Wigs and powder should be obligatory for playing this game. Also large quantities of claret and not bathing recommended. More seriously it looks like a very enjoyable pastime. Thanks for well described and shot video.
Thank you so much for a lovely informative video. I have always been fascinated by this game , and I'm looking forward to having a go! Lots of skill and planning involved , and maybe a few blocking tactics ? Do you bring your own Mallet to a game ? or are there ones to borrow ?... Thanks..
It was invented in India by English officers from game of polo.It was taken to England around 1850 from Irish troops returning from Puna barracks after one of the battles injured soldiers played it for relaxation
Good video but there are still a few important unanswered questions which is holding me back on being able to play the correct way. Do both balls have to be played through the hoops to win? Can you Roque any ball including your own to get additional shots? How many additional shots can you get in one stroke, for example what if you hit a ball from your roque shot? Do you automatically have 3 shots?
Dear HenZoidYes, both balls have to run all the hoops and hit the peg in a full game: games are very often limited on a time basis - in which case the winner is the person who has scored most hoops.Roqueting a ball gives two additional shots: a croquet shot (balls touching each other) and a continuation shot. But a ball can only be roqueted once before the striker's ball has run another hoop.I will be doing some more detailed videos of the AC game....when I've finished the Golf Croquet ones!!Kind regardsIan Harrison
Not expecting an answer, but couldn't the red ball every turn hit the yellow one, through the hoops. So that team has infinite turns and win before team two can go?
Dear Ruth If you go to the Croquet Association website - www.croquet.org.uk - you will find the details on the drop down box headed "The games" Best wishes Ian
Dear SaulApparently it's played in Uruguay: see the list of members of the World Croquet Federation at www.worldcroquet.org.uk/index.php/about-the-wcf/wcf-membersKind regardsIan
Interesting. I prefer Association. I also prefer wooden tennis racquets, white balls and clothing. I appreciate the original games and find them much more enjoyable.
Nat: in theory it is possible for (say) the red to run a hoop and then use another ball (eg the yellow) to get to the next hoop, run that, and carry on until 12 hoops have been run. It's not easy! And then the opponent has a turn. If you're that good you'll be world champion in no time!
Nice video, good explanation of the game
Well done sir! Excellent introduction to the game. .... My first exploration into the world of croquet. Who knows where this will lead me?!
Very good explanation. A lot of people in Ireland think it's an English game would you believe .
