"How thoughtful, Mr. Zhongli. What is this, some sort of puzzle box?"
"Yes, a simple gift, Lady Ningguang, to celebrate your rebuilding of the Jade Chamber. I've had this antique in my possession for quite some time."
"I assume you're now going to regale me with its exceptionally long-winded history."
"Well, how else might you properly appreciate it? But you'll be glad to know that I don't have much to say about this item, if only because there's not much I know about it myself."
"I was joking. Do tell. You know I always take care to know the value of anything in my possession."
"This is an artifact of Guizhong, the late God of Dust -- specifically, her last gift and challenge to Rex Lapis before she passed. It is said that all her wisdom is hidden within this stone dumbbell. It would unlock only when it has found its way into the hands of someone who understood the true purpose of Liyue. What it truly means to reach for prosperity, and to be a guardian of its people's hard work, safety, and future."
"...I see. And as the story goes, did y - did Rex Lapis ever manage to unlock it?"
"Regrettably, he never did. Either way, it's just a story."
"Well, good thing it's a beautiful piece of decoration anyway, because if even he wasn't up to the task, I suppose it will stay shut forever."
"I wouldn't be so sure. I have faith that someday, someone will be able to unlock it. And when that happens....we'll know that Liyue has finally found a leader worthy of protecting it."
Zhongli would leave her office shortly after, but Ningguang sat alone at her desk, staring at the puzzle box, late into the night. Ningguang wasn't blind -- she'd figured out who Zhongli truly was, and so she knew what this gift truly meant. What she didn't know was the motive with which Rex Lapis had entrusted this to her. Was it faith? Doubt?
Perhaps she was only asking these questions because she'd been asking them of herself for some time.
...well, it all hardly matters. The puzzle box is hers now, and so is the responsibility of looking after Liyue. One way or another, she'll just have to deal with that.
So Ningguang reached out and took the Memory of Dust in her hands.
….. the box, surprisingly, looked rather rigid for being a catalyst. It didn’t respond to elemental power, nor human stimulus. Yet, for some reason it just felt, alive. As so, Ningguang just….. couldn’t forget her curiosity about that thing. “Maybe it’s just a decorative ancient artifact. But then why would Rex lapis entrust this upon me? Huh, well it won’t by reaping any benefit for me by just living rent-free in mind.” Ningguang placed the box on the centre of the table in her office, just so she could be reminded of its significance of being entrusted by zhongli every time she makes a decision that changes the economy of Liyue and the whole Teyvat.
…………. Zhongli returned to wangsheng funeral parlour, only to be greeted by hutao “Hey mr. zhongli, how has your day been? Have you attracted any new customers? You could invite them to come here, I make them accustomed to all our amazing new offers and discounts, you could tell them we………’
“I’m fine miss hutao, unfortunately, I didn’t seek for any new customers today. I had a rather, personal business to attend to. How has your progress been for today?”
“Aah, nothing much. Most people don’t even have a listen for my offers, they just run off similarly as scaring off pigeons. Maybe I should change my discount offers, ah, or I should distribute some pamphlets in the city hall. (sigh).”
But then hutao gave a subtle smirk to zhongli, saying “ but you know mr.zhongli, you don’t have to lie to me. It’s pretty obvious that you are not fine, you seem anxious. I have been observing you since past two days. You have been rather silent this whole time, or should I say, absent. You haven’t even had your evening tea since then. Tell me mr.zhongli, why have you been so anxious since past couple of days? Is there something troubling you? You know that I could help you if you ask me.”
“Hmm. Thank you for your concern miss hutao, but I’m unsure of you being any help for me yet. I would love to explain it to you, but it’s rather outside of your understanding capabilities.”
“Well, I know you will for sure find your way, you always do. Till that time, we can snack on this plum flower cake I just brought my way back, xiangling gave this to me. Look, it has small Casper shaped petals on it, it’s so cute!”
Zhongli and hutao have an evening snack while listening to the ancient poetry by the narrator.
“Miss Hutao, can you tell me what do you know about reincarnation?”
“Hmm? That’s pretty strange of you to ask me.”
“Why, is there any problem?”
“Nah, I don’t have an issue, it’s just that I assumed that you must be pretty well accustomed to the term, since you have such excellent knowledge of the ancient world and ritual practises for funerals.”
“Although I am well acquainted of many different aspects of life, I still, possess a limited treasure of knowledge. So, do you believe in reincarnation?
“Huh, it’s not much about belief in reincarnation, but how you believe in it. Since I’ve been to the afterlife many times and talked to many trapped souls, I think I might just be knowing about it much more than normal philosophers do. They say that reincarnation is the process of a soul leaving its body and being reborn at such time and place where it could reap the most knowledge from.”
“And how do you perceive reincarnation as?”
“Hmm, I’d say, reincarnation is just the way a soul is able to extend its existence throughout space and time. Your past lives don’t die, they are still a part of you, and your soul still holds all the knowledge it received before. It’s just that our minds are incapable of accessing it.”
Zhongli stood silent. Although, of course he already knew what reincarnation and afterlife was about. And yet, he was mildly shocked by Hutao. Maybe all he needed this whole time was a simple change of perspective.
He thought to himself, “if a soul already has all the knowledge of its past lives, how long would it take for a mind to see it? More importantly, how long will it take for her to remember it? Huh, if only the objects from past lives could change the mind of the present, or, if only friendships could transcend through different lifetimes………………”

I was casually enjoying the soundtrack. I found one with two of my loves: Ningguang and Zhongli. and then I read THIS.
Man, I just adore the theory of Ningguang being Guizhong reincarnation. And this...this felt so good reading while listening to the music.
Damn I would read more! Do you write?

[edited as of october 2022] at the beginning i can imagine zhongli recounting his memories with guizhong until he lost her, then as it transitions to rex incognito (0:48) it shows zhongli guiding liyue all throughout the years. the part where it gets epic (1:50) would probably be the endgame--the battle against celestia with the traveler leading it. and during the battle he remembers guizhong through ningguang (2:11) as she leads liyue through the battle. and with that, he is reminded of the reason why the seven and all of teyvat is rebelling against celestia. With the millelith assembled, the adepti and the qixing ready for battle, the lowly wangsheng funeral parlor zhongli continues to the frontline, suddenly emitting a warm, golden aura of light. And lo and behold, the citizens of liyue have found themselves defending their safe harbor with no other than the Rex Lapis Morax, Prime of the Adepti.
If I had to write this as a story, even tho I can't write it'd be like this
Guizhing just died, he's standing at her grave and rethinking the things he did with her, drinking tea together with cloud retainer, smiling and laughing with her, long walks through Liyue and such, and as shes smiling it cuts to:
Then we see him as Rex lapis in the centre where the last Ning rebuild the chamber quest was talking about his predictions for the year, it cuts to him walking through the paths of Liyue harbor, just strolling, but somethings missing. He meets the traveler and you see him and the traveler buying Jade, and later, sitting at the restaurant like in the archon quest
*Cue epic part
Zhongli, on the ground with his old Archon outfit looking up, it's the Traveler, sword in hand ready to face the Sustainer of the Heavenly Principles. There's also the jade chamber floating towards them, Zhongli sees Ningguang on top of it, he sees how determined she is to fight as well. Zhongli knows a mortal as she won't make it if she engages but he knows she will. *Cue first drop 1:51
Zhongli transforms into a dragon and throws himself towards the Sustainer of heavenly principles, but gets pushed back by a hit of those red rocks, he falls onto the jade chamber and sees Ningguang looking worried down at him. The Traveler then pursues the Unknown God, in the blast Zhongli gets knocked off the Chamber and Ningguang against a wall. She sees him fall and for some reason jumps down towards him, arms spread out 2:14
Zhongli sees her and starts seeing Guizhing briefly in her and they have an upside down hug in the sky, the fall to the ground but Zhongli protected Ningguang,
Then, when he looks back up towards the Unknown God and the Traveler, he sees that The Traveler has stabbed the God in their stomach and the fatal hit colors the sky black in a blast of power. *Cue the last sound *2:37

It is definitely one of the most emotional pieces Frost has ever composed. I got really teary-eyed. I mean like really. It is so amazing and beautiful, especially the strings and the piano.

Whenever he looked at her, he couldn't help but smile. Her will, her grace, her beauty. He was happy to know Liyue in her knowing hands. But he couldn't stop thinking about the fact, that he would love to have someone like her by his side. But he would have to see them grow old and die alone. However cynical it may was, he never allowed himself to love. And even if he did... Could someone like her bear the burden of him being an archon? Of him being 9000 years old? Would it be gross to someonr like her?
I recently started playing Genshin and now that I do, I had to share this because I think of it whenever I listen to this

feels like the last stand of liyue against celestia, zhongli badly wounded in the war but still fighting until he no longer can.

I'm waiting for mihoyo to confirm that Ningguang is indeed the reincarnation of Guizhong. There's too many clues abt it. Also the recent archon quest proves how strong & smart she is.
@@aryisweird a reincarnation doesn't have to be an exact copy. Of course some parts are different bc they're different people
Reincarnation or not, there are 2 questions I want answered about Ningguang. Firstly, her lore states she wasn't granted a geo vision, but rather found one and reawakened it, like Kazuha. There's only a handful of vision bearers in Teyvat, so whose vision did she find? Secondly, how does she know how to operate the Guizhong Ballista? Only Guizhong and cloud retainer could have known that.. And I doubt that Cloud retainer taught Ningguang, given that she doesn't exactly approve of her. Furthermore it's weird that Cloud retainer would teach Ningguang how to operate the ballista, and not Ganyu? So how?
@@eternalbrainrot6402 i mean it doesnt matter whose vision she reawakened, plus, the guizhong ballista can be operated if the right mind is used. this woman has a floating palace ffs the ballista is child's play to her. also, why not ganyu?
@@aryisweird I don't think Ganyu knows how to operate it because during the Archon quest, Cloud retainer said "it is fortunate, that there is one among us that knows how to operate the ballista" And she meant Ningguang. I find it kinda odd

I do not dispute that there are many facts that indicate that Ningguan is Guizhong. But with the same confidence, I can offer Tartaglia for the role of Guizhong. Do you know why? Because there are theories and proofs for this, such as the Chinese symbol "fateful meeting" or sticks with a dragon and a phoenix that symbolize a wedding gift. And many more things. I prefer to wait until the mihoyo themselves tell us the truth. So, to say that Ningguan is Guizhong is pointless now :D

Zhongli himself watched Ningguang grow up, which is very weird, plus it's not even confirmed that Guizhong and Morax had a thing for eachother, even if they did, Zhongli didn't like her in that way back, please refrain from pairing up a 20 year old woman with a 9000 year old ex-archon, it's weird, and illegal, big words coming from a Yanfei main
