I've had this router table going on six years and you hit on every single one of the things that has bugged me about it. The thing is I never implemented any of the fixes, but I will definitely implement all of these (minus the document holder as I've lost the manual years back). Those bolts for the fence are the top offenders in my book. Thank you for making this video and sharing your tips and tricks!!

If you do happen to look at this comment, if you wouldn't mind I would love to know where you got those handles you use in the t-tracks to hold the fence down. As I've gotten older I like those large handles and things. They make life easier! Thanks again!

For anyone wondering about the fence handles check out Rockler's "Easy to grip short jig handle" or "Easy to grip tall jig handle" those seem to be pretty close. Happy woodworking!

Man, awesome upgrades! And I love your craftsmanship. I will have to look into getting that fancy hinge you used to make the upward-opening door on the cabinet below.
I have some questions on your dust collection, if you don't mind:
    1) What size hose are you using, and what adapter did you buy to attach it to the Bosch 2-1/2" collection port?
    2) What is this blue "cup" you speak of that sits under the router bit and collects 90% of the dust? Where can I buy it?
Thanks for posting a great video!

Thanks for putting this video up here! I recently bought this same table and installed the fence track based on your setup. Much needed improvement!!! Next, I’m going to give the fence the vinyl tape measure treatment as well. I’m surprised that Bosch hasn’t sent you a nice check for your modification ideas!💲💲💲💲 I will be coming back to this video several times as I finish my mods! Thanks fir the inspiration!

Wow! I've had this table for so many years, that I can't even remember when I bought it. But I never thought of any of the great modifications that you added! I'm going to add the handle for the door right away, as the stock handle grommet has been a pain for me since day 1. I do have one question for you: where can I find the tall handles that you used to tighten the fence to your new T tracks?
Thank you for your great ideas!

Thank you for posting this video, first off. I was considering purchasing this table via Home Depot over their Ryobi brand ($129 v $199). But now I think the cost to value (incl time) compared to others at higher price point (~$250-$300) might be a better option for many consumers. I really liked the cabinet you constructed for both function and practicality. Nice job and thank you for the thoughtful video!

Wow, those are some great modifications! I especially like the fence adjustment mods you made. I find it hard to find the tracks and knobs for them that fit. Where did you get those? Also, where did you get the silicon cup to add to the vacuum system? Great idea to store the tools too. On my table I just sanded down the sharp inside edge of the plastic ring you put your finger through to open the door and that worked just fine.
Any ideas for how to make the fence taller for routing a larger piece?

Until you have a router table with a real router lift, you don't realize what a PITA these little router tables are when you want to change bits or do fine adjustments to the bit height. I owned an RA1181 for almost 2 years before upgrading to a JessEm table with a lift. What a huge difference it made in my enjoyment level. I hated fooling around with that little table.

My pleasure. For just a few hours of time and cheap money it wound up being a much better upgrade than I had initially sought. I probably should have included in the video that I built a frame to use as a guide when I routed the table top out for the T-Tracks... I factored in the diameter of the base of my other router, created the frame based on where I wanted the slots routed and that diameter. I clamped the frame to the table top and off I went. A lot of planning makes the job go much easier and the results excellent... If anyone wants to see a pic of the frame, I still have it and I'll be happy to share... -Gil

Nice and functional mods. To be honest - I've found I have to modify nearly every single power tool I own - all because engineers fail to design properly, or CEOs want to cut costs, or use of inferior materials. I have an old Craftman router table that I've modified the hell out of, and 25 years later it is still a PITA. Looking either to get one, or just build my own. I have a real nice kitchen sink cut out with formica, roughly 32" x 16", that will most likely become my next router table. Just shaped and laminated it today, and was watching videos on best ways to rout the recess for an after market plate. Came across this video - good job. A very function set of mods that ought to last you a lifetime.

    • @gillis9999
      @gillis9999 Před 5 lety

Yeah, same here. I place most of the blame for design shortcomings and crap material on sales and marketing departments, as that's where many of the good engineering ideas go to die. Now retired, I was a manufacturing supervisor, industrial engineer and finally an IT Infrastructure manager. In those forty-six years I saw many, many downgrades to product forced on the company in the name of "being competitive." If you can't sell a superior product because it costs a little more, you should find a new line of work. (End Rant...) ;)

If you're talking about the vacuum system, I had to drill a hole in the back of the box. You need to be kind of careful in mapping out the location of the hole as it's semi-critical...

Always baffles me why companies just make stuff that's crap. Clearly what you've done is how it should have been in the first place and for very little cost to Bosch. Trying to find a small budget router table in the uk which isn't absolute shite is impossible!

Common sense ideas that Bosch engineers should had implemented in the production of this table. I guess seeking advice from people who actually using their products in real life or having a pre-production beta-testing program is not part of their product development.
