The only thing I wish he mentioned is the game has PS1 dual-analogue controls if you have a PS1 dual-shock. That means you can walk around with the right stick and change the camera with the right stick. Unheard of control-scheme for PS1 games from the time.

As someone who speaks Japanese, I can confirm that according to Wikipedia and Nicopedia, Yuusaku Yara voices Raz in both titles. I'm assuming Yuusaku also voices both evil and good Raz, as their voice tones sound similar besides performance.

Yeah, I reckon the slower clock speed on the PAL system exacerbates the performance issues throughout the game and suddenly loading in all those assets creates a bottleneck in the system due to a poor conversion to the 50hz standard (the PAL build may have only been tested on developer machines and not region-specific hardware, or may not have had thorough testing.) The re-release probably just has a line of code added to it that causes all enemies that are currently loaded in memory to explode in the event of such an issue in order to prevent the crash. That's assuming that what happens in that room isn't identical in the original Japanese release, or something brought about by the emulator

I applied PAL4U to enable 60hz v1.0 burnt thanks to UniROM in the parallel port. I reloaded save outside room plenty, wasn't very often to crash but you wait much longer for room to start unlike v1.1's instantaneous

After watching through Game Informer's Overblood 2 super replay and Charlie's video, I completely understand Akihiro Hino's game design so much more. Its shocking how much of his future directing and producing work shows in this game
Wow! I'm glad someone else watched the GI videos. My bro and I watched all of their OB 1 replay. We liked the game so much, we got a copy and played in tandem with them. We never got to finish thier OB2 series. Charlie's video is a wonderful reminder of all the fun we had watching the videos.

Man, I love those early-2000s sci-fi tropes that this game mashes up. Even if some of them are cheesy and overused, they're still just plain fun and atmospheric! I especially love that this game doesn't do any self-conscious winks at the audience; it totally embraces its over-the-top spirit of adventure. That sincerity is key.

Given the recent news about how kids in the US are starting to talk and sound more like Brits thanks to various TV shows, I’d say Overblood 2 was ahead of it’s time in terms of its dub. Clearly they just knew where society was going in America… which is funny considering we didn’t get the game over here.

I think this is what they meant when they say "shit" game. But I mean this in the most positive and good-intentioned way I could possibly ever mean. This is what "shit" games should be like.
I was barely born when this game came out and I live in America, but I would consider myself a fan of this game despite never playing it. I was somewhere between seventh and ninth grade when I watched a let's play of this game and it gave me a lot of enjoyment during a rough period of my life and I'm thankful for it.
I absolutely loved that little segment at the end that talked about playing obscure games you never heard of. Quite a few years ago I wanted to try out Earthbound after hearing about all the praise for it. I decided to emulate it since I didn't have a WII U and when I was getting the ROM I saw 2 other roms from the same series next to it. I had no clue Earthbound even WAS part of a series and I downloaded Mother 1 and Mother 3 as well for the fun of it. I actually got kinda bored of Earthbound halfway through and decided to take a break from it by seeing what Mother 3 was like. I ended up absolutely loving it and actually stopped playing Earthbound to just play Mother 3 to the end. Its actually my favourite game now and I would have never played it if I didn't just try it out on random from an emulation site. Try out weird games people. Even if the games are shit you can at least say you experienced it.
Honestly I adore games like these that have the ambition but loads of jankiness and inexperience, they often provide experiences you'd never see elsewhere and in the rare moments when they do hit they stick with you

The part about "69 characters" reminded me of a similar text on the back of a point-and-click-adventure game I played. I think it said something like "3 breathtaking worlds and 50 amazing locations to explore". Thing is, what counts as a "world" and what counts as a "location"? When playing the game it felt like just one world and about 5 unique locations. Perhaps they count every screen as a new location. It's weird. x)
My friend was gifted this when it came out, we had never heard of it but what an experience it was! Absolutely hilarious game, kind of awful, yet it was so different and obscure in the most fascinating way that we could not put it down. Him slapping his arse at the start of the game is still burnt into my memory 20 years later. There was a certain mystery to games back in the late 90's/ early 2000's, going into Game and just picking random games out of the discounted section, I played so many objectively terrible games but had the best time playing them.
I love it when TGBS gives us these in-depth look at old obscure games. Always such a treat and they end up videos you can continually come back to time and time again.
Charlie this video gave me the biggest damn grin the longer it went on. I completely felt that energy you were expressing with how the game escalates its story while being totally sincere with itself, its a feel you can only really get from the experimental days of the 5th and 6th gen games. I'm kind of upset this game only got a PAL release, but I have already hunted down some ISOs to use in an emulator so I can experience this ride for myself. Your little speech at the end really hits it right on the head, about finding unique experiences in games that time has forgotten and finding the joy in playing them.
Well damn, now I HAVE to know what's in that secret level! You tease, Charlie! But seriously, you did it; this whole Back from the Dead series, and this video especially, is inspiring me to seek out whatever weird, underplayed gems could be out there. Who knows? There could very well be an unsung classic just waiting to be rediscovered. After all, if OverBlood 2 could be this incredible, then anything's possible.

I feel like I'm one of the few people who actually played this game when it came out. I never got really far into it but I definitely remember being somewhat awe struck with the scale and the world; the cooling towers in the game was always something that stuck in my mind even now

You got me thinking about the Raz situation and I thought of something that could help bridge the gap a bit more. What if Clone Raz DOES still have Evil Raz's memories but they put a mental block in place that stopped him from accessing them during the time of OB1? The only other case of cloning we see is Millie and she still has all her memories in tact as a perfect clone so it's likely Clone Raz, being another perfect clone, had his memories but was then brainwashed into forgetting them. Over the next 20 years the brainwashing would come undone and his memories would return to him, giving him back the knowledge and skills of Evil Raz but with the added experience of Clone Raz, making him actually become something of an amalgamation of both with him picking and choosing the details of his backstory depending on what's more convenient to the situation. Thus, he describes his time at Lystra Labs from the perspective of Evil Raz but leaves out all the stuff concerning him being a clone because, for all intents and purposes, he is THE Raz Carcy. The other scientists getting their memories wiped just gave him an easy out to pick and choose what he wants people to know that he knows.
The fact that Hino brought us this amazing Gem as well as amazing convoluted stories such as Inazuma 11 and LBX is mind blowing. He's truly my favourite video game writer without a doubt.
I wasn't expecting Overblood 2 to be THIS insane and interesting, given the lukewarm prequel. It's a damn shame it never got released State-side. Thanks anyway Brit! For introducing this unexpected gem. I wanna experience this fine-ass madness for myself now.

What you said at the end really resonated with me. The Back From The Dead series is some of your best work because despite the games being unconventional and obscure, you can see the creator's heart and dreams in the finished product. And only those games can truly be called legendary.
As well as Canadian voice-actors in Japanese games. I mean CAPCOM did utilized them from RE2 & MegaMan Legends, but slowly they kinda stopped utilizing them after Dead Rising 4.

Given the recent news about how kids in the US are starting to talk and sound more like Brits thanks to various TV shows, I’d say Overblood 2 was ahead of it’s time in terms of its dub.
Clearly they just knew where society was going in America… which is funny considering we didn’t get the game over here.

I think this is what they meant when they say "shit" game. But I mean this in the most positive and good-intentioned way I could possibly ever mean. This is what "shit" games should be like.
I was barely born when this game came out and I live in America, but I would consider myself a fan of this game despite never playing it. I was somewhere between seventh and ninth grade when I watched a let's play of this game and it gave me a lot of enjoyment during a rough period of my life and I'm thankful for it.
The 'It's Christmas' part gave me the best laugh I had in a while.
The world needs a resurrection of this series.

Yet another game you’ve convinced me that I must make part of my ever expanding collection.
I absolutely loved that little segment at the end that talked about playing obscure games you never heard of. Quite a few years ago I wanted to try out Earthbound after hearing about all the praise for it. I decided to emulate it since I didn't have a WII U and when I was getting the ROM I saw 2 other roms from the same series next to it.
I had no clue Earthbound even WAS part of a series and I downloaded Mother 1 and Mother 3 as well for the fun of it. I actually got kinda bored of Earthbound halfway through and decided to take a break from it by seeing what Mother 3 was like. I ended up absolutely loving it and actually stopped playing Earthbound to just play Mother 3 to the end. Its actually my favourite game now and I would have never played it if I didn't just try it out on random from an emulation site.
Try out weird games people. Even if the games are shit you can at least say you experienced it.
Honestly I adore games like these that have the ambition but loads of jankiness and inexperience, they often provide experiences you'd never see elsewhere and in the rare moments when they do hit they stick with you

Well something doesn't add up...
The part about "69 characters" reminded me of a similar text on the back of a point-and-click-adventure game I played. I think it said something like "3 breathtaking worlds and 50 amazing locations to explore". Thing is, what counts as a "world" and what counts as a "location"? When playing the game it felt like just one world and about 5 unique locations. Perhaps they count every screen as a new location. It's weird. x)

My friend was gifted this when it came out, we had never heard of it but what an experience it was! Absolutely hilarious game, kind of awful, yet it was so different and obscure in the most fascinating way that we could not put it down. Him slapping his arse at the start of the game is still burnt into my memory 20 years later. There was a certain mystery to games back in the late 90's/ early 2000's, going into Game and just picking random games out of the discounted section, I played so many objectively terrible games but had the best time playing them.
I love it when TGBS gives us these in-depth look at old obscure games. Always such a treat and they end up videos you can continually come back to time and time again.
Charlie this video gave me the biggest damn grin the longer it went on. I completely felt that energy you were expressing with how the game escalates its story while being totally sincere with itself, its a feel you can only really get from the experimental days of the 5th and 6th gen games. I'm kind of upset this game only got a PAL release, but I have already hunted down some ISOs to use in an emulator so I can experience this ride for myself. Your little speech at the end really hits it right on the head, about finding unique experiences in games that time has forgotten and finding the joy in playing them.
Every time I rewatch this video I end up with a big ol goofy grin. Fantastic video, cheers.

There could very well be an unsung classic just waiting to be rediscovered. After all, if OverBlood 2 could be this incredible, then anything's possible.

I never got really far into it but I definitely remember being somewhat awe struck with the scale and the world; the cooling towers in the game was always something that stuck in my mind even now

You got me thinking about the Raz situation and I thought of something that could help bridge the gap a bit more.
What if Clone Raz DOES still have Evil Raz's memories but they put a mental block in place that stopped him from accessing them during the time of OB1? The only other case of cloning we see is Millie and she still has all her memories in tact as a perfect clone so it's likely Clone Raz, being another perfect clone, had his memories but was then brainwashed into forgetting them.
Over the next 20 years the brainwashing would come undone and his memories would return to him, giving him back the knowledge and skills of Evil Raz but with the added experience of Clone Raz, making him actually become something of an amalgamation of both with him picking and choosing the details of his backstory depending on what's more convenient to the situation.
Thus, he describes his time at Lystra Labs from the perspective of Evil Raz but leaves out all the stuff concerning him being a clone because, for all intents and purposes, he is THE Raz Carcy. The other scientists getting their memories wiped just gave him an easy out to pick and choose what he wants people to know that he knows.
Finally, a satisfying end to the Overblood saga.
The fact that Hino brought us this amazing Gem as well as amazing convoluted stories such as Inazuma 11 and LBX is mind blowing. He's truly my favourite video game writer without a doubt.

I wasn't expecting Overblood 2 to be THIS insane and interesting, given the lukewarm prequel. It's a damn shame it never got released State-side.

I mean CAPCOM did utilized them from RE2 & MegaMan Legends, but slowly they kinda stopped utilizing them after Dead Rising 4.

I can't believe I just spent over 9 minutes hearing a man dissect whether the character Raz from 1998's 'Overblood 2' is the same Raz as the protagonist of 1996's 'Overblood.'
this whole video makes me think of my 6th shroom trip I experienced in Chicago back in march. it was a horrifying experience being in public tripping on drugs, but in the end, I was very enlightened.
