Agree completely. This rule applies to cars/trucks too. Every time I have walked away from the deal they have come back with a better deal, doesn’t mean I took it cause it still might not be right, but don’t let them force you into a deal that’s not good for you.

Fantastic review. I've bought and sold over 50-60 cars/trucks/MCs in my life and when I finally, about 25 years ago, settled on the concept of win-win, both buyer-seller happy, my own happiness increased much. It came about by studying Stoicism. Realizing that I can't read someone's mind so don't presume to know motive. Simply be fair for my own good. Life is so much simpler.

Road out to a honda dealership in springfield, MO last night to get a trade value and check out the used bike they had, which was a good deal - turns out they have all the used bikes sitting out in an open awning and they are filthy.
Then we start talking prices and the same guy who told me the listed price was the OTD price, tells me that there are some fees for them having *checked*(rather than changed) the fluids and chain when it rolled into the dealership months ago. They wanted another $160 just to check, NOT CHANGE, the fluids. Then they wanted a "maintenance fee" of $200 for keeping it clean. I guess water spots, crusty dirt and gummed up chain is the new definition of clean.
They wanted to value my bike for $1500 under the NADA low value that they claimed they went by on their website and reviews. I physically laughed out loud and left. What a joke. 260 mile trip for a bunch of BS, will never do it again. Froze my ass off during that ride, so I learned multiple lessons. Thanks, Honda of the Ozarks!

I have purchased two more Harleys since then. I will never by from anyone else. They made a fair profit and earned a customer for life. Very smart business plan.

4:25 In a private party sale, it makes a lot of sense to ask for a completely firm price, and it makes a ton of sense as a buyer to pay that completely firm price, if everyone's asking $5,000 for a bike, it's really worth $4,600, and that "firm" price you found is for $4,400. That firm price is discounted a couple percent below market value without you even having to ask for it because the seller just happens to be a very fair person who doesn't want to field phone calls for 3 weeks. Firm deals are in many cases, the most fair deals you can find. You just need to make sure you know market value.

I rarely pay what a seller is asking, but I have never left someone feeling like they shouldn't have sold it to me. There's a point where I save as much as I can, but when you can see the seller starting to get to the point of just telling you to leave, you're probably going past the good deal point to "Get the heck of my property!" Haha. Good points.

Only other advice I’ve learnt over the years is that we generally don’t wake up in the morning and say ‘I’m gonna trade my bike today’. Normally we know in a little while we’ll be trading and start looking around. Keep an eye on the bikes that aren’t moving. Then when you’re ready you’ve got an instant hit list of bikes that have been sitting at a dealer a couple of months.
It’s hit and miss. Generally I find 2/3 times it’s because the photos are overly flattering and they’ve had months of people rocking up and thinking ‘oh.’, but about a third of the time the ad’s as accurate as any other and it’s a good place to start.
But as the video says don’t be a dick & rock up like ‘I know you can’t sell this bike, so you’ll sell it to me for half’, be nice, polite have a chat about the bike, and make them an offer.
As is always the way, if they say no, just walk. If you’re too invested in a bike you haven’t bought yet yoy’re Not getting a good deal. Bikes are mass produced and most models you have a lot of options. If the dealer will cut a deal, take it, if not, try to understand why and try somewhere else so long as the reason isn’t ‘my expectations are ludicrous’
Great vid though. TBH one of the reasons 80% of my bikes have come from dealers is that it’s usually easy to find a dealer that will deal whilst private sellers are more often a total PITA.

Most Harley Dlrs want full MSRP, freight & anywhere from $999 - $2100 Mark up or dealer prep. (same thing) here in So Cal. They will negotiate some, but want to hit home run with every sale. I've bought 3 new HD's but went out of state to smaller dealers for more reasonable deals on 2 of 3 bikes. I understand how HD sales are dropping year after year. Other factors like, aging demographic and millennials not buying cruisers factor in. I've always had more pleasurable experience buying Japanese bikes with discounts off MSRP, no freight or set up.

Typically actually buying the bike or car, especially at a dealership, takes all the fun out of a normally exciting, happy experience. So many salespeople are slime balls. You seem like a good person to buy through. I am older and have purchased a few cars and bikes. My technique is to receive an out the door price over the phone. I want to be in and out of the dealership in 30 minutes not 3 hours. Start all the paperwork so all you need is a signature. I usually pay cash or have financing from somewhere else to speed the process. Glad to hear your sales people do not work on commissions. Some larger dealerships are switching over to that model to make purchasing faster and a good experience.

99.99% of Dealerships won't give you what Bluebook value is for your trade in and that's what gets my goat. I left a place once due to being low balled by $500 less than what the Bluebook value was. I mean, why bother even having a Bluebook value on ANYTHING if it's not adhered to? I ended up getting my trade in value met AND got a better deal on the bike I wanted at another dealership. Bottom line, if you're not satisfied and the dealership isnt willing to work with you GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!

I agree, if it is a used bike, telling the salesman/seller that there is another bike at another dealership that is less money has zeeeero bearing on the bike in front of you. However, if it is a New bike and you have an actual WRITTEN Agreement, then that is a completely different story, and you can show the current salesman/manager the WRITTEN Agreement and make a better deal for yourself, if there is any more room in the deal and they want to actually take that deal.

I would have to agree with a lot of what you said. However if I am buying from a dealer I have no intentions of ever working with again (distance from me etc). I am not horribly worried about the sales staffs feelings. I am more interested in best price possible. Private sales I totally agree because they may buy from you down the road or may turn you to a deal you wouldn’t know about otherwise etc. if a dealer is honest upfront and doesn’t try to dazzle me with total bs and does right by me then I will go back repeatedly. Trust is a huge thing with me. I bought a truck that ended up having pretty major issues my mechanic found. Brought it back and the dealership apologized it even took longer than they thought to fix it but made sure everything was perfect before they gave it back. They now have a repeat customer. Not just me. My wife, son and 3 daughters as well.

Road a Goldwing and it was easier on the back. I love to ride, but can’t ride this Harley. I’ll bring it to you.

I'll add a copy/paste of a question/comment I shared on Sean's 6 dealership things to watch out for, circa 2018. Thought I'd ask over here......"Old video, I know. However, question is....with new or used bike, is cash still king? I'm fortunate to not have to finance (anymore!). With vehicles, cash is no longer king, they WANT you to finance so they can get more outta you with finance charges. Appreciate any response! Thanks for all your videos, Sean!"

Always get delivery discounted, it’s their cost of doing business not mine. And if not the color or options looking for but can add later, deduct that. Compare other dealerships wishing 100miles. I know about bikes, but called 5 dealerships for Subaru Outback around me, the furthest one gave best price, took my lease off my hands with no hassle and brought to car to me. That’s was outstanding buying experience

problem with this advice, it's all good, but it assumes the dealership/sales know what they are doing. I was looking to buy a specific Triumph model, but not a specific year, or whether a show room, or used version. There was 3 at the dealership, with prices all over the place. I called ahead, set-up a test ride, new the prices ahead, but confused as to why the used '17 version was priced higher than the 'new 18 model, while the '19 model had a dealer incentive. The sales person had no idea of any of it. What I wanted to be maybe an hour or two to figure out the best deal, this bloke wasted an hour of time to come back with MSRP prices that were not even from the website. I said, no way am I gonna waste a saturday while you figure out what serial numbers are worth whatever. Told him to email prices. He followed up with a text message if I was still interested. no prices, no specifics. fack you.

Great advice. We are likeminded in this respect. Always best to seek a win win for buyer and seller. Creates an opportunity for future transactions and or referrals from the dealer side. And feel good/good will on the private party side.

Great Stuff! I'd like to know how you actually research bikes too. I'm a huge Goldwing fan. All Years. 1985 1200 Interstate is my current steed. Where do you get your data? Maintenance issues per year and model, etc, etc,. I'd enjoy the research but other than cycle mag reviews online I really am clueless on how to get the data. I would truly love to drive/fly in with my wife and ride it back to Colorado Springs. All the best my friend. J.R.

At the dealerships, should you always negotiate out the door total numbers or just price numbers? I know some dealerships add on extra random fees

    • @hellraiserrec19
      @hellraiserrec19 Před 6 měsíci

Personally, I always look at out the door cost. At the end of the day the out the door price is what you are paying or financing. How they get to the number is irrelevant

My main gripe with dealerships are bait and switch tactics. I typically email or call dealerships first prior to driving 50 plus miles and ask about specific bikes and ask if there is any room for negotiation on the price. If they say yes then if I go there they better be willing to wiggle. However some dealerships I've found bait you in and the say we wont budge (Cough BMW Motorcycles of Long Beach cough)

A dealer in Las Vegas advertised a new bike for a grand under what list price had been plus dealer costs, ($3,599 for a Yamaha TW200). I called and said I am an hour away so before I drive for two hours there and back, I want to know the out the door price. It was $5,600. A $2,000 mark up. I saved myself a two hour drive. Now I know the price still wasn't bad, but it upset me that they would bait me with an artificially low list price.
