Not really surprising. The vid made it sound like his going to Sweden was due to a girl. Neneh was born in Sweden and Don lived there for many years. Eagle Eye had more family connections to the country.
Desireless was one of those 90’s albums where the single was polar opposite of the album as a whole. I always appreciated this one. Worried Eyes is gold.
1 hit wonder, yes. But it sounds like this guy had a ton of depth and background behind him. And in the end maybe he felt like it wasn't worth it to follow fame.
Went to see him in Murcia, Spain a few years ago and he was fantastic. The band with him were amazing. I had zero expectation going in as all I could think of was that one hit. Well, I can tell you, every song he played was better than "Save tonight". It was really good rock music. Very talented, very chilled and cool. I will definitely go see him again.
My dad actually hung out with him when he did his 2meter sessions in the Netherlands. My dad said he was genuinely a cool guy and really down to earth.
Brooo whats odd is when you posted the Lenny Kravitz video I immediately thought “man i hope he covers Eagle Eye Cherry. That Save Tonight tune was catchy” Thanks for doing this one. :)
It was a nice one-hit wonder back in the day... but ultimately an example of the type of rock music on top 40/adult contemporary in 1998 and so on... very safe sounding. I remember the constant talk about his connection to Neneh Cherry
There was so much edge and controversial music in the 90s that at that time a cool/ chill song that might qualify as a pop hit was nice to hear in the mix 👍
Remember Rolling Stone gave Pinkerton a 1 star and said it was one of the worst albums of the year and decade. Until the appreciation for the album grew too much to ignore.
He used to live in the Oxford Apartments in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. He would stop in happy hour at a restaurant called Damon's. He kept to himself and didn't talk much.
I lived with my grandmother and older cousin in the late 90s. My cousin was a DJ at the local radio station. On the weekends they would run the Rick Dee's weekly top 40s. They were all on compact disc, so after that weeks show, they would discard the CDs. My cousin started bringing them home, I would lay on the bed around 11 years old and listen to them front and back. I discovered many great songs through those CDs. Save tonight was always one of my favorites, everytime I hear the song, it takes me back to much simpler times. Thanks for the vid!!
He's a true artist, not a one-hit wonder. The way he stripped back production on that first album was golden. The songs spoke for themselves. "Lorelie' is a gem of a track.
Desireless is a mainstay in my roadtrip collection. Also his cousin Titiyo sung background on Desireless, had her own solo career which I love (kinda Sade vibes) just a super talented family.
Thanks! I'd always wondered what happened to him. Other than his sister he was kind of a mystery. Nice to know he had a career in other countries after he experienced the fickleness of the American music scene. That happens a lot here. Reminds me of the band Icehouse. They had a single big hit here with 'Electric Blue' and had 30 hits in their own country of Australia.
So I just now found out that Eagle Eye Cherry and attended the same High School in different years! I attended it between 96-00! And it was already called “Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis” High School.
Hey everyone! I wanted to start doing a weekend "Wrap Up Show" of everything I put out the past week, going over the polling results and giving you clues for the following week and highlighting some of your comments. What do you folks think and what else would you like to see on it?
Sounds like your typical everyday, going to art school, living in and moving from Stockholm to NYC and LA, with famous musician family members. Your typical everyday kind of dude that greets you with a "Namaste" and takes his shoes off before coming into your house. He'd most certainly bring a bottle of some obscure Italian wine, made from grapes nobody's ever heard of, and engage you in discussing the wonderful art of rugs for a few hours. Just your average everyday Joe Eagle Eye. VH1 legend, that in my estimation, even eclipses Shawn Mullin's "Lullaby", but not quite the level of, say, Paula Cole and her hit, "Where have all the Cowboys Gone".
In the late 90s, you were basically asking to be a one hit wonder if you were doing power pop cuz it was on its way out. There were so many of those bands back then that had one song with several months of radio play and then they'd try to promote another song and nobody cared. I'm just stating it though. I'm not saying that it's right or wrong, good or bad. Late 90s it was either about genre bending rock reggae like 311 or the slowly rising nu metal movement.
Save Tonight will always be a classic❤ still today I turn it up when it comes on. Music in America is very fickle...you could be in top one minute and down the next. I'm glad he's doing well and focusing on his family
Yeah, I remember playing this one on the Hot-AC station I was jocking at the turn of the century … always expected to hear more from him, but … His sister was also a flash in the pan.
I deleted some part of the video that went in a little more in detail about her. Frequently my original videos are way longer than what I post but I cut out stuff that feels too long
I was about to write the same then remembered how often I have looked stupid in other videos when i didn't wait to see if something obvious or well-known is mentioned. Waited and, yep, Ninah was mentioned. LOL
You missed Neneh's time with Rip Rig and Panic. She was also born in Sweden. The Cherry family relationship to Sweden ran deeper than just Eagle Eye hooking up with a Swedish girl.
5.27mins here we go, first mention of Neneh but the commentator brushes over her cred. Let's be real here, we would have never heard 'Save Tonight' or 'Steal My Kisses' if it weren't for Neneh. Also, since their Pa was famous, maybe we wouldn't have gotten to hear 'Raw Like Sushi' if it weren't for their Pa.
4:56 The way you said ‘Elvis Costello’ was bordering on disgust. It’s as if you were genuinely surprised that he was one of the influences. I think Elvis Costello is a very talented musician and certainly influential on my musical journey.

More Cherries will pop up somewhere probably😂
Not really surprising. The vid made it sound like his going to Sweden was due to a girl. Neneh was born in Sweden and Don lived there for many years. Eagle Eye had more family connections to the country.

I was stationed in Germany in the late 90s and you couldn't go anywhere during that time without hearing his music.
Same in Canada it was a huge hit here
I like that song. It's a vibe. Sorta like How Bizarre.
How bizarre is so much better makes me think of corner shop too
How Bizarre was more like the opposite of a vibe.
Desireless was one of those 90’s albums where the single was polar opposite of the album as a whole. I always appreciated this one. Worried Eyes is gold.

I've got that first album and pull it out every so often. It's a good album. I like his voice and style.
Theres no publication I take less seriously than Rolling Stone magazine. Rolling Stone wouldn't know a good album if it fell in their lap.
True.
Maybe so, but this was not a good album at all
Yep. Gave Rolling Stones - Steel Wheels 5 stars....same year as Nevemind which they gave 3 stars.

I love his sister nenah cherrys song buffalo stance
His brother Buckcherry has some decent songs too
Me too. I always thought its such a great tune. Beats walking like an Egyptian. Would definitely prefer a buffalo stance
Yeah, agreed. And she has performed with the Gorillaz, especially on "Kids With Guns". She's more influential than commercially successful.
Was she more popular over seas?
@Neelo5000 his roommates cousin Cherry&Creme has some hot tunes.

I love Save Tonight. Great song
Don Cherry was my favorite jazz trumpet player. Old and new dreams was the best band.
Eagle eye cherry is a dude not a band. Huh. The more you knows.

🙄
Technically yes but he did play with a band to perform his song's.
Never knew that either. Doesn’t help that radio at the time didn’t exactly distinguish that.
Much like Tame Impala hey
The complete opposite is bands like Jamuraqui which is actually a band not a guy
1:23 "It was at the age 14 his family would relocate to NYC", so here's a picture of Chicago. 😆
At the (1:24) mark of the video Stockholm to New York. Looks like you used a video clip of Chicago I can see the Hancock tower and Lakeshore Dr.
I came here looking for this comment. It is definitely Chicago, not NYC.
I would occasionally wonder what happen to him whenever I heard the song randomly. Thanks again bro! You never disappoint.

With Rolling Stones giving you a negative review only means you're doing it right.
Yeah it seems like if you weren't grunge you weren't shit. Some of the biggest and most replied songs of the 90s were panned by Rolling Stone.
