- The Playstation 2 AKA PS2 has some great shoot 'em ups (shmups). Some of the shmups that I cover in this episode are some that I have never heard other people talk about on CZcams, so I though it would be fun to showcase some shmups that defined the PS2 as a great system for shoot em ups.

Which system had the best Shmups? If you don't say PS2 you are banned. JK LOL
If you have a PS2(can play PS1 games), Sega Saturn, Dreamcast and a Wii (can play Gamecube games and could emulate TurboGrafx-CD, Sega CD, Super Famicom and CPSII, Neo-Geo, 90's classics arcade boards) you get 97% of the best shumps

The PS2 seemed like an era when SHMUPS were overlooked in general.
I noticed this too. The 2D run n guns were also overlooked in this generation
@@BigRetroShow Because the console had the greatest 3D action games ever...I absolutely love shmups but the PS2 has other strengths.
The sheer number of cave games on the 360 makes it my personal favourite. My RGH 360 still gets used on a weekly basis

That was a great watch. I added all of the games to my PS2 wishlist. Gracious V and Raiden III have my most attention. Strikers would be more of an extra buy since I have the Psikyo collection.

I'd enjoy a part 2! There are some here I'd almost forgotten about. The PS2 really does have an impressive library all across the board.
It’s been a lot of fun rediscovering some of these games and getting to play some of them that I have never played before
I didn't play many shmups on the PS2. I always felt intimated by em as a kid. Lol. I mostly got my Shmup fix at the Arcades.
With that being said these look amazing and I missed out BIG time Holmes.

I find the schmups on PS2 are a set of games that have help up incredibly well graphically. Nice to see a game that has more than one hit too!

I played one on the PS2 but i can't find it. You start on earth and fly up a pillar until you fight an alien queen.
I used to enjoy playing shmups. I wasn't good at them, but I enjoyed them xD I never really played shmups on the PS2, but my friend brought over some rented games that were shmups on the SNES. I remember one was called Bio something.
Yes the SNES was a great console for shmups. I always used to love the arcade ones although could never get far lol
@@BigRetroShow I used to always get to like the 3rd level in the game for the Bio one I mentioned. Progress halted, but still kept playing from the start.

I would definitely enjoy any of there for a bit of fun (with the infinite lives cheat to keep me interested in playing). Also, (though you didn't mention it in the vid), it's good to know SHMUPS are still alive and well in the world of indie games.
Yes indeed. There are some really well made indie shmups that keep it going.

Honestly wouldn’t have known there were so many Shmups on the PS2. Although it’s library is pretty massive. Really great video man! I love this genre but am typically terrible at it. 🤣 Just wanted to say thanks for all the content over the past year. Hope you had a great Christmas.🎄 On to 2023. 🍻

Nobody forgot about these. These are literally the most common shmups that everybody knows about. Forgotten shmups would be like Castle Shikigami 2 and Mobile Light Force
Great lineup of games! The Dreamcast has a good lineup of shmups and is still getting new ones today.
Dude I might just have to do a DreamCast shmup review. I haven’t explored them and I’m curious
@@BigRetroShow Earth Atlantis for the PS4 (previously sold via Playasia) is another unique shmup I would like to purchase but probably for the Switch since it's cheaper, it's available for the Switch digitally and physical copies can be had at VideoGamesNewYork. It's worth taking a look at for the different art style.
If I got asked about great PS2 shmups, Gradius V and R-Type: Final were my answer. I could never forget those gems. These are must-owns for shmup lovers!

Raiden 3 is super challenging but with enough practice i managed to 1cc it i own it physically on Nintendo Switch

The PS2 is a great platform for shmups.... DoDonPachi DaiOuJou (JP), Espgaluda (JP), Dragon Blaze, Homura, Tengai and Stag XII. All excellent.
