Such beautiful and thoughtful commentary to go with such a beautiful space! I love how you said, "We've moved away from a life centered around consumption and are now focusing on living a life of creation!" I, too, am on a search, and I know the answer is only found through actively participating and creating a life worth living. Thank you for sharing! I feel seen in this space! 🙏🏾 Christie 🧡
thank you Christie, I love that you are joining me on this path! I'm finding that the journey itself to craft the beautiful life is just as beautiful as the destination and I hope you experience that too!
Great story telling and a beautiful garden. I've also created a permaculture food forest in both my front and back yards and growing about 25 fruit trees on my tiny city lot.
I started my own large garden at a similar time to you. I also have a fair few chickens I related a lot with the reasons why you started your garden. Really beautiful
What a beautiful garden… and beautiful story! I can empathize with the search for “the good life,” and have been planning to do something similar in my yard (currently reading Hemenway’s book). Thanks for the inspiring video!
Love this video, we are in our first year of our food forest journey and watching content like this really fuels a fire that’s inside me to start flowing our own stuff.
I am in my first year of Maypop! Right now it's inside because of the erratic weather, so it's only three feet long but I have the trellis set up already. Just waiting....
Wow thats so cool. your garden looks great We moved to a house with a garden at the start of this year (my gf and me (~26y) + 2 cats) The search for meaning and happieness is very relatable. Starting a permacutlure garden/ food forrest is the best thing to do if you have the space
Love your garden. So glad I found your channel. I also grow in zone 8b. I’m a beginner gardeners so I have a lot to learn. Looking to learn about permaculture and to build my own forest garden. Where did you get the barefoot fruit trees from?
I got all of my bare root trees from Womack Nursery! Most bare root trees are planted while they are still dormant in the winter so they'll start selling them again during that time :)
@@rootmother thank you so much! I will definitely be placing an order in the winter. I am trying to get as much information as possible now and prepping the area before the nest growing season. 👍🏻 Are you planting anything new for the winter crop?
@@SHTM26 that's a great idea! for fruit trees, definitely try to buy from local nurseries if you can because they know what varieties do best in the climate/soil/prevalent disease conditions. I live in central Texas so I specifically looked up best fruit varieties to grow in Texas. Most university extensions have good resources! I've run out of space for trees but we're starting to gather seeds for fall brassicas and root vegetables. We're getting sick of tomatoes haha
@@rootmother i live in central Texas as well. I have some pear trees and blackberry bushes that were here in the property previously. They are not looking too good 😟 I bought persimmons and peach this year. Hopefully they do good. Im really excited to see my garden all change. Now I have hope seeing your channel and in such a short time you’ve turn it around, that’s inspiring! Thank you!
@@rootmother Oh wow! Fellow Central Texas resident here! Wishing you lots of luck on your channel. I subscribed to help your channel grow. I have a similar bare backyard at 1/3 of an acre and need all the inspiration I can get to get out there with it being so hot.
Love this! I got started with gardening by doing hydroponics and looking forward to doing more traditional gardening. I'm looking at different methods and with you is the first time I see permaculture on a smaller scale and I love it! Thanks for sharing and looking forward to seeing more videos from you! You have made a beautiful work of art!!
thank you! I too searched for examples of smaller permaculture projects and wasn't finding much, but I didn't want to wait until I got lots of land to start practicing permaculture. And then I came across this book called Paradise Lot by Eric Toensmeier and he created an abundant permaculture oasis on 1/10 acre which is even smaller than my space. You should check it out!
🤩 Love it! How big is your backyard (green, non paved area)? I am asking to re-evaluate my plans 😅 I am currently planning to plant one corner which is 20m2, and I am still debating if would be feasible to plant in there cherry, persimmon, pomegranate, pawpaw and apple. All would be kept pruned of course. Plus shrubs and other layers of food forest of course. And we think alike, I am also planning in such way that would have fruits growing from May till November (this is zone 7b). 😊
I think that could work! I was just in Japan and it's amazing how people fit so many fruit trees in such a tiny side yard, some trees were decades old but kept very small and were producing lots of fruit. What I'm seeing so far in my food forest is that any young fruit tree I planted under a mature tree is doing well as long as the southern side is open. So maybe think about having taller trees on the northern side and smaller bushier trees towards the south!
@@rootmother yes! Exactly my plan. To plant from North towards South. Every night before I go to sleep I try to visualise how it would look like when they are 3m tall 😬 Looking ahead to see your next video 💕
What did you do to the soil. Did you just cover the lawn with a membrane or did you just pour compost on it. I keep seeing different methods. Thank you the video. I need to get rid of the lawn here.
we didn't use any membrane! just lots of free woodchips we got from chipdrop. when planting the trees, I mulched around the trees with a good layer of compost and then woodchips. where we planted vegetables, we added lots of high quality compost and mixed it into the native soil.
@@rootmother thank you for your response. I have so many things to contend with here, sand salty atmosphere from the ocean as well as very stubborn Kikuyu grass grass but I will give this method a short. Have a blessed time in your forest💚
