Full Floor Pan Replacement At Home - Fast, Cheap and Easy On Your Classic Car!

  • This is a video I have been very excited about to make! Everyone always talks about replacing a full floor in a classic car instead of patching together the existing floor. I have done A LOT of floor patch work in my day. I always had the attitude "make it strong and cover it with carpet". After doing the full floor replacement, I don't think I can go back.
It does look much cleaner than a patched together floor but that wasn't the selling feature. It was FAST, so much faster than a bunch of patches and welding individual braces. Plus once you cut all the old floor out, you're working with nothing but new metal! I will be doing this from now on for sure! The pan cost a few more dollars but you save in time, welding, grinding and you don't lose your mind.....
This ratty Tri 5 Chevy is coming together pretty nice. Stay tuned for the new video where the motor and transmission to go in.

I am old enough to remember when there were no MIG welders to do body work. Only BIG heavy industrial spot welders and Oxy Acetylene torches. I used these to do any body work that I could manage. Also patch panels from any dealers were astronomically expensive. So needless to say many of these older vehicles were relegated to the scrap yards when they could have been easily repaired. With the available parts and such now a days it has become much easier. I admire you're efforts to save what's left.

Good job Dan, although I must admit I was a little nervous when you started lifting the car with just the w.w motor hole. Glad you added the chains. Other than that, you made it look quite doable. And when you pay $300 for a 56 Chevy, you gotta expect to do some serious rust repair. Thanks for the video, looking forward to the next one, as always

I was kinda thinking along those lines but just take tires off and set the frame down on blocks, under lower control arms. Wood blocks just big enough to keep the brake drums off the floor. It would pitch/rake the frame forward. Actually give him more lift travel for the body if he needed it.

You now have solid foundation to work with. While at this stage of disassembly, it would more economical to install the disc brake conversion and know that the brake system is safe
for everyday driving. Suggestion: bolt in the truck 350, drive the car and sort it out. A race car you already have in the Dodge. A dependable driver would be more sellable to a wider buyer pool. The hi-po engine could be traded/sold to fund a late model LS motor. [ More power while a more street friendly driver.] The Dodge is a car you only drive 20% of the time. The
56 in street form would be a car you drive 80% of the time. Food for thought CJ

Another great video. We have seen you slave over the floor and subframe on the 57 with all the welding and grinding and now that you have done this your viewers can make an informed decision about which way to approach a basket case and breathe new life into it (personally after watching both projects I think the complete floor might even be cheaper by the time you get parts/discs/gas/wire and time).

Dan you did it, you make it look so smooth putting the floor in. I would have needed a second person to help me. I never get tired of Dani's expressions her eyes tell it all 😂

Dan you made that floor install look easy and a one man show . I'd say you're one man that can build a car from the ground up . Great build !
