It appears that Conestoga college has relegated this program to be done at their Milton campus instead of their Doon campus, at least for international students acceptances.
While trying to apply for the program via the OCAS portal (what you have to do as an international student), the Doon campus option is indicated as CLOSED, only the Milton campus option is available. This is true for the upcoming Jan and May 2024 intakes.
This presents a problem for international students in particular, because Milton is a very new campus, there is very few infrastructure and amenities around. Finding appropriate, affordable housing in the area, having access to amenities like supermarkets poses a huge challenge.
The other Conestoga campuses are too far away to commute, so it is not feasible for you stay at a Conestoga residence. The Milton campus being that new and all, you dun expect there to be connecting shuttle buses between Milton and the other campuses at this point. So although international students could technically get a placement here, but you are pretty much stuck in limbo unless you drive. If you need to rely on pubic transport, you are screwed.
With that retrospect, I have decided not to go for this program and opt for other alternatives, simply because it is not conducive for international students.
Unless Conestoga wise up and open their Doon campus placements to international students, anybody who wants to apply for this program, you had better wait until the Milton campus infrastructures come up to speed before doing so.

Hi, Tim! I’m an international student from China, planning to apply for this program. I have a question about career prospects. One thing I’ve noticed is that there is no co-op in this program, which I assume would be a vital part for gaining hands on experience for a beginner. As an international student, I may worry about that I couldn’t find my first job in Canada, as I have no local working experience. What’s is your opinion in terms of co-op? I’m looking forward to your reply! Thank u so much.

Hey Lingman! You've definitely identified a weak spot of the program - there's no co-op option. Frankly, Conestoga and other schools do a poor job of *actually* preparing you for a job and getting you out there, so you do have to hustle! That said, as an instructor I can give you this tip: impress your instructors, and they'll really help you find a job. I know I've done this, and know other instructors do too. Hope this helps!

@@timcampbellsms I intend to do this as my 2nd program in Canada, after finishing a Marketing Management program first, and similar to the gentleman above, I do have concerns about getting a job after this.
Because my first program does not have an co-op work option as well, and I intend to move to another province after graduating (because for PR options as I am not so young anymore), what advice can you give for my situation?
Are your instructors able to help you get a job at another province?
By the way, do you think this program will be good for those who intend to explore remote work as a digital nomad?

I’m planning to take up Strategic Marketing Communications at Conestoga. Any thoughts on the program? I heard Conestoga’s Marketing program is the best in Ontario.

I'm curious where you heard it's "the best" as I definitely would not agree. According to Hot Courses Abroad, top schools would be George Brown College, Seneca and Fanshawe (all of which I would agree with).
I'm not terribly familiar with the program, so I can't comment too much on it. I do see it's considered a two-year post-grad program which typically appeals to international students, is academically rigorous in terms of assignments, and instructors are more likely to be part time while working in the field or semi-retired.
For all marketing programs, I always recommend trying for a school with a co-op where possible.

    I have 2 questions
    Does this program have maths?
Can anyone from a non social media background cope up with this program?

    • @timcampbellsms
      @timcampbellsms  Před rokem +1

      Good questions!
At the time of recording and this comment, no, math is not really used at all in the program.
I think you could tackle this without a social media background, but applicants should know at least some core principles of marketing, and/or have experience in marketing. Without that, it'll be like trying to learn a new, applied, social science out of nowhere (which could prove difficult).
      Thanks for your questions!

Actually, I am confused between this program and Niagara college's Social Media Management Program. And I don't want super intense program so that I can gradually fit into the Canadian education system.
By the way, I have done BA in Media Studies.@@timcampbellsms
