Theorists, we haven't talked about dangerous weather in a video game in a long time. In fact, I think the last time we covered it, it was Austin! So it makes sense that he's the one to tackle the mystery of Minecraft cold biomes. How COLD do they get? Are they DANGEROUS? It's time to get your diamond armor on as we tackle what may be the deadliest thing in Minecraft... the COLD!

Hearing Austin talk about his daughter making him build a treehouse is the most heartwarming thing ive heard in a while
Imagine if we had teachers as interesting and enthusiastic as Austin teaching us math and science in school. We'd all have seen better grades in those subjects just because he'd hold our interest.
I know a Geography teacher like that who I will have next year so I'm some lucky students would have math teachers like that.
But our math and physics that we learned also would be very, very wrong.
@@Doubleranged1 so true, but talk about a fun class! It would be the only one where the instructor would teach on a curve rather than the students be graded on one.

At 16:48, 41. 86MJ is just the heat you need to remove to cool the water down to 0C. To freeze water at 0C you would also need to remove energy from it. To freeze 1kg of water require the removal of 334 000 Joules. A ton of water means 334MJ.
So, the total energy need to be removed 375.86 MJ, which would make the temperature of the icy biome much, much lower.

Oooo, I like this
Intresting...
Basically an Austin Science Theory on Food Theory channel.
Takeaway: Steve weighs two cats.
Unfortunate takeaway: Given how it was determined that Steve weighs two cats, we can likely assume that iron, gold, and diamond each weigh nothing in this world because Steve would sink exactly as fast while wearing all of it, so Steve clad entirely in gold armor still only weighs two cats.
Maybe that's how he can carry so many 1m cubed gold blocks? You would have to be stronger than God to lift that much weight if it weighs as much as Earth gold
I refuse to agree with this because you can break a tree and punch a cow 3 feet into the air with your bare hands in the game.
They don't have to weigh *nothing*, just be the same density as Steve himself. However, the weight would change depending on if we use the floating item size or the placed item size. And now I'm curious if blocks with gravity fall/sink at a different rate than Steve, because I'm 90% sure sand sinks way faster than Steve in water. So everything being the same density as Steve doesn't make sense. Then again, this is a game where cutting away the bottom part of a tree leaves the rest of the tree hovering in midair, so I don't expect gravity to make sense.
It's probably best to assume that when Steve breaks an object into item form it become virtually weightless. Steve quite literally lives in a simulated universe so maybe items become some sort of quantum linked masses where the item form is like a script in a computer and when Steve places an object down the script basically tells the universe to summon back the original item.

Austin: has a mental breakdown
Austin 3 minutes latter: I LOVE MY JOB!
This is like 1/3 of the entire syllabus for my first semester exam tomorrow, actually really helpful and engaging for there topic, thank you Austin
Except there's tiny tiny problem with this calculation. You forgot about the latent heat. To actually freeze water you need to remove much more energy then just to cool down the water to 0C. You need to add 334MJ of latent heat difference between ice and water at 0C, so actual amount of energy that need to transfer is almost ten times larger XD
He also messed up the calculation for Steve’s mass pretty badly. First of all, he somehow dropped 2 orders of magnitude. Using his numbers, you get an answer of 970kg, not 9.7kg. Secondly, this assumes only a drag force, in water, the buoyant force is actually significant. Steve’s volume is between 0.3 and 0.35 m^3. If we account for the buoyant force, then Steve’s actual mass should be around 1270kg.
@@chrisjackson5072 huh! Tbh I was only listening to this video so that part went over my head, but "1 ton of water freezing in two minutes" gave me pause and I just needed to double-check, there's literally no way for this to happen with the results like that (or, honestly, any other possible)

It's worth noting that a desert does not necessarily imply that it is hot. You can get cold deserts. What makes an area a desert isn't heat - it's a lack of moisture. Usually the two things go hand-in-hand, but not always. Antarctica is technically a desert. I suppose you could also class the surface of Mars as a desert. Both are cold climates, both devoid of moisture.

Now, with a more sane explanation of the heat transfer formula, I can do the inverse to the meter of water in the tundra, and start on the path to figuring out how fast the wind would start moving if you placed an item of endless 0°C cold in a 36°C desert and had it start absorbing all the surrounding heat~

Just do keep in mind that if you ever do something with freezing and not cooling, that what Austin did was pretty wrong. Freezing water releases about as much energy as it would to changing the same about of mass by 80c. Freezing a cubic meter in 2 minutes can't even be done at the absolute 0, that's how big his mistake here was.

When Matpat gets back to game theory, can we have make a theory about the alley in Minecraft because it almost seems like they have more in common with illagers than anything else like why are they keep in cages or prison cells and why do they look like vexs
A boat is made of 5 wood planks in Java edition, so you could've used one of those with the terminal velocity equation to give you the mass. Each block is 1m cubed, so take that as you will.
Sand is easier and also probably more accurate
@@LucDaMan4 Yeah, but then he'd just run calculations on how a block of sand would fall if the air particles were running through the grains of sand, which would end up slightly more complex.
