- "I Saw Three Ships" is an English Christmas carol, listed as number 700 in the Roud Folk Song Index. The earliest printed version of "I Saw Three Ships" is from the 17th century, possibly Derbyshire, and was also published by William Sandys in 1833. The song was probably traditionally known as "As I Sat On a Sunny Bank" and was particularly popular in Cornwall.
I call this " couch composing" ; in other words, I sat on my couch with the laptop and arranged it in Musecore without the aid of my piano which I always refer to when composing, even instrumentals. It was a fun project and I kept it short just like the Christmas carol without too much extra melody or motifs, but layering and overlapping the melody line for a canonic effect. I hope you enjoy. I have the sheet music but will wait to see if there is interest before uploading through Arrange Me.
Instruments for the arrangement are: Flute, Clarinet, Guitar, Bass Drum Woodblocks, Chimes, Tambourine, Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello
The lyrics mention the ships sailing into Bethlehem, but the nearest body of water is the Dead Sea about 20 miles (32 km) away. The reference to three ships is thought to originate in the three ships that bore the purported relics of the Biblical magi to Cologne Cathedral in the 12th century. Another possible reference is to Wenceslaus II, King of Bohemia, who bore a coat of arms "Azure three galleys argent". Another suggestion is that the ships are actually the camels used by the Magi, as camels are frequently referred to as "ships of the desert". Wikipedia source

Yes, it is a bit Hobbity and very much a dance in this arrangement. Glad you enjoyed it, Chris! 🚤
I like the idea that the three ships symbolize three camels with the three kings. Your video with this composition is wonderfully successful. I wish you a continued wonderful Christmas season, dear Donna🎄🎄❣❣
I did not know that about what the ships symbolize until I did some research. Very nice analogy for that as I always wondered wondered what the song symbolized for Christmas, Thank you for your interest, dear Silvi!
Very beautiful, Donna!!
Thanks so much, Stefan! ❤️
What a lovely arrangement!! Sounds so Irish 😁
Thank you dear, Cornelia! I was going for a Celtic or Irish vibe so I am glad you piked up on that. 🚢⚓
Love the thought of cozy 'couch composing' - what a cheerful arrangement and beautifully chosen visual image too.
Yes, I like this kind of arranging while relaxing a bit because I don't have to sit at the keys to do it which is very tiring after a while with my setup for keys and computer. Thank you for watching, Amie!
Yes, so wise. It really does add a lot of physical output when so prolific at the keys and with that computer work. I am feeling a little editing strain in my hands, so had to re-do my set up a little bit in caution! @@dmstudiosheetmusic9082
I recently made some changes because of neck and back strain. I had to constantly move my position to use the laptop and then keys to input with the mouse, I moved to a different room and set up a table behind the keyboard to set my laptop on but it still gets very tiring after a few hours. @@motiftheory
Oh yes, I hope you can take care. It's very demanding work and you've been so prolific. @@dmstudiosheetmusic9082
