In “drumless” beats, the raps are the percussion.

If drums are the deciding factor on whether or not it's hip hop, all those years on the block watching freestyle cyphers with absolutely no instrumentation at all must not have been "real hip hop", right? If you think hip hop needs drums, it just shows you're more worried about the beat being good than the lyrical content, however if you're more impressed by Lyricism than a beat, then drumless is perfect because it puts the lyrics as the main focus. That's how I see it anyway

hip-hop is more than just music, plus rapping is using one's voice as a percussive instrument.
poetry in of itself has beat and a pulse (using accented/stronger syllables or by even accenting them yourself, like Pac or Em).
rap vocals are drums, "drumless" is just more space for the artist to choose the main pulse of his flow

Only thing that matters is if the record is dope or not… whether it’s drumless or not is subjective. Every beat doesn’t have to be a science project. Drums or no drums, samples or synths… hip hop beats have been made all kinds of ways. This is just another phase of it.

a lot of mainstream stuff feeling like its doing too much + trying too hard, drumless really feels like a breath of fresh air when done well. i what appreciate so much about drumless hip hop is it sets a more "minimal" stage where the oral performance really shines. if im lost i use the voice as an anchor - yes lyrics but also cadence, inflection, and pace. Roc Marciano, Mach-Hommy, Billy Woods, ELUCID, CRIMEAPPLE, Boldy James are skilled storytellers, poets, and orators and their rhythm and flows are profound in that they can stand on their own - on a beat, no beat, drums, no drums. focus on the voice and everything else usually falls into place. i view their work as a cut above the rest as pinnacles of a contemporary oral tradition.

A good hip hop song doesn’t have to be drum beat dependent. Music has evolved. As long as you have great lyricism and the music is on point as far as the production then it’s all good. Being too beat dependent limits a producer’s ability to grow

As an artist who self produces time to time making a drumless beat does indeed take time, appreciation, creativity, and focus. Exploring the sonic nuances of a sample without the use of drums while also leaving space for lyricism is a very precise process. It’s a completely different process in comparison to other hiphop sub genres and the art of what goes into it should be known‼️ loved this video

Great content ! Thank you ! As a MC myself, I sometimes prefer drumless beats, as you can "attack" the beat in many different ways, because you're not a slave to the kick and the snare, if you know what I mean. I feel more freedom to pause whenever I want, and have a less orthodox flow. You can of course do it with drums, but sometimes it doesn't sound or feel natural. So to me, as long as it keeps the culture going, and keeps artists creating, I'm all for it. I don't think beats with drums are going anywhere, so to me it's only beneficial to the genre.

Back in like 2015, when I first heard NxWorries (Knxledge & Anderson .Paak) I was sooooo conflicted in my heart. On the one hand, it was such a refreshing new sound AND it was a new Stones Throw release, but on the other hand...... "this nigga really just looped the entire Jus' Us song?!"
But it WORKED so well, because of the overall vibe (instrumental and vocal performance combined). And I also knew that Knx probably had to dig into some DEEP crates for some of those samples.
I had to keep telling myself back then, there was some serious work put into this. A sample can only work if you MAKE it work, regardless of how nice the loop is. As stated in your video, its all about the SPIRIT and community.
What used to make the breakers break, is the same thing that drives the youth today.

In spite of it being a fairly recent phenomenon (sidenote: pete rock and preemo have been putting Ill ass drumless loops in between songs forever, and actually almost ALL of epmd's early work consisted only chopped loops, due to lack of owning a sampler, and only having access to records, a studio, and an 8trk reel to reel) For "True crate diggers", we have ALL found samples at some point, where one is like "it dont need nothin"...but maybe a few edits and loop points, some eq'ng...i get more annoyed with fully produced songs, WITH drums, with super over used, easy to find samples, than a dope drumless sample. It also allows for more cadence and tempo changes on the part of the emcee, as well as changes in inflection as one rides the instruments in the SAMPLE, rather than a more rigid 4/4 drum pattern. My two cents as both producer and MC

Plus not every break beat required drums or percussions. #HipHop been heavy on baselines as well. Thanks to #Funk with Parliament. Drumless hiphop isn't even really a thing. It becomes a thing when it's not done right. Correct drumless hiphop will rock with such atmospheric force and momentum that it won't even be noticeable as having no drums. The listeners heads will be rocking to the wordsmiths cadence, mind-blowing lyrics and the music's hypnotising momentum. If those elements are missing it's easily noticeable as being drumless instead of an afterthought. In short, not every artist and producer can rock it right. Oh and its definitely real hiphop.

I feel it's lazy when it like rappers just use any random soul sample to rap over just to do it because it's trendy.
Don't even care if it actually sounds good and coherent

These videos that pose these types of questions make no sense. Early origins of hip hop had nothing but drums and stabs for the most part. Rarely had melodies. It evolved. There are no rules. Dope is Dope.

the only people creating the ‘problem’ with drumless hip hop are the ones more concerned with the label and not the music itself. who. gives. a. shit. there’s enough segregation in the world, music is supposed to be unifying us and not creating more division and endless subgenres. let’s spend more time appreciating the craft and not putting it into boxes

    Drumless Hip-Hop = Looping Samples
I Understand Why Real Musicians / Composers Feel A Certain Way About This Sub Genre Of Hip-Hop. We Can Use Prince For Example.
Is This Hip-Hop Or Sampled Tough Guy Poetry? A Lot Of This Ish Is Missing The Music Part ..

This is a lot of fancy verbage trying to say that looping the best part of someone elses music with no percussive backdrop is somehow more creative than including the part that actually demonstrates your own talent! As the years go by what I've noticed is the least talented individuals are doing everything they can to legitimize zero effort while seeking to discredit tradition and actual musicianship. Sampling is an art form when done tastefully. Looping without drums and the inclusion of other sounds is tasteless theft by the untalented.

I think them watered down drums from these drum kits are bad for #HipHop let's go back to Carlos Bess who made original drums for RZA or boost drums again like Paul C 👑🕊️🍾

If you haven't tried actually making a good beat with just samples no drums, I don't think you can really say it's lazy. You don't know how to build and rearrange and restructure vocals and around certain elements in the instrumentation, then stfu and move on or stfu and enjoy the sounds.
