In this week's National Interest, Shekhar Gupta explains why India's new era of clear debate on economic policies - PM Modi swerving Right with his unabashed pitch for the private sector, and Rahul Gandhi moving Left by accusing the government of crony capitalism - is a good thing.

There are 2 major flaws in, or say arguments against, your well known position on privatization:
      1) Ownership - it's not just Adani/Ambani who would be the problems. The moneybag financiers behind them would totally run with it. Nobody would know whether the money came from CCP, or Jews, or Sheikhs. Worse, would it come via electoral bond route or Hawala or some RSS facilitated mediation? Would there be a limit to such ownership? Wouldn't there be cartelization? What's the guarantee that CCP would not own every farm of India, that Jews would not own every business of India, that Sheikhs would not make our cities their brothels, that Indian Brahmin-Baniya class (not casteist, but the class who does that) would not be their enablers? Half of Paris apartments are owned/leased by Sheikhs where they keep their model "friends".
      2) People becoming robots, just an ID - for example, America is not the tall skyscrappers. It's the vast majority of poor people who are mistreated so badly day-in and day-out, at work, outside work, on the streets, by the police, in the courts, and even at homes. Because the system itself is sold out and corrupt to the core. Only those who make compromises would flourish. There would be so many "laws" against even basic things like walking on the streets, that everyone would be in violation of something, and then would be forced to go through the corrupt system. Trying to avoid it means working FOR strengthening the system. So that the sucking gets harder the next day. It is an Ajgar like Kundli (python trap) that gets tighter and tighter around you with each passing moment until the sweet release of death, which too is heavily commercialized phenomena.
Taken together, these 2 tenets of crony capitalism take you towards the even worse "caste" system, where the powerful declare themselves as higher caste, and others' lives are there just to facilitate the so-called "elite". They'd write books, make religions etc. to support their superiority claims. And their wealth/connections would be passed on to their chosen heirs. However, the same so-called elite would never go fight a war that would inevitably be brought upon by their ineptitude and corruption and power-thirst. In fact, they would be the first one to ally or make arrangements with a foreign power. Because their idea is to enjoy power at the expense of others, make "laws" and "rules" that pay for the life of the elite and serve their corrupt lifestyle. It is already happening in America, where many whites think they are higher caste and mislead the poor; whereas equally corrupt rich liberals from the left exploit the poor. Only centrists fight to keep the country going.
I am at the Center - neither right, nor left, leaning towards none. I was writing all this even in the 90's. It's just that I have lived around, read, traveled, mingled, and seen all of this playing out in real life since then. I have said it before, and I would say it again - the purpose of career or politics shouldn't be to become the elite, join the elite, or at least be accepted by the elite. The purpose of career or politics should be to destroy the elite system and make the world equal for every newborn child.

I have seen so many people bashing each other in the comment section, and it seems that some people don't even have a good understanding of how the economy works based on their claims. So as an econ student, I would like to a give my best to make you people understand how an economy grows and what are the advantages and disadvantages of capitalism and socialism.
So what causes economy to grow?
Economic growth if there is no debt or foreign inflows/outflows of money is involved, entirely depends on productivity growth, how much the productive output grows of an economy, that much overall growth will occur. How does so? Let me make you understand with a simple example, suppose in a country 100rs of goods is produced for 100rs of demand, now let's say if the production grows to 200rs worth of current value, then what will happen? It will cause prices to go down by 50% (demand and supply), so you may ask where is the growth? Where is more money? Now see as the cost of things have halved, people's spending power has doubled with the same money so with increasing the money supply by printing more money to accommodate for it, we will see incomes rise. Now it's obviously not as simple as that, if there will be no debt or foreign involvement, no one will have the resources to invest to increase production by that much at the first place, so this "Natural growth" would be VERY slow, expect growth rate of around 0.5% to 1% on the most optimistic side. So, as we can conclude, we need some sort of money FIRST to stimulate growth, it can either be foreign inflows (investments, exports, etc) or debt(loan). And with the money we can increase output either with a "pull" or a "push", now with a pull, we are pulling businesses to increase production by increasing the demand directly by putting this money on the hands of the consumer. Now let's say a person takes a loan to buy a new laptop, so now this money will go into the economy and create demand for more goods to be produced hence increasing output and grow. It's positive is that it is very easy to execute at any given time but it has it's negatives too,as using debt creates cycles, it means current boosted growth comes at a cost of reduced spending somewhere in the future that's why you see most domestic demand lead economies like US or the Europe getting themselves in a recession every 10 year or so. Another drawback is the if too much debt is taken, the market may not be able to keep up with this surge in demand causing prices to shot up(demand and supply). The other method is "push", here we are pushing businesses to take loans to invest and expand there businesses.(now it's great as here the debt isn't being used just for consumption but to build productive assets that will enable businesses to produce more long after the loan is paid back) It's draw back is that it takes sometime for the money in the economy to circulate to create consumer demand so here we can use the increased output to export our products to rapidly bring in money in the economy to grow it in miraculous speeds.
Now as socialism is more focused on making sure "Whatever we have is distributed equally amongst everyone", they often fail to make more money and increase outout hence is typically slower for growth while capitalism because of it's competitive nature pretty is pretty much about "who can produce and fulfill consumers demands most efficiently gets it all". So is capitalism superior? At least according to me it is but again without proper competition in capitalism and without transparency in socialism, both ideology tends to produce the exact opposite results as intended. It is natural to have high inequality in capitalism but it's only a big problem when is managed poorly and in our "IT IS MANAGED POORLY".
I hope you are now clear about it.😊

This is one good topic that you have taken today, I wish I could have seen this 20 years back.
I asked my father when I was 15 years, old that why am I always compared with a better scoring person in the class? and why in financial situations we always compare our selves with the poor? with that logic, should we not compare ourselves with the rich? This is truly a doubt in my mind at that age. My father never replied to it. My doubts surrounding this grew, I saw poverty and poor people glorified in movies and the rich always cunning and corrupt. we were middle class and I truly believed thats how rich people would behave. But why do we pray to God saraswati for money? In my late 20's when I was old enough to understand I understood
The hypocrisy of people around me.
    The glorification of the poor,
    Bashing of the rich and
Secretly we all desire to be the rich.
This opened my eyes, I was never a materialist person, luckily god has placed me in a good position. Even though I am not one, I admire and respect all the people who wants to earn more money and hence uplift others. Even our religion teaches us to excel in everything including wealth.

The whole matter is “Elementary Mr. Watson!”
Wealth has to be created before it can be distributed. Government can’t create wealth for distribution. E.g. In Pakistan wealth is “created” mostly by the Army. We know how it is there. China gave up socialism to embrace capitalism and privatization. Russia too has embraced privatization.
Cuba (have you heard of this country?) of course follows total socialism.
Only an efficient and free private sector can create wealth which can be “distributed” to others if necessary. Only private sector can create the required number of jobs.
OK. Areas like space and nuclear can’t yet be privatized in India, though these sectors also have been privatized in some other countries.
Just imagine…If the IT sector in India were to be with the Public sector!!!!!

I was eagerly waiting for your take on this issue. Anyways, it's great to see that Indian politics is now heading towards a true left and right divide.

Yes. Dr. JP is an honest politician. Always thinks about good for the people and country. Speaks in his senses and not swing with the mob. He is absolute liberal patriot. Has strong belief in culture, quality over quantity, merit over loud noises. Not casteist, communist, communalist, conservationalist, regionalist, oppurtunist. Believer in creation of wealth.

Unfortunately I could not find much press coverage except in Telegu press. Wish more English or Hindi media cover him. I am sure a larger chunk of young voter would be his demographic.
