- "In a language written in fabric and thread, quilts carry our stories down through the generations, warming the body and the spirit," says Georgia Quilts Producer Carol Fisk. "On farms and in cities, quilting has provided a backdrop to our history. Utilitarian quilts, pieced from old clothes and scraps, tell the stories of people scraping a living from the soil. Fancy quilts, made from vibrant fabrics and intricately stitched, bring to life stories of the more affluent. In Georgia Quilts: Stitches And Stories, we see how quilting fashions have changed during the 19th and 20th centuries; families share the moving legends of their heirloom quilts; and we meet some of Georgia's current traditional and contemporary quilters."
Original Air Date: 1998

BEAUTIFUL 💖
Thanks to those who made this video possible. I’m a quilter and I really enjoyed the quilts and the stories and history of the quilts
So glad you enjoyed it!
I absolutely loved this video, the wonderful stories, the strength and determination of those women in the 1800s, who managed to create their great quilts after a long day perhaps in the fields,or general household chores, maybe also helping their husbands, I am glad that so many of them have been cared for and loved. Thank you to all you wonderful
and creative ladies, past, present and future.
I love quilting. I'm the only one in my family in my family that quilts and i was taught by my mother in law.
Love their stories 🧵🪡👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
My heart is smiling. Beautiful people and amazing jobs. ❤️❤️❤️
Very interesting video. Love the stories, fabric, designs, and the fellowship of quilters.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great to see those quilts from history-
I love this documentary.
Me Too: the reasons are real for quilts- lots of Civil war quilts- too and more! Thank you for these quilts!
Thank you! As a Georgian far from home and a quilter from a long line of quilters you have warmed my heart. I saw so many stories that could have been taken from my life and family. Thank you again for the memories and joy. My grandma was one of the sea stresses hired by the Metropolitan Opera when they traveled to Atlanta. Vera Elam made lots of lovely quilts.
Hi Anna. Was the quilt quilted first and then the appliqués put on or were the appiques put on the front and quilted around? Thank you.
while this is beautiful, how on earth would southerners need a quilt? was it colder back then? anytime ive seen Texas in movies it seems to be an incredibly hot and dry country
Thank you for your question! I am not sure about Texas but winter can be quite cold in Georgia, especially northern Georgia where the average winter low temperatures are often in the mid to lower 30s Fahrenheit ( about 0 - 4 degrees Celsius).
It gets cold and icy in the winter in VA, TN, NC, WV, KY, AK, TX, and northern GA, AL and MS.
I'm a transplant from New Hampshire, now living in Texas and yes, it gets cold. The winters are shorter and rarely get bitter cold. Cold enough to want to make quilts.
I was born and raised on the west coast of Southern Florida, as far south as you can go besides Key West and winters were in the 50 degree range which is cool enough to need a quilt. Also the south includes many mountain areas and coastlines that see snow or frost every year.
Magnolia Leaf? Looks far more like an Oak Leaf
