@CentristRevolution - Yes, Rousseau was a complex character. He's so easy to dislike because of his hypocrisy: He was a moralist, but never married his woman; he wrote a book on raising a child, but sent his 5 children to the orphanage at birth; he failed to climb the social ladder, so condemned the rich and titled in all his works; he saw himself as a good man, but quarreled with and ill-treated every one of his friends. For this, people more often attack him than engage with his ideas.
Even though there are essential aspects in Rousseau's thoughts, and ideas that I agree with, there are some of them that I do not fully like or agree with. I do however find myself more attracted to the ideas of Voltaire and John Locke. With a little bit of Rousseau's ideas, the combination of their philosophies would be outstanding.
I've seen that a few people are comparing Hobbes' Leviathan and Rousseau. I don't see much difference. Rousseau said that gov should use its coercive power to force people to do good.
But when Socrates in effect taught Meno's slave-boy the Pythagorean Theorem, did he teach him by example to hate learning, Rousseau ? No, instead, he taught him patience in learning, humility in answering, and slow yet steadfast determination in discovering the truth !
It wouldn't have been cool in the time of Rousseau - he was universally banned by the church and was under threat of execution at several times in his life.
it depends on how you interpret his social contract, i can pick holes in it left right and centre, and no i dont agree with it. yes it is pure democracy, but a pure system of laws never works, and i would have to spend a long time looking at other peoples interpretations until i can uderstant where rosseau lovers are coming from
Lastly, he decries philosophers while he himself found fame and fortune as a philosopher. My girlfriend told me he liked to get spanked. So he goes on and on about virtue... while he's getting his ass spanked. Class is on Monday. Any comments before then would be appreciated.
He beforehand made money beibg an instructor and travelling. You know $hit. He was a genious who had enough of unoriginal ideas and attituedes around him. Why have yoy got to discredit HIS experience on his latter occupation- every philosopher was deemed not wanted by his peers - starting with socrates

Does your family have any artifacts or manuscripts from the philosopher's time?
