Richard, I did exactly what you said on the video. Everything went smoothly, but when I popped the battery in and squeezed the trigger, I heard a pop. Looks like I fried the board. I checked and I don't think I crossed the wires--I had the red on the left and the black on the right. What gives? Is it toast or is the board replaceable? Thanks.

I am a 73 year old woman who successfully fixed the trigger on my vacuum thanks to your video! Those who are attempting to accomplish this task make sure you have a thin torx T8 screwdriver before starting. Look for one like Richard uses in the video. The first one I bought had a sleeve too large to fit in one of the areas so I had to buy another one. I can't thank you enough for the excellent video!!

@@mrrestrepo6812 T8 screwdrivers are specialized tools that are used mainly for electrical / computer work. The tip of the screwdriver looks like a multi pointed star. Look on ebay there are plenty there at cheap prices. Buy a kit with varying sizes as you never know when you might need them again. Go for the longer 100 ml length ones or longer (you may find that an extender bar may be useful) so you can get to the screw down the handle

Richard you are the best! I had a broken trigger on my Dyson V 11 that was just out of warranty. The only Dyson Center in downstate New York had a three month lag time just to see the machine and never answered my phone calls. The two vacuum cleaner repair centers in my neighborhood said they couldn’t touch the Dyson out of warranty. Outrageous for Dyson to leave you no real options. To the point, I am a 71 year old woman who has never ever ever fixed anything and thanks to your video and the instructions on tools etc. I fix that Dyson trigger! It did take me 3 1/2 hours instead of 17 minutes….but I so appreciate you doing this work. Thank you!

This was awesome - thank you. $8 replacement trigger on Amazon and 45 mins of my time to repair a V10 animal. BTW if anyone is watching this and when you pull the trigger after re-assempling and the battery just flashes once and it won't start, check that the small white lead is properly connected. Its easy taking it off, but not as obvious how to get it properly re-seated.

An absolutely brilliant “how to” video to enable me to fix a friend’s “V11 absolute” including the little problems that might be encountered during disassembly and assembly. One point that I can possibly give a useful comment on is that I didn’t have a long shafted Torx T8 driver, but made do with a little Torx driver that was included in a sat nav battery replacement kit which would comfortably fit down the long trigger grip handle. This tool wasn’t quite long enough but had a useful hex shape at the far end of the handle that fitted into a 9/32” socket - job done!!!
Thanks once again for giving us amateur menders the knowledge to accomplish this repair job.

Thank you so much for this Richard. I was about to throw my defunct Dyson V11 out. It had been cutting out sporadically for ages and finally gave up the ghost. I had suspected it was a trigger problem but couldn't face getting it to a repair shop. I decided to take a look online to see if I could fix it myself. Encouraged by Gayle Insler's comment here recently, I went for it, bought a T8 screwdriver and got stuck in. Husband only interfered a little bit, lol! I'm coming up to 68 and never repaired anything either, so feel absolutely chuffed to bits that I now have a working machine. Great stuff! P.S. It took me several hours too, over a a couple of days, but so worth it. Thank you again!

On my particular V11, I removed the white plastic cover to find that the circuit board had a thick coating of clear silicone on it. I was able to carefully chip away at the silicone to expose the terminals/wires and complete the repair, but it's something to keep in mind. You have to be careful when removing the silicone to not damage the wires, and make sure that the metal terminals and connector are left spotless before re-assembly to get good electrical contact, but it was manageable.
Either way, great video! Thank you!

I think CZcams has been a boon to do-it-yourselfers. It's saved me thousands of dollars in repair costs over the years, from replacing the capacitor in my AC unit to changing the broken trigger switch in my Dyson vacuum. That said, there are a lot of so-called experts on CZcams who waste your time because I suppose they like to hear themselves talk. Well , Richar's Vacuum Center, your delivery is perfect. One, you know what you're talking about, two, you didn't waste time with a 10 minute intro and finally the content was perfect, nothing omitted and no extraneous BS. If you ever get bored with vacuums, you can put together some CZcams workshops for those verbose CZcams people who waste 60 minutes of your life when 10 would have been just right. Great job dude! By the way, I never ever comment on CZcams videos. Yours was worth it.

Excellent video. My V11 was only a few weeks out of warranty when the trigger failed. After many calls to Dyson due to failed promises of a callback they finally directed me to an electrical services company that would fix it for £79! These plastic triggers are all over the internet (as this is a common problem) and probably only cost a few pence to make. I got one for a few quid and thanks to your excellent helpful video was able to change the trigger relatively easily and quickly. Thanks for saving me money and the hassle of waiting for someone else to fit this job in.
I'm extremely disappointed with Dyson. Any other "reputable" company with a known component failure would instigate a product recall. Or at least be more helpful to its customers.

The only thing that you need to make sure you do is keep track of your screws and which ones go where. You can kind of see some places when he's putting them back in. And you should be able to remember. But if you're super detail-oriented you might want to mark them. I used a magnetic cup to keep track of all of them. Thanks again!

I know this is an old video, but I'm very happy to have found it. My four-year-old Dyson just quit working, and when I took it in to see if it could be repaired, was told it was the trigger, but the part was probably no longer available and/or if it was, it would take a very long time for the repair shop to get it in. They suggested I buy a new vacuum cleaner from them to the tune of $700! I immediately did an internet search on my own for the part and then stumbled on this video. After watching it, I ordered the part (it included the thin torx T8 screwdriver), had it within two days, followed this excellent step-by-step video, and within about an hour had my vacuum cleaner repaired! This video saved me from buying a new vacuum cleaner, and all for less than $14.00!

Many many thanks. Very easy to follow and the only cost from my local tool shop was the TX8 screwdriver at €5. Followed every part of the video. Done in less than one hour.

Thank you, Richard! Your precise and educational explanation of this repair is excellent. My wife says she never gets anything new because I always fix the old stuff, and she is correct. I guess growing up and taking things apart has paid off.
    Keep up the good videos.

Thank you so much for posting this. I just followed your instructions to replace the trigger on my unit and it's working like a charm! Way to go. I also had to buy a torx kit to take out some of the screws, and when it came to the last screw the extender with the kit was too wide to reach it! Fortunately, hardware store #3 had a long T-8 torx driver and I was able to complete the job.

Just WOW!! My husband and I were a bit concerned about trying this ourselves but with this video, the correct tools and patience, we managed to get our V11 absolute Extra working again. That long T8 Torx driver is a must have or buy! The cost of the new trigger and T8 driver was £18.98, so much cheaper than an engineer or buying the full unit. Have to say that it was also a bit of fun to do and educational at the same time.
Can’t thank you enough for this video Richard

Thank you so much! Nice to have a guide like you on this adventure. Fixed it :) The most thrilling part was to see if my T8 Torx Allen key was long enough to fit in that last handle screw. Thankfully it just was.

Can’t believe it, I fixed it yesterday thanks to your help. Took just two trips to both Home Depot and Lowes to find a T8, breathing in tons of micro fine dust powder and about 2 frustrating hours to get some of the screws off. But I did it!!! I was so sure that I would never get this thing to work again so I ordered a new Dyson because I can’t live without it and when it actually started up again after reassembling it back together again I felt an overwhelming warm fussy feeling of bonus!!! Granted, I mysteriously have two screws left over and it kind of makes a faint whistles noise when on, but it works! That’s all that matters to me. Thank you for this video.

Worked perfectly on my V8. The most difficult part was bending the two big wires back to their original position at 12:43 . Fantastic step by step tutorial. Thanks a lot!

Thanks! I hope the glue holds for you! In the past I have attempted to glue parts like that but I've found there isn't enough surface area to get a strong enough bond so it just ended up failing again in the same spot. But I could be wrong.

Excellent video! My vacuum is working great again! It totally sucks! 😝
Great step by step, commentary and tips. I was thankful I found all the tools I needed for this job at home!
I would have had extra screws at the end if it weren't for you!
Hemostats (surgical tools) helped push/pull the bent wires through tight spots so I didn't have to straighten them.
    Thank you!
