    Still the best advice would be plain and simple: Don't overthink about your battery, and use your device to maximize whatever you needed it for in the first place. The battery health advice on this video is great, though, and certainly "not overthinking" doesn't mean "not doing at all".

    An excellent video ... very informative. I'm not a MacBook user, but I'm hoping to be one at some point in time and good battery life is a feature that I am very interested in. I have a Dell laptop running Windows 10 and it has a Dell utility that allows me to control the charging of my battery. I can specify the lower and upper battery charge limits which goes a long way to keep my battery healthy. This is of special importance with my laptop because Dell stops selling replacement batteries for their laptops after just a few years, and I have to rely on a 3rd Party vendor to provide a new battery. Unfortunately, such batteries are often of poor quality.

    As a Chemical; Engineer familiar with the chemistry involved, I think you give pretty good advice. Based on the testing charts of which I have access, using the 20/80 method will definitely increase the amount of total energy dispensed by your battery over its lifetime.
    I'm also glad you mentioned heat as a big culprit, because it is one of the biggest enemies of the health of your battery. One point I would like to make regarding heat is that the battery temperature can get high even when the ambient temperature in the room is still within Apple's recommended operating range. So, when at the upper end of that range, I might recommend monitoring the battery temperature, particularly when charging. I would recommend the battery temperature during charging not exceed 40 degrees Celsius and the battery temperature during discharge not exceed 45 degrees Celsius.. There are free monitoring apps that can make this information available.

      @robertfloyd4287 Před 2 lety +3

      @@maho4444 I do recommend it. The app stops battery charging at the level of charge you select. At that point, it has your computer use only the charger power and stops charging the battery. As such, it is safe to leave your laptop plugged in continuously, with no negative impact on the battery.

      this is "caused" by the Optimize Battery charging , in settings. It does it automatically although it will eventually charge it to 100%, plus it tries to do this based on how you use you Mac , plugged or unplugged during the day, so sometimes it may be a hit or miss. Or if you are really inconsistent during the day.

    • @John7No
      @John7No Před 2 lety

      @@hanifahsuranggana5907 no not really. The "feature" might be a hit or miss some times.
      example: a colleague of mine has her MacBook always plugged. The indicator just sits at 80%. This means that the MacBook decided that it will not go above that limit so it will not cause wear to the battery.
      So if you have it always plugged , after a few days you should see the same behavior. to not charge above 80% most of the times.
      Having said this, if you are a person that unplugs the laptop, take it with you and working on battery, the "feature" might not hold back since it will try to fully charge your battery when it thinks it is a good time.
      Just turn on the optimize charging. Run with it for 3-4 weeks. The just check its behavior and take it from there. You do not have to worry too much :)

      The 20-80 practice is what he suggests in the video. Keeping it plugged-in is ok as long as "optimised charging" is turned ON. This will pause charging at 80% and the MacBook uses AC power (thus bypassing the battery).
      But in my experience with M1 MacBook Air, I think it only happens to pause charging if you regularly keep it plugged-in. I don't keep it plugged-in all the time, so it never paused charging at 80% for me.

    hii thanks for the video. I have a question, how do you make your macbook only charge up to 80%? I have the optimized charging option enabled, but it always ends up charging up to 100%. I hope you can help me, thank you!!

      in my case using a macbook m1, during first month of use i maintained almost the same routine of use, and then automatically the mac charged up to 80%, and stop there for a few hours (notifying that it would start to charge completely in the next hours). the following days i sort of changed my routine and the mac returned to charge up to 100% automatically. i think what is all about is to establish a certain routine of use, even if it not exact every time

      @@RavinduJayanath I did. At this point the battery was fully charged and the mac was taking energy from the power adapter. After keeping my mac plugged several days, I unplugged it and let the battery drain up to about 30%. Then I plugged it again and it was the time when the mac stopped the battery charge at 80% cause I had the optimized battery option on.

      @@Techkhamun mine finally went to 99% with only 29cc after 8 months of using it. Plugged in most of the time. What I've noticed, battery percentage decreases fast once it dropped down to 99%. Now with 33cc, it instantly went to 96% just a while ago. Probably, it's not the cc that determines your battery health, it's how or how long you've been using it.

    This video didnt help at al because the main battery killer isnt really mentioned.
    The Mac OS internal battery optimization also doesnt really work well. I mean it can work well, but therefor you have to use the notebook very intense on battery and AC power and really "need" most of the the battery capacity.
    With M1 Macs, it changed pretty much and even 80% charge is "too much" for most things! Even if you could keep it always below 80%, the battery would not last much longer. I had a friend always charging to 100% without caring about the battery, used it always a bit and got around 300 charging cycles on it, but his desktop usage and 100% charges literally killed the MacBooks battery within less than 3 years, even broke the trackpad as the battery expanded!
    Its necessary to keep the battery as good as possible anywhere between 40 and 60%, this will make it last the longest possible. I am using AlDente and limiting the charge to 70 or 80% always, often im even letting it just go down within a few days and mobile usage, at about 40% i just top it up to 70% again and thats enough for another 2-3 days easily.
    Also, fast charging! Especially the 140" brick from the 2021 16" model.... yes its awesome if you need a quick charge, but i use mostly a high quality 65/45+18W combo charger, much better for the battery!

    the only thing that i could not maintain is keeping charge under 80%
    1st because it save me battery cycles
    2nd because i use it as a desktop
    3rd because i did not accept the only 60% usage when i can get 80
    i even feel that the best part is the first 20%

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx Před 2 lety +2

      Yeah because the Mac OS internal "battery optimization" doesnt work at all as it should, which begins with the fact you cant set charge levels manually!
      I would recommend AlDente if you dont use it already. Soon 150 charging cycles and still 99% battery health on a 16" M1 Pro base model.

    Based on my personal experience using MacBook/IPhone device(s):
    1. Should be charged to 100% on its first charge.
    2. On your next succeeding charges, unplug it upon reaching 80-89%.
    3. Don’t allow it to to drain below 20%.
    4. Right after charging between, 80-89%, power it off and after few seconds then power it on again, you will see that the battery percentage will increase by 4 to 5%.
    5. Avoid using your device while charging.
    6. Be sure to power it off when not in use before going to bed.
    7. Use only Apple authorized charger.
    8. Be sure to use your device often and not to leave it dead for many dấys.
    9. Remove your case cover when you intend to charge your devices, mainly that it will cause too much heat on the device during charging process.
    After practicing these tips, I have maintained a 100% battery health and guess what my MacBook and IPhone are 5 years old already.

    I recently had a Surface 8 Pro (amazing device) however the battery life was so abysmal I was constantly caught between a rock and a hard place. I could either use it with high performance settings, 120 refresh, and letting the nearly 3k screen shine, or doing intensive tasks on it and topping out at like 3 hours MAYBE 4, or hindering it, needing to keep battery saver on, 60 hz refresh, low brightness etc and getting maybe 7 hours doing simple web browsing. Coming from that, the long battery life on Macs has been a godsend.
