I think he's a young guy who's done well enough to buy himself a ranch. He's "living in a paradise that makes me think of two." But ultimately, he's still alone, like the old man. They both are human beings who need "someone to love them the whole day through." I think Neil was looking at his ranch foreman and thinking, "that could be me someday, old and alone." Like, he's looking around himself and thinking, I've got this place, but WHO have I got?

Don't sleep on the guitar performance, one man playing the bass line, rhythm, melody, and fills, all at once. It is very difficult to play as he is; especially while singing and remembering the lyrics that he recently wrote.

I love this intimate performance with just Neil & his guitar (harmonica). He was only 27 when he recorded this song as a young man. Now he is an older man at 77 years old. Neil is a very talented musician, singer & songwriter. He was with the groups Buffalo Springfield & Crosby, Stills & Nash in the later 60's. Also had his own group with Crazy Horse for a few years. Neil went solo & has had so many great songs over the years. The albums "After The Gold Rush" & "Harvest" from the 70's are considered 2 of his best.

My son was just 31 when he died in 2015; he had grown to really love Neil Young after listening to some of my old albums of his and this was his favorite song by Neil. We played this song at his funeral and now I always feel melancholy but full of love for my son when I hear it. It's so sad that my son never got the chance to become old himself.

There was aterm we used, back in the day, to describe someone we knew that had died. We would say "he was a good man". Those five words sum up a life...and they are powerful.

It's the age-old story of the young man looking at the old man, and vice versa. Talking about how the old man, was once a young man just like him. It's a beautiful song about life and something most of us will go through.

"Lullaby" is what the old man refers to him as, it's a conversation between two people with the only thing in common is the need for love, the young man wants it, while the old man lost it, hence the coin that won't get tossed rolling home to you.

My favorite songs from Neil are Harvest Moon, Southern Man about racism,Ohio anti war song about the USA national guard ordered into a peaceful protest at Ohio State University where they opened fire & murdered innocent students … these are only three favs I love 💕 He was at Woodstock with Crosby Stills & Nash. This song may seem solemn lyrically but in reality, it's uplifting and real af. Ex: "Old man take a look at my life, I'm a lot like you"... ie: Neil was wise enough at his young age (20-something)) to understand that the struggle of the old man was the same as his. The struggle is universal. The centery u were born in, age, gender, skin color, societal class etc does not matter... our struggles are the same. There's so much peace, solace and comfort in Neil's message in this song. Peace, light, and love...💞

This was a time in our history where the big issue was the "generation gap". The baby boomers. Alot of young people. WW2 babies. The two generations were so different, and disagreed on many things. Some of their parents didn't see what was broken about the way civil rights were established?!. Crazy. So it was a real mind blower for this hippie to say: 'if you take a step back and look at it as a whole, we are much more alike than we are different, and that way of thinking might just be the solution.'
At least that's my opinion and embellishment of his song.

Great reaction! Especially pointing out that profundity of the odd reversal of the young man seeing himself in the old man rather than vice versa...Like you said, it raises so many questions...Is the "Hollywood" life that strenuous? Or is life in general that way? Is he commenting on the inevitability of humanity growing old? Timeless indeed....
9:20 Your words remind me of the quote of the Greek philosopher Herodotus, "In peace, sons bury their fathers. In war, fathers bury their sons." Which has been the ultimate lesson of war for thousands of years, it robs the next generation...again, as you said, he is telling us to DO BETTER for the next generation...

I always thought he just saw the older man as who he would eventually become, they are people, people who need love, dignity. Too many people try to keep the generations at odds, we are each other. There is the line “As I am now so you shall be.” ☮️ Little boy sit on the corner and cry

I was ten when this came out in 1972. That was during a time of great social upheaval. People talked about the generation gap because because many kids and young adults were very different from their parents. There were protests over Vietnam, illegal drugs moved from the seamy side of town into middle class neighborhoods and Hollywood mansions, we had the women’s rights movement and the civil rights movement, draft dodgers, sit-ins, mini skirts and bell bottoms, flower power . . . It was pretty crazy. I always thought this song was Neil’s way of telling the older generations that he was a lot like they were in their youth, even though he looked very different. I grew up in the sixties and seventies and I realized decades later that the musicians I grew up listening to had themselves grown up in a more traditional environment.
Now I learn that he’s talking about the foreman of his ranch and that puts a new spin on the song. It doesn’t change what I already thought. It just adds more depth. I live in central California and know people who own ranches or farms or who work in agriculture. Most of them were born to it and were put to work as soon as they could carry a bucket (not full time, of course). I can only imagine what it was like for the hardworking elderly foreman to suddenly find himself working for a twenty four year old musician who was able to buy the ranch. I wonder if they had conversations about it or if the old man had made comments or given Neil looks that expressed contempt. The line “Doesn’t mean that much to me to mean that much to you” to me suggests that the foreman didn’t really respect him.
Great reaction, as always. Keep up the good work.

Neil pretty much always either contemplated time and aging or loneliness in his songs. In this song it's both. I think part of it is that he's looking at the old man, alone on this farm, and realizing he's on a path to be in the same place when he gets old.
It always sounds sad, even when he considers the song funny himself. If you want to hear him rock out and clearly not take himself seriously try Farmer John.

I always felt that Neil was singing as though the old man may have looked at him as a young and naive. Possibly not respecting Neils way of life since it was not "manly" work and thinking the two of them had nothing in common and were worlds apart and Neil was trying to say we are more alike than not.

Neil Young is a fantastic songwriter/singer. Would love to see your reaction to Ohio. It was a protest song Neil wrote in 1970 after four students were gunned down and killed by Ohio state National Guard at Kent State University. They were peaceful protesters. Neil was so moved by the tragedy he wrote Ohio that day. It was recorded by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and stood as a strong protest song during the Vietnam War. Thanks for the great reaction to Old Man. 👏👏👍

I’m a lot like you - I need someone to love me the whole day through…look my eyes, you can see it’s true - both of them need that. That’s how they are alike. The song is the love for the old man, the singer needs that kind of love.

Like you, for the longest time I didn't get the line, "Doesn't mean that much to me to mean that much to you"..Then I think I finally got it..He's telling the old man that it's ok if the old man is indifferent to what he's saying..He still wants to tell him about it..Also, when he says "I'm a lot like you" he's just saying they are really no different (aside from age) in what most people want out of life, and that is to have someone love them, bottom line..That's how I take it, anyway.

My perspective - I felt when we were young, the older generation didn’t think much of us. Didn’t care for our music, and thought we were wasting our lives away. I suppose in some ways we did. But isn’t that what growing pains are? Trying to find our way in life.
The Vietnam war was raging and the young guys had no way out because of the draft. So they went. And they died. And we protested. (Rightfully so). So there was a season of rebellion and “dropping out of society”.
I see this song as an attempt by Neil Young to somehow try and bridge that gap.

He saw the man, who'd worked hard and made his way thru life, and Neil had already been thru some stuff, so after being on the ranch awhile with him, old man reminded him of himself. So, he wrote a song about it.
