Join me on the Night Rivera Sleeper train across England, from London to Cornwall. This 9 hour trip will take us over 300 miles, overnight, to the most westerly point of the UK. Starting at London Victoria Station, we’ll take a look at the First Class lounge complete with food service and showers. Today I’ve booked a sleeper cabin, so I’ll be sharing exactly what this is like, the various facilities such as the bathroom, food service, onboard restaurant and other rooms available onboard.
I aim to give you the experience of what it’s like to travel on this iconic sleeper service. Perhaps this is something you too would like to try out? Personally I find waking up gliding along the countryside is one of the most rewarding parts of trips like these. Plus the feeling of going to sleep and arriving somewhere many miles away from where your departure is a truly thrilling part of the adventure.

I used that train for 10 years, every sunday night until 2015 , home to St.Ives after a weekend of 18 hour days working in London. I wasn’t alone, I knew quite a few Cornish lads who did the same. We’d meet up at Paddington - sleeper passengers had the use of the First Class lounge from 4pm, with complimentary food and drink. It’s best if you can get a berth in the low numbers, after 10 years I knew a lot of the staff and always managed this. The higher 20 something number berths are too close to the toilets and their drainage tanks for comfort. And like the very low numbered berths, are over the wheels, making for a bumpy, pitching ride. Best if you can get a cabin in the low teen numbers in the middle of the carriage and as far away from the wheels as you can. The glorious , sweet scent in the air when I used to open the window riding through Cornwall in the early morning was the most uplifting thing I’ve ever known.

Everything is so GREEN in England. I am an Australian and have been aboard the Indian Pacific train, that runs through some of the driest desert, mainly red and brown , from Sydney to Perth and back.
It rains a lot here that's why.

Because if how wet it is. Most of the UK has been described as 90% of shades of green. The lake district is very wet hence its such a vibrant green

Oh yeah that is very important, but still the experience from what I’ve seen is still definitely worth it with the sites that you’ll see on a trip like that, especially if it’s one that goes across the entire island

I have for years been obsessed with cozy spaces, I regularly watch videos about house boats, cabin cruisers, campers, and even sleeper cars and sleeper cab semi trucks. I just discovered this channel a few days ago and have been binging it ever since!

I have the same obsession, but also the idea of finding a not suitable place and make it cozy, like finding a way to sleep comfortably in a empty bus, listening to the rain outside.

A little bit of nostalgia for me here. 50 years ago (almost to the day), my father drove us across London and we caught the old sleeper service to Penzance to start a new chapter of our lives. Despite being very young I still remember being super excited about the prospect of sleeping on the train. I also remember falling asleep immediately and waking up in Penzance. Lovely to see the refurbished carriages. Thank you!

Travelled with Night Riveria for the first time as an exchange student in Plymouth from overseas in 2000, and just did my second journey onboard to/from Penzance last week… the experience is equally good
As a Cornishman, I was interested to watch this and it didn’t disappoint. Just one gripe: until it is eventually renamed after years of population displacement from the South East, what you called “Hayes South” is actually a town called Hayle.
These train videos are seriously so much fun to watch! You've become one of my favorite channels on CZcams; keep it up!

Catch this the other way - from Cornwall to London for a day in the office every 3 weeks. Wake up at Paddington - raid the first class lounge for extra coffee & croissants before heading on. The bed is a bit narrow but I’ve never fallen out. They do have other options for breakfast - I usually have coffee & porridge.
If you are awake the coast from Dawlish to Teignmouth is great - moonlight on waves - or when there is a good storm.
The locomotive that's hauling your train is a Class 57 diesel. They were originally built as Class 47's back in the 60's, and a handful were reengined in the late-90's/early-00's and were reclassified Class 57. The carriages are Mark 3 sleeper coaches, and are the only such coaches still in service after the Caledonian Sleeper retired theirs.

I remember back in the early eighties getting the sleeper train from Bristol to Edinburgh two or three times a year when I was based in South Wales, my military travel warrant covered the cost of the journey and it only cost me an additional ten or twelve pounds to get a sleeper compartment, it was great getting your head down around eleven at night and being woken up around five in the morning on the approach to Edinburgh.
The bridge you are crossing at 10:25 is at Hayle ( not Hayes South ) and is utterly unique. It's the only bridge in Britain that you have to go under twice to pass through the town when driving. True story. You're welcome. ☺

I used this Night Riviera sleeper to get from St Ives/St Erth Cornwall to London Padd in mid June. Very impressed. Relaxing, friendly service and enjoyable 24 hour lounge. The bed is narrow [it needs an extra 2 inches I think] but the mattress very soft. I'd advise anyone using this service to get ear plugs because the ambient noise from the train when you're trying to sleep can be intrusive. The bacon roll was very nice. No fat on the bacon, just lean rasher. I hope to get back to Cornwall this year and use the sleeper again. i found this service by accident. I'm glad I dropped on it.
I love using this service, and normally head for bed when we reach Reading. I once booked it as far as Newton Abbott but you end up on the platform there at some crazy early time in the morning in a deserted station, and I had to sit and wait for the first train to Torquay.

Many years ago there was south-west to north-east sleeper service which was stopped because it wasn’t popular. You can travel from Penzance to Aberdeen on a through service but it takes a long time.
Ha, I've got to say "Hayes South" bears a striking resemblance to Hayle 🤣
If anyone is considering to take this method of travel, here's a few things to bear in mind as I've been on this before. If you're on a tighter budget, I do not recommend booking the coach car for the entire night, the seats if you want to sleep are extremely uncomfortable and I feel that GWR does this so you book the cabin and spend the extra money next time.
When being on the train for an excessive amount of time, if you're alone in your carriage or there are very few people, try walking down the carriage for a few laps to stretch your legs, I did this and it worked quite well.
If you are on a tighter budget, I wouldn't recommend using the sleeper at all. Take a day train and try to find advance tickets, and stay overnight in a cheap B&B, which will give you a much better night's sleep.
Watching this as an American is astounding. I live 245 miles from a mall and we do this trip regularly once or twice a month as a “day trip”. I know the US is MUCH larger than most other countries but it never quite hits me until I hear what Europeans consider a ling trip.
My sister lives around 350 miles away from us and we drive to go see her regularly and don't really consider it that strenuous of a drive. Of course American roads are built for big cars and interstate travel and British roads are built for horses and wagons, so they're narrower and more curvy which could be more treacherous to drive for a long time.
This video was recommended about 2 months ago and inspired me to take a return sleeper, I spent the day in Penzance today and on the sleeper back now, thoroughly enjoyable.
Have done this trip probably a dozen times. Including with 3 kids. I love it!! And the new cabins are lovely.

TY for this video. I am an American, but a strong part of my heritage is from Redruth, Cornwall. At the top of my bucket list is visiting Cornwall one day. I knew that a train would be involved from London, but did not know it took this long. Lol, I have never been on a train. Quite simply, even though we have only a few in Miami, Fl. almost none use it. I have fond memories of my Cornish influence, especially the Cornish pasties. I think if I made this trip, would be tucking one aside in lieu of "train food." The stories from my grandfather would make Cornwall scenery seem like a bit of a heavenly storybook to me. The stories of his briefly doing harsh child labor in the tin mines there, before coming to the USA remind me of a time in many countries that should make us grateful for the protections we have today.
I like to imagine Will leaves the cameras behind when he does his deboarding shots and there are just hundreds of cameras strewn across the world.

The refurbished train was absolutely beautiful!! It looked practically brand new, well until you got to the bathroom but seriously, even the view outside of the windows were absolutely stunning. Meanwhile, this is def a sleeper train I would travel on & the countyside that I would LOVE to visit. A+ 🤗

It's a continuous 24hr ride - yes, twenty-four hours straight - and *none* of that is spent horizontal, just perched in a non-reclining train seat.
Never, ever again.
I enjoy these train videos so much, plane reviews have gotten so standard, i think i've seen every business class already, but this. This is very new and interesting to watch!

I once camped in Newquay, Cornwall. I needed to see my girlfriend (now wifey) in sheffield on the second Saturday.
I picked up the train in Newquay, changed at Par and then three times more. Sheffield is “up north” but for benefit of US readers, actually it’s not far at all - it’s in the middle of England.
This journey took 10 HOURS.
I reflected in the fact that I could have travelled across the pond and still had time for breakfast or a drink.
This was 2 years after privatisation and the services have deteriorated further since. £96 SINGLE in 1998.

The UK’s most westerly point is actually Rockall in Scotland. If we’re talking towns, then Belleek in Northern Ireland is the most westerly settlement.

My first sleeper experience was the Night Riviera. It stopped at Reading for the best part of an hour, I must've dozed off then because when I woke we were still stopped so I opened the blind and the station sign said Plymouth!
0:27 pretty sure the most westerly point of the UK is in Northern Ireland, but yeah looks good.
St Kilda (unless you count Rockall) in Scotland is actually the furthest West in the UK

Great report!, I've done it 3 times now and love it! Good ride is down to the BR mk3 carriages of early 80's vintage but stiĺl about the best for ride quantity. The loco was a BR class 57 I believe with 2,800hp!

Just booked this exact trip. Single sleeper supplement was only £40 (late September and midweek so probably low demand). I reckon that's a bargain compared to a hotel for the night.

I like the hotel style key card. Amtrac has zero security for your belongings. The train looks lovely and very comfortable. The sleeper cabin is the way to go.
I love Cornwall and this is extremely cheap for a bed and breakfast whilst heading to Penzance enjoying the views from my cabin. I like how you made this video to share what it is like.

I never knew this service existed and if I'm being honest I could hardly believe the journey was 9 hours long! Great video and thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
The normal day service is about 5 hours. I think the train goes particularly slowly on the overnight service.

I would love to be able to travel like this. I really don't mind flying, but the current airport situation is horrible; and the ecological impact of trains is significantly lower than many other means of travel. Of course, it takes a lot longer, but that can be a nice part of the fun... slow (comfy) travel.

I caught The Canadian across Canada a few years back. Not only did my travel agent have no idea it even existed, it's also quite a rough ride with plenty of stops thanks to CN's monopoly of the rails and the importance of freight trains (which earns CN money). It's like a hotel on wheels though, 4 nights total with restaurant quality meals 3 times a day. Plenty of on-board entertainment such as live musicians, and you've got the skyline cars to look out from. (It's Canada, expect some good sights.)
5/7 though, would definitely recommend. Long distance train travel doesn't get the appreciation it deserves.

And CN makes sure it costs you an absolute fortune. as you have no other train choice. Total rip off.... Do yourself a favour and take a plane. The sooner we get rid of this monopoly the better...

@@annekennedy8127 I spent $2500 just to get to Canada, I'm not going to waste money just to fly over the top and miss all of it. The Canadian was a marvellous journey and the experiences on the train were great. I wasn't paying CN, I was paying Via, CN merely dictate the use of the rails and make you wait patiently while their freight trains go by.

Los Angeles to San Francisco via Santa Barbara is an 11 hour trip by rail -- perfect for a sleeper train like this, and much more efficient than spending most of the day flying, and much more comfortable than the day train and shuttle bus option via Bakersfield.

I don’t think so, £75 for one sleeper bunk ticket and then an additional £75 supplement?! If Amtrak tried pulling a stunt like that they’d be in worse financial straights than they are now! At least the Caladonian is honest in their pricing instead of pulling shady gimmicks like this!

I've travelled on this sleeper times a few times, I've done both journeys with a room and without any just in Standard carriage. Travelling from Reading Berks to Cornwall. My mother lived in Isles of Scilly which is 30 miles out to see, can either get there by 3hr boat ride or 25min small sea plane.
Found your channel today and enjoyed the video, looks far better that I had imagined a sleeper in the UK could be. One small point, Penzance is not the most western point in mainland Britain, Ardnamurchan, in the very remote western Highlands, is the furthest westerly location.
I think he meant the most westerly station really, as Penzance is not even the most westerly point of Cornwall either
Wow! Being a train buff that is amazing always prefer your train vids to your plane ones to be honest. So lucky as well, in Australia there is trains but very much cater to the tourist market in most cases and totally expensive. The train seemed very empty though which is sad as need passengers to keep it viable and running. Look forward to your future train vids. :)

Definitely a good train to ride- did it about a month ago but I booked far in advance so it only cost me £104 which is much cheaper than spending a night in Cornwall!
Great video! I tried the Capetown -> Pretoria on the Rovos Rail, it was an amazing experience with sightseeing at Kimberley (diamond mine), great food and bar in the observation carriage. You should give it a try!

Ohhh this is interesting! My aunt lives in Penzance and I normally fly into London from Dubai stay overnight in Paddington and then take an early morning train or I fly into Amsterdam from Dubai, stay at Schiphol for the night and fly either to Newquay or Exeter where my aunt picks me up. This might actually save money and for sure will save time. Might try this next time I visit Cornwall.

I went on this train from Reading to Penzance because of the noise and bumping of the train I didn’t get any sleep and I got the creepy memory of looking out the window one time because I was bored and it was the middle of the night we where stopped at a very small rural train station and there was 1 man standing at the station he was reading a book with one hand and holding an umbrella in the other hand he was wearing older style clothes and he looked up at me looking out the window smiled and then looked back down at his book I told my mum who was with me and she thinks he was either a time traveler or a ghost
