  • Fr. Edward watches a lot of movies. He likes most of them. He loves only a few. Irena's Vow is one he loves. It was a powerful story. In this interview, Fr. Looney speaks with Irena's daughter, Jeannie Smith, about her impressions of her mother's story and with Sophie Nélisse who portrays her. Irena's Vow is in theaters on April 15 and 16 as a Fathom Event. If there is a movie you are going to fit into your schedule if the days and times are not convenient, make it Irena's Vow.

There was significant difference between the circumstances of both women - one Dutch and one Polish.
The Dutch one was not facing death penalty for what she did.
During world war II in Europe Poland was the only country where helping Jews was punishable by death of the helper and their entire family - and this, I think, makes all the difference in the world.
Neither Dutch, or French, or any other European except Polish people would die for helping Jews.
One such example is Ulma family, recently beatified by Pope Francis.
It was a Polish family from the village of Markowa - husband, wife, and six little children - all shot by Germans for hiding Jews. The wife was in the eighth month of pregnancy, and exhumation showed her child was delivered in her grave. Despite their fate the villagers in Markowa kept hiding and saved scores of other Jews until the end of war.
Eilert Dieken , the German policeman who presided over the murder, went back to postwar Germany, and died as a respectable citizen, a local police constable, surrounded by loving family, well after the war.
I am not writing this to diminish the heroism of other nations, but most people do not realise what it meant to help Jews in Poland. Despite this, Poland has most trees in Yad Vashem, for saving their Jewish neighbours.
