- Performance for RTL Veronique in 1989. This is probably one of the last performances that included Alan Murphy. He joined Level 42 as a full-time band member in 1988, and played with them until his death in October 1989.
Poor Alan, he looks so sick. I love that he seems to genuinely be having fun with his mates despite what he must have been going through at the time. RIP to one of my favorite guitar inspirations, Alan Murphy.
+GiantSpaceMonkey yeah just think if he was still alive, he was such an underrated guitarrist, some of his licks and ideas was so original, he was ahead of his time
+Funkmaster K Absolutely. I am always thrilled to know I am not the only one who loves his playing. Cheers!
Are you crazy, after the Gould Bros. left the band, i bet it was Mark and Mikes only reason for carring on with Level 42 getting him and hubby. Kinda of the same as now where we have Nathan, another underrated guitarrist and Pete on drums and Sean on sax WHO is 1000 times better and more interesting that Krys mach. But back to Alan, his solo and riffs in Heaven in my hands and on the entire album is some of the best guiar player ever
@@Generalbas1972 Always love Level 42 and Always Alan's guitar work in "Staring at the Sun" album. Always his fan since Go West, Total Contrast (His guitar solo on Entangled was the best thing ever)
Oh, And Mike latest solo stuff was very good ❤
@@kidwaryodproduction true Mikes latest solo was fantastic. But let's be honest. Staring at the sun isn't Level 42's best album. But Alan's guitar work on Heaven In My Hands, Gresham Blues and especially Man is so amazing. he also gave Mark and Mike some new writing ideas so he made a big impact on both of them. so did Hubby btw :)
Alan Murphy: a portrait of dignity and courage, despite the fact he probably felt terribly sick here.
He was one of the greatest musicians I've ever heard, but much more importantly by all accounts an absolute gentleman, and total professional.
He wasn't just a victim of HIV, he was a victim of time and probably ignorance too.
Rest In Peace Alan, and thank you.
All these people commenting on Alan's physical appearance.Well, he wasn't as superficial as you lot! He just turned up & played guitar like the professional he was... he obviously wanted you to just enjoy the music! Enjoy the music!
I swear looking at Alan here in comparison to the previous year, it sure saddens me to see him like this. But the look Mark had on his face looking at Alan is just really heartbreaking.
I saw Alan and spoke to him 3 months before he passed away at the Princes Trust-he looked very different to here-not sure when this was filmed but was def after July19
I remember hearing Mark say in an 1989 interview that when they were making the official video for that song Alan asked him if he could get a stand-in and a day later he found out Alan was dying in hospital. Very sad. Great guitarist.
@@mjfan3709 he looked more ill at that gig than here. He was clearly ill throughout.
@@mjfan3709 'Take Care Of Yourself' was released as a single in October 1989 to promote their first greatest hits compilation 'Level Best'.
So sad to see such an extraordinary guitarist Alan Murphy far from looking his best yet sounding totally in control - heartbreaking he went so young, and what a talent. RIP.
Rest in peace Alan Murphy, he died 3 days after this single came out. ✌️😢
My best friend and I still are fans of Level 42.
His catchphrase to me is always "Take care of yourself".
R.I.P Alan.
Saw him in the RDS in Dublin 1988
Surprisingly, Murphy in this video - despite being closer to death and evidently having lost hair and grown thinner - seems fitter and more active than the Princes Trust gig earlier the same year. Fair play to him for doing what he loved and continuing to live a private life away from media. Anonymity is best.
Yip, Alan was a fantastic guitarist, he's on alot of Go West albums then obviously Level 42's, his playing is very distinctive, quite sad to see how ill he became in 9/10mths on from the Level 42 tour, always felt L42 was in the wilderness for a good few yrs after Alan had died, band & guitarist wise.
Remembering Alan Murphy who passed away 24 years ago today. R.I.P Alan.
Alan Murphy was a great musician 30 years old, he is still sad to know that he is gone, I do not like to watch this video it breaks my heart to look at it like that, rest in peace Alan
vastly underated song from this top group
Yes this one really got "caught in between"......I wish they play it live next fall....
This song isn't as popular as it should be
Pazienza......In English. .....I Don't.....sacc. .....
The best.
Love this song. Mark King looked so freaking hot with that haircut!😍😍😋😋
Such a wonderful and haunting song. Must have been a really exciting time period in England. AIDS has taken so many of my favorite musicians' lives.
Such an uplifting joyful song, loved it for years
Very difficult to watch - he still looked well at the Princes Trust gig earlier in the year (I have the original DVD & he played a blinder). Huge inspiration and influence and sorely missed.
I was at the Princes Trust, although Al looked unwell in hindsight he looked much healthier than this, so so sad, Had the pleasure of meeting Al hat night.
This is priceless!
looooove them😘😘😘😘.....great greeeeat musicians, great bridge.
..like as with Scritti Politti's Perfect way-this is jaaaaazz, people... difficult arrangement...
You’re right. It’s totally Scritti Politti! I’d never noticed it before.
I was there and stood right before the stage in front of Alan. He was so thin and looked like an old man. This was such a nice guy. Sad story
Where was this filmed? I agree its so sad!
Great song to start the morning! :)
Never seen this before. Thanks for sharing! Great seeing all the band enjoying themselves.
Alan was also a guitarist for one of my favourite singers Kate bush on her hits babooshka breathing army dreamers running up that hill the big sky experiment iv and her cover of rocket man he played guitar at her live concert in 1979.
Still miss hearing you Alan. Sure you're impressing wherever you are...
Thanx 4 sharing! Love this tune!
Are you ready?
(Yeah yeah)
Are you ready to rock?
(Yeah yeah)
Do you want to do it?
(Yeah yeah)
Get down on it?
(Yeah yeah)
Marching clock now he don't stop
Seen it quite a lot
& he says take care of yourself
Old man sighs, shuts his eyes
& leaves behind another life
Take care of yourself
Millstones swing, 'grind your thing
Pay the tax & alimony
Take care of yourself
Raise that boy, he'll go far
'Cos he had a real good teacher
Take care of yourself
Truth don't go, don't go far
Sell a lie to any paper
Take care of yourself
Sleep too deep, zombie sleep, & all alone it has to be
Take care of yourself
Peace of mind is hard to find
But he don't mind like you don't mind y'all
Big t don't care that you don't mind
No she don't care & you don't matter
1-9-9
Oh here we go
May the next 10 break the mould
Take care of yourself
Mister good's gone away
Looking out for no.1 says take care of yourself
Did she say where you'd have to stay
When the party's over?
Can you face the longest march to come
Now you know you're not the no.1?
Yeah yeah
(Feel alright?)
Yeah yeah
(You know its 'packing in your mind?)
Yeah yeah
(But the hero says)
Yeah yeah
(I get blind anyway)
Yeah yeah
(Doesn't matter to me)
Yeah yeah
(Whatever you say)
Yeah yeah
(I got more than yesterday)
Yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah
I didn't like this wen it came out - it was too different. Its grown on me so much and now this is the track that my year 5 old daughter loves the most - and shes had too listen to every song L42 have done many times!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing ! Fantastic Al Murphy !..
RIP Alan Murphy
E' skiattato?
@@zagortenay114 Yes. Alan Murphy died from AIDS complications on 19/10/89. He was just 35 years old.
At 1:23 Mark looks at Alan with such desolation. Quite poignant, in retrospect. It's a great video of a great song, though. Thanks for posting.
Lee Brown agreed
@@smashmash Thanks for the comment. Missed it, but indeed, very touching. Made me emotional even now. So clear the look on Mark's face, how he stopped smiling at the camera and compassionately looked at Alan.
And Alan acknowledges the look.
@@pendago8484 Mark always said the band didn’t know Alan was ill. I find that hard to believe looking at him here and at the Princes trust gig three months earlier. But if you look at the documentary they did on L42 you, you can see Alan was suffering from severe weight loss and muscle fatigue compared to how he looked a year earlier with Go West. There was already very little muscle on his arms and he had previously been a fit guy. Dreadful virus.
Oh that's heart-breaking. Mark's expression changed from a fun, in-the-moment smile to a "I'm worried about you" expression in the blink of an eye.
Always a Awesome group.
Most Level 42 fans are aware that Boon Gould (God rest his Soul) provided a lot of lyrics for Staring At The Sun album , this in itself is a great track however I do feel a lot of the magic from the song writing was gone after Boon's departure from the Band course that's only my opinion. Still a great live band.
Just found this gem by Level 42. Mark King's bass playing is the driving force behind most of their songs, and this tune is no exception. I prefer Phil Gould's playing, but I have to admit Gary Husband does an admirable job. Not too familiar with Alan Murphy's guitar playing.
The late Alan Murphy replaced original guitarist Rowland 'Boon' Gould (who is also sadly no longer with us) and played on Level 42's 1988 LP 'Staring At The Sun' and it's hit singles 'Heaven In My Hands', 'Take A Look' and 'Tracie'.
However, 'Take Care Of Yourself', was actually released as a single in October 1989 to promote the band's first greatest hits compilation 'Level Best'.
R I P Alan.
30th anniversary
Mhhhhhh.. ...
Alan knew he was HIV positive before he joined Level 42 after he reportedly got tested in Ireland.
He was more than a match for Boon, and played brilliantly on the album.
The Fait Accompli video was entertaining especially Alan snapping the vidcam.
Pity David Hepworthless had to be a typical bastard to him on camera. I think Alan knew it but kept cool.
His best work is Go West.
There's still a good bit of ignorance around Aids now, but back then the ignorance was utteraly overwhelming.
Have you checked out his work with SFX? Truly stunning.
Uh, wow. This is surreal, and somewhat poignant. Check out the look Mark gives Alan at 1:23. This vid would've been made not long before the album "Level Best" was released on the 30th of October. Alan died on the 19th of October, before the album was released. I think the band might have already known Alan had a death sentence. This explains why, to me, the band just seems to be going though the motions. Too bad, I heard he was a marvelous musician.
Temazooo
the nuts!
Sad to see Alan. But great to remember him.
What a legacy.
Not sure the crappy end of Level 42 was a fitting epitaph. He was much better than where the band were heading at that point . Their best years definitely behind them.
RIP Boon
Ma chi e'?
@@zagortenay114 Rowland Charles 'Boon' Gould (brother of original drummer Phil Gould) was the original lead guitarist in 'Level 42' from the band's formation in 1979 until 1987.
He also co-wrote many of the songs on both the 'Staring At The Sun' (1988) and 'Retroglide' (2006) albums after his departure.
He tragically took his own life in 2019 at the age of 64.
Irónico título de la canción , pero al menos Alan Murphy nos dejó huella
I am crying . the great Alan Murphy knew he had aids and was going to die but kept playing almost to his last breath . I am not religious but Alan certainly deserves to be in a better place now, in some form of carbon which we always were for billions prior and always will be for billions of years in the future, perhaps for eternity. ... ("...We are stardust
Billion year old carbon We are golden Caught in the devil's bargain And we've got to get ourselves Mitchell ) . The official "mainstream" account is that Alan died of pneumonia caused by Aids . I don't know . At about this time in the usa anyway, big pharma pressured congress and the medical establishment to use AZT in heavy doses($$$$$$$$$$) . The result was it killed the aids and also killed the host " the human beings" . terrible crime it was .
Yeah AZT was not good, just made it virtually impossible for anyone to get better again with auto immune issues. But don't hate me for saying that if you never question big pharma, I loved Alan, that's all that matters!!
@@eddiecousinsjr i was younger then , i didn't question much of anything . i question big pharma and its history all the time now . in the usa the fda is becoming ever more corrupt in letting big pharma have its way
@@emo4126 Yeah I hear you, its too scary for most people to even entertain or believe especially as the want big Pharma to be their saviours during this pandemic, unfortunately nothing is ever as straight forward as they would like to think when large amounts of money and power overreach are involved. Shame really....
Fuckin shame what a guy RIP mr murphy
RIP Boon ✝️😢🙏🏽😇
Salutamelo😇😆😄!
Alan nurphy rip
The sound of go west alan
Take care of.......World. .....it's....The end.....
Unwatchable. Alan Murphy must have been on the verge of death at this point.
I always thought this was a good line up.
This lineup is definitely elite level with Husband and Murphy. Well done to Mark for choosing them. Unfortunately now the band is like a glorified cover band - no really new material and year in year out touring and playing songs that are 30-40 years old.
How are they a "glorified cover band"? Mark King still fronts them so its still Level 42.
And what'srhe issue with them playing their older songs.
When people go concerts they want to hear rheir favourite songs performed live in front of them, and they tend to be older songs. they don't necessarily want to hear new songs. Yes on the radio or streamed but not always live.
They're hardly gonna chuck new stuff out every couple of years nowadays are they? I'm grateful they're still around and Retroglide along with Sirens are enjoyable albums. PRB is superb on drums too.
I agree that Sirens is a great EP but I equally love listening to Starchild or Love Meeting Love too. I saw them live in Cologne in 2019 (pre-corona, good times) and everyone in the audience was around 50 years old and basically wanted to hear the old stuff.
@@peteandurnot Keyboardist and founding member Mike Lindup is still there, too.
He's been back in the fold since he returned to the band for the 'Retroglide' album in 2006, after which his temporary substitute (from 2000 to 2005) Lyndon Connah left for pastures new.
@@stephenalanmoore7278 ah that's good to hear.
Take care of your pants
How queer.
Rarely does a band make a video for the worst song in their entire catalogue....congrats L42 for achieving that.
