I've always wanted to see analysis of Pokemon characters' designs. This was great, please do more!
Honestly when it comes to designing ninjas stealthily, it would probably come to making them black, grey, or some other muted color (I.e. noob saibot, smoke, ibuki) or try to differentiate them from each other with more color (I.e. scorpion, natuto). They all would kind of generic with only small details to make them different in terms of design. Realistically though, you are right, it’s definitely not stealthy
It truly is a double edged sword. Do you keep your ninja characters accurate, yet all very similar looking, or do you make them distinct and no longer accurate?
It's a tough balancing act. I can't really think of any thing that keeps the ninjas properly stealthy while also making them unique from each other?
So TL;DR, Pokemon Let’s Go! did great in redesigning Kanto and I personally agree highly.
Lance just wants to be a vampire I mean look at his gold and silver sprite the man literally looks like Dracula. Also I think Pokémon masters and you have convinced me lance is indeed a himbo "What's that you say? Gyarados isn't a dragon type Pokémon? Haha not all dragons are dragon type pokemon!" him saying that in masters is so funny to me

I always love your views on character designs. I'm very simple minded so I never really think about it, but then you'll point something out and my brain goes " huh" or " oh ya" or " now that you mention it". You've not learned to control the weather yet? Best get to level grinding.
Favorite Gym Leader Design: Fantina. Gorgeous dress, color, and unique typing pick.
Favorite Elite Four Design: Agatha. I might be influenced a bit by the “Pokemon Generations” series, but that walking cane is just……so cleverly done.
Favorite Champion Design: Me, in Alola. Lol, just kidding. It’s Cynthia. Of course it’s Cynthia.
Do you think Giovanni would have ranked higher if he was a normal type gym leader instead? when you were mentioning that he doesn't express ground typing through his design I noticed he looks more like a normal type leader. Even as a final leader it could still be a tough fight since he has his iconic Persian as well as the kangaskhan he used throughout the game, plus normal has very strong other pokemon like tauros and snorlax
That could definitely have helped. He's certainly more fashionable than Brock's "just a shirt" look. Honestly if Giovanni was a dark type gym leader, he for sure would've been higher. But, of course that type didn't exist in Kanto originally.
Maybe just making the suit brown could have fixed it?

It was actually discovered recently that, in the Beta versions of Red & Blue, Giovanni was originally going to be a Flying-type Gym Leader. His team would've been a Farfetch'd, Fearow, Dodrio, Pidgeot, and Aerodactyl. This also explains pretty well why his Gym badge looks like a feather.
@@scavengerace Interesting theory, but I'm curious as to what your source is? I've never heard of this before, and there's nothing suggesting it on Bulbapedia either. His badge (the Earth Badge) is also shaped like a leaf of a Sakaki tree, of which he's named after in Japan.
23:23 Yes! Unova is my personal favorite region and I love the pokemon from there so much. Elsa's design and character is definitely one of my favorites, even though her volt switching Emolgas always demolish me when I fight her.
I always loved sabrina's HHSS look because both in the manga and in the games its said that she became a more social person over the 3 years. This eventually lead her to being a model(i think) for a time and in BW we learn that she now has a actress career. Its like watching her go from that antisocial emo phase as a teenager to a young adult that goes out, talks to people starts to find out what she wants to a grown woman thats found her passion.
Its rare that any pokemon character goes through much progression as a character in the games
It is really cool to get to see her develop over the years!

Damn straight! There's one thing I dont think you mentioned with Blaine and it's how his character art tries show him as having a fiery personality, and his Hgss look shows that in spades

Huh, I never thought I would get to see a character design analysis of Pokemon region's Gym Leaders and the Elite Four. This was really good! I think it'd be pretty cool if you go down the list of regions and rank those ones too (and kind of turn this into a series), but that's for you to decide if you want to or not

I’m a huge Pokémon nerd and if I remember it’s confirmed that Agatha was fighting professors Oaks Nidorino in the opening. She was also Oaks rival. But then again this isn’t told in the main games or through her design.
Giovanni in go looks like if someone smooshed Pre-Fall of Beacon James Ironwood's face and replaced his Atlas outfit with something in the Team Rocket Style.

As a Pokemon Adventures fan, it’s my obligatory/not so obligatory desire to push the manga in terms of character design. Now they do use the same character designs and don’t stray too far from original artwork(apart from Surge that one chapter where he was given military gear) who actually , but it’s the characterization that does help some characters relate to their designs more like how Blaine as a scientist is played up more in his backstory and Giovanni’s suit blends itself to how Moldable he is as a character as not the one dimensional crime boss.
For sure, the manga versions are basically completely unique characters from the games, which is pretty cool!
The character design for the protagonist is where the manga really shines imo. Normally pretty subtle but sapphires fangs, gold's extra gear, pretty much everyone's facial expressions, etc all normally look good and fit in with their newly injected character traits they get to have for the first time.
Now I want to see what you think of the Unova gym leaders because I absolutely loved Pokémon Black when I was younger.

Though since you've mentioned that you know of the Adventure's existence, part of me is wondering if you plan on talking about how the protags get characterized and your thoughts on them.
No current plans to discuss Adventure's protagonists. I unfortunately don't have much of the manga, so I'm not particularly qualified to make a vid about them. Perhaps some day though!
This video is definitely a new favorite of mine, I loved seeing you go through each design and pick them apart (also helps that one of my favorite gym leaders was number one, but that's neither here nor there). I hope you do even more videos in this manner- seeing you gush about character design has always been one of my favorite aspects about your channel, and this video was no different.
Also, I know her side ponytail is iconic, but I wonder- if Misty didn't have it and just had short hair, do you think she would look more like her title "The Tomboyish Mermaid" more?
The short-hair look is definitely the "tomboy" design that's popular these days. I think the ponytail works because of when the original games came out. That side ponytail was much more in line with the "sporty anime girl" of the 90's.
Honestly I think it's the shorts in the Let's Go version that helps her feel more "Tomboy". Ready for the water but not in an overtly feminine swimsuit.

Misty's side pony tail thing also kinda makes her hair look like a Fish, if the pony tail was the back fin. I have no idea if thats the point but I thought of this just now
You know, as a standalone design Sabrina's FRLG version does convey a little about her personality with a second glance. She's stoic and emotionless, which goes well with the fact that she isn't good at normal interactions with people and that nothing surprises her because she can see the future. Of course, this stuff only really comes through when you know more about her.
However, the huge contrast with her HGSS design adds a LOT of character to her I feel. Never played HGSS so I don't know if it goes into it much, but the much casual design really gives the impression that she's gotten much better at expressing herself compared to her OG design. Like she's gone from 'I know when you are going to die' to 'I hope this outfit makes me look approachable despite knowing the dark truths of reality'. The HGSS design on it's own doesn't do much to convey her personality, but the sharp difference in her designs does.
I loved this! I haven’t seen anyone analyse these designs before so it was such a joy to watch. I’m super excited for the possibility of you doing other generations too, there are a lot of really neat ones to look at. And some fashion CRIMES to shun forever. It’ll be great!

Hmm, a bit difficult for me. If we're just talking about asthetically pleasing and conveys typing then I agree with you and have Erica as my favorite, but in terms of personal favorite I gotta give it to Blue in the end. His cocky design just makes me want to kick his ass, and I add some points for when a design invokes an aimed for emotion well.
I love when you analyze and critic designs hopefully you can do the others regions leaders and elite four.
I especially love how Janine's scarf is meant to look like a Pecha Berry, adding another layer to her poison motif
Id LOVE to see you do the rest of the generations gym leaders! I love pokemon and as a colourblind person with an art degree I just love hearing someone gush about something I can't always experience myself. Thankyou for helping me love my childhood memories a little bit more ❤
Misty's frlg design is supposed to be a school swimsuit and her hgss design is more of a regional/olympic swim team look.
Ninja historically used poison and bombs so Koga's darker appearance with tinges of purple and Janine's more flashy anime aesthetic really fit.
Oh boy I can’t wait to see how Unova gets ranked if this goes on to become a series.
Watching the Anime is really good gives you more information about all the gym leader personality and story you wouldn't think of

If memory serves, there was a rumor that Erica was originally planed to be the Gym Leader of Lavender Town. Instead of Grass, she was going to be a Ghost-type trainer, and her signature kimono was mean to imulate the ones worn by Shrine Maidens.
Really enjoyed that. Would love to see more on the other gym leaders or maybe other groups like the protagonists or something.

Great video ! 100% agree on the number 1 spot and also Blaine's HGSS design because it's just so good. Personally I think I'd raise Sabrina over Lance and Misty over Agatha but otherwise I think you actually have pretty much the same list that I'd make.

You mentioned some of the other media depictions for characters like Brock and Lorelei but didn't go into too much detail. Did a design in the manga or anime being better or worse than the in-game counterpart weigh them down?
Good question! No, I didn't consider any designs outside of the Fire Red/ Leaf Green looks for their ranking. For example, while I feel Brock's original anime look is more iconic and has a more interesting silhouette, that didn't effect where he went on the list.

I think what makes Lorelei's design work is that 4 island is tropical in nature. Its a cute contrast though a small accesory shaped like ice would have elevated her design

I'm looking forward to more of this series! Particularly Flannery, and the Unova leaders. Unova in particular you have to factor in that all the gym leaders have day jobs unrelated to Pokemon battling.
For this region especially, I think it’s important to acknowledge the hardware these games were on, specifically the display technology used. The original Game Boy was monochrome, so you really needed the reference art to get an idea of the colors. The original GBA had a non-backlit screen, so games had to be calibrated for that. The Switch, of course, has a much more modern screen. That’s part of the reason the art is different, at least in-game.

Yes, please do another design ranking of Gym Leaders of other generations, I really like your analysis on this! Also, maybe you could do design analysis on villainous teams/organizations and their leaders, Champions, and other characters that are not Gym Leaders/Elite 4. For example like Zinnia, N, AZ, the rivals, etc. I'd like to hear your thoughts on them.
Erika is my favorite Gym Leader, so very happy to see her on the top, I always think that some people underrated her and grass types, her Gym back in the first games Red/Blue/Green/Yellow, was a headache because of the Stun Spore/Sleep Powder/Poison Powder and if it was a Bellsprout/Weepinbell/Victreebell with Wrap, the Gym could be a total nightmare, sadly that mechanic was downgraded.
Lt. Surge is also my favorite, as he looks as the more agressive (in contrast to Erika), so seeing him almost at the bottom is a surprise for me, however I got it and I agree why he is there.
Lt. Surge is likely loosely based on Guile from Street Fighter, so that influenced his design a fair bit.
22:51 I actually really like this list the only reason I kinda disagree with some of the choices is because I value if they present there typing well enough , and if they look good over character . For example Lorelei( ice type gym leader) is worse to me than Bruno(fighting type) , while I can say Lorelei looks slightly better I don’t associate purple or black with ice. While Bruno is over exaggerated you instantly think fighting type gym leader who is a martial artist🥋 . I can’t do that with Lorelei as I think tropical or fire type gym leader who is a teacher 🧑🏫 /librarian?That’s personally just me though as I can see how characteristics/character is still important. Overall I can still see your point with your list and understand your rankings very easily. I personally would put Janine over Erika is because Janine looks poisonous ninja . While Erika ,in my opinion , looks more yellow than green . However I do agree that if your trying to be stealthy like a ninja 🥷 a big scarf 🧣 does not help. 23:09 I actually agree as I prefer the Let’s Go and Pokémon Masters EX designs more as I believe what type they represent more obviously and just straight up look better even the villainous looking Lance.

I think Giovanni gets a pass for not evoking ground type. His position as a gym leader is meant to be a *twist*. If he was tossing out "ground type" with his appearance, a first time player would wonder why the leader of this evil team has a type theme happening. Especially since the only named characters who do that before the twist are gym leaders. Even his name, when usually the names of characters are corrupted to make the pun obvious, is Giovanni, when it should be the much punnier Geovanni.
Now that it's been 20 years and everyone knows the twist, could they redesign him and give him some ground elements? Probably. But it would have to be a very fine balancing act with his mafioso aesthetic.

Okay, I made this comment before actually watching the video. Afterwards, I have to clarify that I just wrote it like this because Erika is my personal favourite out of all Kanto gym leaders with Sabrina being 2nd. Perhaps this is also biased because Erika and Sabrina are the best at showing the player what their respective type can do, both have amazing and strong teams in-game and beautiful designs to compliment their type.
Bruno should really feel bad. :D He's such a pushover in-game and just has this feral buff guy look to him. This could have been really interesting, but he just sits there doing nothing.
Giovanni gives off more of a Steel type trainer if anything
It's weird to say, but I think the orange suit of anime-Giovanni captures the Ground type more than the all-black.

Agatha is just old person? Not much characterization? I get that this is more based on design and lore. However she is arguably the most vocal if the elite four of which she is about. She was a old friend and rival to Prof. Oak back he was still into battling Pokemon. Days she clearly misses when states how she loathes how he decided to quit fighting and started researching Pokemon to later make the Pokedex and become a professor. She became so bitter that it soured her view on Pokemon outside of battle. This and the games also hint her having a one sided crush on him back then, so she saw the change in goals as a betrayal to both her and her worldview.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who loves Elisa.

I actually prefer Misty's design in HGSS the most as I never liked her little side ponytail.
I grew up with both Misty and May as companions because my access to certain episodes and movies 1-9 before DP came on tv. I never liked her hair style considering it just lesser than Mays, Dawn's and the rest of the girls
