    Man it's crazy to see how far you've come over the years I've been watching your videos, i think at least since the HH super strat build. From diy kits in your shed to building guitars with lasers. Not only has your tooling upgraded but as a builder and a maker your skills have reached another level. You're an inspiration man, good luck in life and all you do. Thank you for the content

    You just keep upping the cool factor with all these interesting builds you are doing. So glad to see you in one place so you can really get creative without having to deal with a mobile home. That is frigging awesome to see a full 2 octave fretboard on an acoustic guitar. The design is fantastic and I sure look forward to seeing what else you accomplish. Keep up the great work Dan!

    Fascinating proof of concept project! I'd love to see a neck constructed via laser cutting. As well, if you could address tone wood options that are viable in this framework, that would be interesting. Keep up the good work!

  • @markpell8979
    @markpell8979 Před rokem

    For a proof-of-concept exercise this is daring and fantastic and you've incorporated some design features I want in an acoustic, being primarily an electric solid-body rock/blues player, that are basically just not available now from traditional acoustic builders/manufacturers. The PRS-style scooped cutaway and sloped 'arm carve' created by stacked lamination are great ideas for what normally are difficult, labor and skill intensive design and construction challenges. As far as the visual aesthetics, just fill and sand all the surfaces like it's an electric and paint it! Your results remain to be seen on how this guitar will sound when played acoustically but a good pickup and preamp system gets you past that and you're not trying to build a Martin anyway. Purists of course are nauseated by your experiment but that's partly why I love it! Kudos for stepping way outside the conventional box.

      So now I've watched the video, and very interesting. I'm very curious about the sound. I do like the build process and yes, it could be very interesting and a very efficient way to build a guitar.
      I've also thought that on acoustics you could cut the sides to bend with a laser, and make that much more efficient, and really much faster to build.
      Very cool, and also fun to see my older daughter helping out with the cello section at the string clinic today.

    Your acoustic design looks great! I love when people use unconventional methods, materials, and technologies to build instruments and this is one of the most impressive I've seen. My only criticism is that the bracing looks a bit thick using 3 layers, but I could see you wanting to play it a bit safe because the materials are untested. Can't wait for you to drop the next video of the finished product, I hope it sounds as good as it looks. I don't even mind the translucent veneer, it's a cool feature.

    Never wipe away wood glue. Let it drip and bead until it fully dries, then sand it away later. Makes less residue and easier sanding. I know it is hard not to resist to wipe the wood glue as it drips off the sides, but I find that the glue gets out cleaner and completely off the wood.

    Very interesting. Can't wait to see how it sounds. I have played a lot of vintage Japanese guitars that were basically plywood but never in this sort of configuration. Also played a few acoustics made of carbon fiber and one made entirely of aluminum. Can't wait to hear how this stacks up. I have my doubts as the sides are THICC and the bracing is completely off the rails but I love this sort of experimentation. Best part of your channel is I know you'll post an honest demo whether or not it works out 😁

    • @GunsandGuitars
      @GunsandGuitars  Před rokem +1

      You are correct, the sides are too thick. I did that on purpose because I wasn’t sure how much I was going to need to take off the sides once everything was stacked and glued together. Luckily the tooth pick retainers helped everything line up nearly perfect so I didn’t end up needing to remove much of the sides, lesson learned for next time. Also the bracing is overboard. A single piece of 5mm luan feels flimsy, but two pieces glued together is very stiff. I probably only needed one piece for each back and front bracing, so it’s a bit over kill. My prediction is that this thing will sound terrible 😂

      @GunsandGuitars  Před rokem +1

      I was going to list the file for sale on my website, but I wanted to see if it sounded good first. You can definitely cut 5mm luan with a 5w laser if you have a honey comb bed and air assist. It’ll just take a few more passes to cut it out.

    • @sinformant
      @sinformant Před rokem

      @@GunsandGuitars yeah I have both air asist and a honeycomb bed, have worked with 5mm plywood and it takes around 5-6 passes really slow and almost 100% to get through it. I can't wait to see this finished. Heck maybe a person could shrink the files down and make ukuleles. Lol

  • @rondelio8562
    @rondelio8562 Před rokem

    Great video, Dan! If you were to cut the parts out manually, how long would that take in comparison to the laser? As to the issue with the surface, you could sand back the shellac and stain it a medium tone color to hide the ghosting, yes? Great video, and good luck finishing up the neck and frets. Can't wait to hear it! 😀

    • @GunsandGuitars
      @GunsandGuitars  Před rokem +1

      I thought about staining it a darker color, but I liked the contrast from the sides, but that likely would have solved the thin veneer issue. As for cutting it out by hand, if one had some templates made and routed it using the templates, it would probably take the same amount of time.

    This is awesome! Time flew by while watching this. Why didn’t you sand it on the inside? I assume the inner sharp edges will be detrimental to tone. Thanks

      If this one works I’ll let it go for cheap plus shipping. Message me if you’re serious.

    Good video but Scar my Guitar guy came up with this idea in my opinion. You even used his shape. He used a router not a lazer.

    The whole project is based on making a nice-looking instrument without acquiring any knowledge of the acoustic properties and proper techniques of making such an instrument. As an experiment, it's ok, but the amount of glue, wall thickness and crude construction kills the art of guitar making. Instead of striving for perfection and mastery, an amateur is just a cnc operator.
    Plywood and laser are definitely usable. Quickly making a precise mold to bend the light sides and back of the guitar with this machine is a plus to use. Don't take shortcuts. Try to do something really worthwhile.

    Those layers look ugly like cheap plywood. You need to organize them in more meaningful pattern.
