Cooling the Door Prior to Entry?

  • In our curriculum, we teach a concept where we cool the door prior to opening. This is a technique similar to 3-D'ing the door as they do overseas. The difference in our technique is we are doing this solely for gas cooling.
When firefighters prepare to make entry, they need to be fully dressed (mask on, gloves, and a charged hose line). However, the majority of us were taught to check out nozzle patter and bleed the air in the line. Where do most of us put that water?
    In the grass?
    Where is the fire?
    Where are we going?
What should a highly skilled firefighter do upon opening a door?
They should look for Life, Fire, and Layout.
If we do not cool the overhead of the porch we are standing on and the doorway, we can expect hot gases and possible fire to exit the door. If we cool those areas, we can buy back time for that quick look or assessment.
Check out the video demonstration with the Max Fire Box.

Greeting from oversea, thank you for your video. Are you able to explain why it works like that? So in theory you do a 'surface-cooling' around the door which doesnt affect the fire room itself behind but once the door is open the hot smoke exits on the door frame which is now on a smaller temperature and because of this it needs more time to reach the (re-)igniion temperature again?

Hello, this concept is very common overseas in CFBT training where they 3 D the door. They cool the gases outside the door and inside the door to prevent the initial entry area.

I recently saw a little bit more on the "breathing in the door" technique. Do you have another video that expands on that? I thought you guys made it.

We have numerous videos on our channel demonstrating cooling the door prior to entry. This concept was introduced by firefighters overseas. It is called "3-D'ing the door". This article explains it briefly. It is merely a technique used to decay or inert fire gases briefly as the door is opened to limit or prevent immediate fire growth.cfbt-us.com/wordpress/?tag=3d-firefighting&paged=2#:~:text=Control%20the%20Door%3A%20If%20the,you%20maintain%20control%20of%20it.
