Koryo Saram │Identity, Language, and Culture

- Koryo Saram refers to the ethnic Koreans who migrated to the Russian Far East and Central Asia, particularly Kazakhstan, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The migration was mainly a result of economic opportunities and political instability in the Korean Peninsula during that period. But beyond the political and historical existence, there are people. Daniil and Yona are two of these people both trying to find their way in modern Korean society. Their identities, language skills, and feelings towards their homeland are very different, yet they relate to each other. With the help of Yunseo, we explored what it means to be a Koryo Saram and discovered much along the way.

Here in Busan, we have quite a few Koryo citizens related to the shipping industry and I enjoy meeting them with my Uzbek friend. Their relatives living in Central Asia have apparently preserved Korean traditions better than in Korea itself. I loved listening to these guests and just noticing small differences like their posture and cadence compared to the Natives.
The cadence I can definitely pick up on. It's marvelous. The posture was never something I considered actually. Would actually be very interested to hear more about this. We spoke before the recording started about whether they can spot other 고려사람 from a distance. For example, Daniil and Yona are both in my same class but didn't know each other previously. However, they were able to tell that they were part of the same community.

Local media depicting them more would be interesting.
To my knowledge there's only one full-on movie set among the Koryo Saram called 'Wedding Campaign'. Apparently it did pretty well but it came ou in 2005!

During the Japanese occupation of Korea 1904-1945. There was immigration from Korea to Russia empire and then to the Soviet Union . This results in Korea becoming the second largest ethnic group in the far east of Russia.
After the battle kalin gol 1939 Stalin ordered to move all ethnic Koreans to the Asian center to prevent spying from Japan. And immigration from Korea was stopped during the second world war
During the immigrant era, Koreans still lived in Central Asia
