NATO's Lithuanian border with Russia where Ukraine war Z sign taunts West

  • EVERY morning the residents of this tiny border town wake up to the chilling knowledge that they are separated from Russia by just a 200-metre bridge.
They live in fear as a giant painted "Z" - the symbol of Vladimir Putin's twisted war in Ukraine - leers at them from across the Nemunas River.
And they tremble at the thought that one day their bridge will see tanks and soldiers streaming across - just like what happened last year in Ukraine.
It is by strange quirks of geography and diplomacy as they find themselves a stone's throw with Russia's Kaliningrad.
Kaliningrad is an isolated stretch of land cut off from Russia and left sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania.
The region is heavily militarised, at its peak being home to more than 200,000 Russian soldiers.
And so The Sun Online headed to the Lithuanian border town of Panemune - which has a population of less than 200.

In any case, Tilsit was pretty much depopulated as a result of WW2(59k in 1939, 6.5k in 1946), and since it was given to RSFSR, thats the primary source of the repopulation of the city. To have baltic sea under NATO control. The Baltic states unfortunelly are too small and to weak to exist there while being neutral. They have only 2 options: to be with us or to be against us
I guess they had no problem to make the right and obvious choice. Also from the NATO point of view - what is better for NATO : having ths baltic states with us or against us? Once more the choice is obvious. Basically creating NATO was to give the smaller and weaker countries of Europe an opportunity to defend themselves from any USSR, now Russia's agression which obviously those countries would not achieve alone. Anyone wonder why all those countries want to join NATO?
Unfortunelly Ukrainians comes a bit too late with this decision and now they have to suffer. I guess that few years after the fall of ussr was the very best time for them to make it easily. Russia was such a mess in that time and had less ability to protect their interests. Truth is the Ukraine is very vital for their own defence capabilities and they neber wont let Ukraine to exist as a fully independent country.

Russians also use a "V" as a war symbol. But Lithuania could copy the poster that the Estonians put up in Narva

@@rexyhasfallen1737 good, Russia has connected a land bridge to crimea, and has reduced Ukraine coastline significantly, all the whole defeating the western aid to Ukraine. Ukraine only wins when they can cut off supplied or habe a 5:1 advantage. Even with all the aid in the world they couldn’t even break through the first considerable line of defense.
