Justine Henin vs Maria Sharapova Full Match | US Open 2006 Final

  • No. 2 seed Justine Henin takes on No. 3 seed Maria Sharapova in the final of the US Open 2006.
    Henin booked her place in the final with a tense three-set semifinal win over Jelena Jankovic and in doing so, became only the second woman to reach all four Grand Slam finals in the same year. Martina Hingis accomplished the feat in 1997.
    Sharapova secured her final spot with a stunning semifinal victory over World No. 1 and top seed Amelie Mauresmo, which put an end to her five consecutive Slam semifinal defeats since winning Wimbledon in 2004 at age 17.
    But will it be Henin's flashy repertory and superior movement or Sharapova's big serve and piercing ground strokes that secure the US Open 2006 title?

    Oh how I miss Masha's serve 2004-2006...Such a lethal weapon and it's really a shame that her shoulder injury caused so many setbacks in her serve in the following years. Huge respect for winning 3 more Grandslams while dealing with chronic injuries for sure!!

    It's a pitty that henin had to retire so early. She was one of the female players who played very clever, moreover she had a wonderful technique, I am not only talking about her awesome backhand....also her volley....an idol for all young female players because she brought the evidence that you can succeed by mixing up the game with topspin and slice. She showed us that it is ok to play a slice on the backhand side if you stand not proper to the ball...other players play in such situations the same 120 percent backhand as usual with both hands and producing a horrible error...

    People trash talk Sharapova because of the Meldonium scandal, but this substance was illegal until late 2015 (The last Grand slam Final she played was AO 2015). Prior to the shoulder injury (this happened a few months later after this match), she was a very impressive tennis player. I'm surprised by the fact that she won 3 more majors after all the injuries so kudos to her. I'm not going to say that the shoulder injury is the reason she didn't win 20 or slams or justified anything but she probably could have a better career that's for sure.

One of the very few players to have won all of the Grand Slams as well as an Olympic medal, she finished her career with an near 80% win ratio.

      @@fedvvvv I think she maxed out on her talent. She was never very athletic and her technique was very limited and flawed. Frankly it’s a miracle she was able to win so much (and on every surface at that), but that’s a testament to her incredible fighting spirit.
      That being said, the only Slam she realistically let slip through her fingers was the 2011 French Open. She was up a break in both sets in the SF against Li Na but kept gifting away the match with double faults and even ended the match with two double faults in a row. Had she won that she would have played Schiavone in the final and most likely won. I can’t think of a single other instance in which she was the clear favorite to win, but didn’t.

      @multiplemike5021 Před 2 lety +2

      @@regulusarcturus I would say Maria had her limitations but that is true of almost any player on tour. In addition to her tremendous mental strength, she played to her strengths which was predicated on power, precise baseline hitting and an excellent BH. She had a powerful first and second service early in her career. When she had her shoulder injury, her serve became a bit of a liability and she was never able to produce the type of tennis that allowed her to win the first 3 slams of her career ever again. But she adapted and became a clay court master. She learned how to slide on clay, and she adapted to the surface very well, learning to play defense and adding more variety into her game with a lob, drop shot, and slice. She also conditioned herself to play long rallies and outlast her opponents. So I agree with most of what you are saying, but I think her winning had a lot more to do with hard work and talent rather than a miracle. I think she could have won FO11 and AO12 (especially if she faced Clijsters in the F instead of Az).

    This is actually posted by the US Open and they make a mistake in their own description. Henin became only the 2nd woman ever to make all four grand slam finals in the same year and Hingis in 1997 was the only other? That is the way it is worded. You could say no woman has done it since Henin in 2006, or Henin was the first to do it since 9 years earlier when Hingis did it in 97 and either one of those would be true. But even just going back a little ways in the open era, Seles did it once, Steffi Graf did it at least 3 times, Chris Evert did it a couple of times, Navratilova did it a couple of times, obviously Margaret Court. Actually surprised that Serena never did it looking back.

      480i era. Television even for huger series like Friends, X Files etc was shot on SDTV, it is only the reboots that are 1080P. WWE only started filming in HD in 2008. It only really looks bad if your eyes aren't used to the old stuff. I was watching it from the late 1970's so really the picture quality improvement is really only the last decade or so.

    Жюстин наошибалась на несколько матчей вперёд. Как грунтовичка, обычно так много не ошибается. Ну а ШатАп-ова в своём репертуаре.

    Sharapova was just another Russian athlete who got caught doping during their career.

    I am biased with the doping story unfortunately, it may have played a role in her performance even though the Meldonium was not on the doping list at that time

      Для идиотов: Милдронат никогда не было запрещён. Его запретили после начала событий на Украине. Запретили втихаря, поэтому многие наши спортсмены даже об этом не знали, в том числе Шарапова.

    While Henin gets illegal on-court coaching from Carlos, Sharapova started taking Meldonium. What is their common denominator? Both cheaters!
