- Our unforgettable trip to Lalibela was a spiritual and cultural experience that left us speechless. In just two days, we had the privilege of discovering the mysterious and fascinating group of 11 churches carved into the volcanic rock and the Neakutelab Monastery, a unique architectural jewel in the world.
We begin our tour with the iconic churches carved into the earth, where we are immersed in the amazing rock art and medieval architecture. Among them, he highlighted the Church of Bet Medhane Alem, the largest in Lalibela and one of the largest monolithic churches in the world. Its imposing vaulted ceiling and carved columns are an impressive testimonial to human ingenuity.
We continue our pilgrimage to the Church of Bet Giyorgis, known as the Church of Saint George, which stands out for its cruciform shape carved into the rock and its location in a deep moat. It is a place of devotion and spirituality, where the faithful gather to pray and sing hymns.
Another marvel was the Church of Bet Medhane Alem, which is believed to have been the former palace of King Lalibela before it was converted into a church. Its interior is decorated with frescoes and Ethiopian crosses, and its architecture took our breath away.
Each church had its charm and particularity. From the Church of Bet Maryam, with its impressive façade and carved columns, to the Church of Bet Amanuel, which houses impressive reliefs and frescoes of Biblical scenes, each holy place had a story to tell.
We cannot fail to mention the mysterious Church of Bet Abba Libanos and the exquisite Church of Bet Gabriel-Rufael, with its intricate details and architectural beauty.
In addition to the rock-hewn churches, the Neakutelab Monastery was another highlight of our trip. Situated in a remote and serene setting, this rock-hewn monastery offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding region.
The town of Lalibela, with its warm hospitality and vibrant culture, was also a delight to explore. The local people are friendly and welcoming, and their traditions and customs are reflected in music, dance and traditional cuisine.
In summary, our trip to Lalibela was an enriching experience that allowed us to connect with the history and spirituality of Ethiopia. Every corner of this magical place is imbued with a deep spirituality that is difficult to describe in words. Without a doubt, it is a destination that we would recommend to any traveler eager to explore the world.
