Here’s how I always remember the tails and types of dove. White wings have an obvious white patch on the side of each wing. A mourning dove has a pointed tail in flight. Remember that if it pokes your eye out, you’ll be in “Mourning.” Everything else is a Eurasian (squared tail and light desert tan colored feathers with a black ring around the top of the neck. Although good luck seeing that last part in flight). There’s also small turtle doves, but they’re tiny and I do believe their illegal to shoot. I see them in Yuma on occasion. I never shoot them anyway. So that’s how I always remembered my dove species since I was 12. I’m now 55.

Dude, I am so jealous. I finally got 3 doves down. But had to see them sitting in a tree, then take off to identify them before I shot. I struggle so hard with identifying them. Not just them but ducks as well. I went goose hunting today and teal are in season. I saw a bunch of ducks I thought were teal but didn't take the shot because I wasn't sure. Wish i had an experienced friend to help me and show me the ropes. I don't know anyone who duck hunts. I live in indiana and it's not as popular here as it is in other states. I'll figure it out one day. Just a long learning curve for me. Makes me mad (and motivated) to try and do better identifying them. Awesome video man! Keep up the good content! You'll always get likes from me lol

I am in Minnesota, sounds like you're close by me. I am in the same boat. I just shot my first bird today, a dove. I have been out searching for ducks, geese, and doves everyday. I just started hunting this season, but I am thankful to have some very knowledgable family members to ask advice from. I have had a really hard time identifying birds too, and I want to be as ethical as possible. Good luck to you, I am sure we will figure it out with time.

Definitely take advantage of the opportunity to learn from your family whonare knowledgeable! Happy hunting 👊

    Get a shaver!
The most heart-warming thing about hunting doves and other game with a gun is having a well-trained, loyal and loving K9 companion afield. The hunting dog is important for the conservation of game and the dog can even let you know if birds are coming in case you did not see them of hear them yourself. I am troubled by all these dove hunting videos I see this day and age without the employment or retrieving dogs afield.
About 33% of shot doves are never recovered. Humans do not have a dog's keen senses to find birds in cover. There is a serious waste problem. Dogs solve this problem for the most part.
I like the notion of hunting with dogs for just old-fashioned charm. No, I don't want to spend time and energy combing through a sunflower or corn field for one or more dropped birds. There might be snakes hiding out there. The only "boy" I might have is a male Lab or golden. A retriever, K9 type, can also swim. Doves popped on the wing can and do fall into watering holes.
Poison ivy....another good reason for a K9 in the dove field!
