizontally on a a table vs canvas on the easel… that makes it a different process
No, I often put my sketchbook up on my easel
