The ancient religion of the Garos is Songsarek. According to historians, this Songsarek religion of Garo is older than Christianity and Islam, religions of the world's majority. According to many, it is traditional or contemporary of Hinduism; therefore, Major A. Playfair in hisbook ‘The Garos’ mentions that this cultural religion, like Hinduism, also believes in Animism. That is, the word songsarak means faith in many Gods and sub-Gods.
Garo tribals are animist. Before converting to Christianity, the name of the ancient religion of the Garos was Songsarek. This Songsarek Garo tribals were animist. Like other religions, there is no proof or scripture of this Songsarek religion. From time immemorial, this religion has survived little to this day through word of mouth and practice of righteousness. It shall be noted that there are about 7,000 Gods and deities in the Songsarek religion of the ancient religion of the Garos. According to the Songsarek religion, they worship the sky, the wind, the sun, the moon and the stars, worship ancestral house, worship the harvest, worship the poles of the house.
