As a knife guy that also likes cooking, I actually got pretty enthusiastic when you answered the kitchen knife question with "spend money on fewer better knives instead" 😄 so good to see! I find there are only about five knives I use frequently, and having those in good steel + a few cheap "the good ones are all in the wash and I just need to open this packet" paring knives is totally the way to go. Plus obviously you can upgrade as you go. 100% beats buying someone else's idea of a knife block and wasting a chunk of your budget on a few you never use.

I agree with the comment about the locking mechanisms not placing your fingers in the path of the blade. I wish more makers would offer more models using those styles of locks.
There's an Altoids tin video out there that features a Mora Eldris that's been stripped of the handle and had the tang cut down a bit to fit in the tin. Pretty cool tbh. $20

The question was specifically about fixed blades for an altoids tin. Though I would certainly say you get a lot more utility per size with a folding option.
Wooden Knife blocks are typically a breeding ground for bacteria since the wood flexes and those compartments that hold the knives are nearly impossible to clean! A magnet mount is by far way more hygienic, especially in these times!
Very good advice for kitchen knives. I did ezzzactly what you recommended: 8" chef, bread, carving and paring knives do everything I need. And scissors! No knife block...they just sit on a dry cutting board or on the bench top.

I think Mercer is the best value in kitchen cutlery, specifically their Genesis line. They are made in Taiwan. Some of the models are available in short bolster versions which I prefer, though Knife Center doesn't stock them.

It's similar to "nauseating" and "nauseous" being used interchangeably. I tend to notice "addictive" being used more often for a substance and "addicting" used to describe an action. Cigarettes and coffee are addictive, but my Hogue Microflip has an addicting action. Both are technically correct adjectives though.

I want a pocket deployment knife that will be completely concealed in the pocket, I’ve thought at length about just taking the clip off an already existing pocket deploy knife, but I’d rather have a 3.5-4 inch tactical folding knife with a very short, small,deep carry, off set aftermarket pocket clip to get for it(idea is the clip keeps it in the same place in the pocket, drawing no intention to itself, and not using the clip to help draw it from the pocket) which of course needs to be pocket deployable. So ultimately I’m asking for a combo suggestion, from the ever enjoyable David c Anderson, which pocket deployment knife & aftermarket deep carry pocket clip combo can the suggest that will best hide the knife in the pocket while allowing you to deploy it using the “wave” or other deployment option
Dude I got a Malibu when they first came out lady that runs her husband's company selling knives online ordered me one straight from Dave over at protech, its over double the price on eBay but I have hung on to mine an I'm so glad! I love it! It is probably my favorite knife its between the Malibu or the magic whiskers hidden boaster release auto of course both are protech. PT is the absolute best production knife out there I swear by it!
Great FAQ, you did a super job with the kitchen knife set up. I retrained by going to culinary school after OTJ firefighting injuries. I've bought a lot of kitchen/restaurant knives and those were very usable suggestions that would work really well. Could even tournee some potatoes and carrots with that lil veggie knife. ;) I really need to focus and buy one of the Hogue Deka's one of these days. So many knives, so little time. lol

Although, this is an older FAQ, DCA said something that caught my attention. When displaying the Spyderco Tri-angle Sharpmaker, DCA uses it to sharpen his kitchen knives, but he said "not on my customs." Now, I'm assuming this has something to do with the value of custom knives, but is it because one doesn't sharpen custom knives because they never need it, or because one doesn't sharpen knives that cost more than some everyday sharpener?
I like to maintain a convex edge on my custom kitchen knives so I sharpen those with a sandpaper/strop method when needed. I'd say the only downside is that if you are dealing with a knife with a very acute tip, it can tend to get minutely rounded off with the Sharpmaker -DCA

I have only seen it from custom knife makers that measure it just above the micro bevel. This seems like a more accurate measurement to determine how 'slicey' a certain blade geometry would be. Hey there, DCA, great series. What can you recommend in a hollow grind wharncliffe that will be regularly used on heavy cardboard, packing tape, pallet straps and zip ties? I'd prefer a stainless steel that will hold and edge long enough for a night's work on said materials. Fixed or folder though i wouldn't want a fixed blade to print much. A folder I would prefer on washers and wouldn't want to spend more than $200 on whichever one. Thanks.

before the tri way pivot alot of people thought the 0562 was better than an actual Hinderer. I have the standard G-10 version and it is the smoothest knife in my collection, and i have an xm 18 with the tri way....that titanium version is better than the standard g10...if i were you i would get it...you will not be dissapointed...it's got the updated 20cv steel too

You're better off getting training on how to use a knife, and then you'll learn what knife to look for. It depends on the fighting style. Also, I highly recommend you to not pull a knife on someone unless you know how to use it defending yourself, or it's an absolute life threatening situation. If you don't know how to properly fight with a knife, I can take it from you and turn it against you before you even knew what was going on, and I'm not that experienced, I just know how to disarm someone.

Hello david, love the series and the channel overall. So long story short I'm looking for cheaper alternatives to the spydie chef, so basically a folder to do food prep on the go. I especially like the shape of the handle giving clearence from the cutting board. So far I have spotted a couple options like : -the crkt overland, but I'm not a fan of the materials used -the civivi plethiros -the kizer Wanderer. Do you have any recommendations? Thx in advance!
If you are not a fan of the Overland's materials, I would go with the CIVIVI for this one. The Kizer is nice, but I don't really think it is very "cheffy" in nature. -DCA
Hi David, My wife has lost some great Spydercos I’ve gifted her over the last year or so. We have horses so she’s constantly using one for cutting twine, rope, etc. Since she rides daily, the lost knifes are probably sitting somewhere in the middle of some field. When I think of a replacement, her requirements ensure the new blade will join the others in the field - small to fit a front pocket, with a clip. My thoughts are: bright, a possible other carrying option (neck knife), blunt tip as I’ve seen her try to cut a rope that had snared a horse (I mentioned using the blade like that was crazy dangerous - it didn’t go over well). Anyhow, what about the Spyderco Rescue?
If she's almost certain to lose it, maybe check out the Byrd line from spyderco, they have some rescue blades with serrated, blunt tips, which would be great for rope etc. Or maybe a scout carry fixed blade for the small of her back? It won't get in the way when she's in the saddle and it's not likely to get hung up and pulled out of the sheath.
For the guy looking for a kitchen knife set. I would go to Walmart and get a set that will work for the time being and slowly get better knives. Unless your willing to spend a pretty decent amount on a set ( $400 +) then the quality your going to get is pretty bad.

I think they offer a ton of control for precise edges. They can also be very fluid and it is fun to watch someone skilled and comfortable with the unit sharpening away. Personally I would recommend wearing a pair of kevlar threaded gloves (kcoti.com/3pQyXYV) to avoid accidental injury, especially when moving quickly with the unit. -DCA

Hey! So I work in a warehouse and don't have the time or patience to sharpen my knife on a daily basis. However, I cannot seem to find any sort of premium options for flip action box cutters. Is there some kind of market for that? Like just a nice handle and maybe auto action attached to a replaceable razor blade head? I just hate having to us this piece of plastic as my "work" knife.

I think part of the allure of 1095 for survival knives is just how bomb proof it is. It's so tough that it won't snap. But it's also easy enough to sharp on something you could find when you're out and about.
Best steel will always be subjective. Cpm-3v is awesome, until you need to field sharpen it. I'm very love hate with my 3v knife. When I think survival knife, I think a knife I can survive with, and that includes maintaining that knife when I need it, without anything special. 1095 is pretty amazing stuff. Newer isn't always better.

Spyderco Yojimbo 2, ( spyderco dragonfly 2 wharncliffe or Delica wharncliffe and so on) but they don't have powder steel except for the Sprint runs! . Ooorr Kizer has some of them, I think the Fire ant is one. And there are some more. Good luck and greetings from Austria
I believe the request was for a fixed blade recommendation for the altoids tin knife. I suppose being a survival type kit a fixed blade or at least a locking folder would be more desirable. Could definitely get a lot done with the sak though. I would probably go with a Swiss army knife myself.

Olfa Craft Knife CK-2 is also a good altoids choice and you can have replacement blades as well.

I have a request, with the multitude of after market pocket deployer options, and deep carry pocket clips can you recommend a knife I require for urban self defense, I need I knife that’s completely inconspicuous in the pocket, but with practice a short thin pocket clip will aid in the fastest possible deployment

before the tri way pivot alot of people thought the 0562 was better than an actual Hinderer. I have the standard G-10 version and it is the smoothest knife in my collection, and i have an xm 18 with the tri way....that titanium version is better than the standard g10...if i were you i would get it...you will not be dissapointed...it's got the updated 20cv steel too
You apparently started a run on Super Tinkers with my last question, I finally got it and it works perfect in the MKM magnetic sheath. (Also bought a Razelcliffe with it). Since you're a fixed blade guy, how do you feel about stainless fixed blades? Would you recommend any stainless fixed blades for someone interested in having one for general edc purposes?
Edit: Good edge retention and performance are necessary. Wider budget if necessary, up to $200-$300.

You're better off getting training on how to use a knife, and then you'll learn what knife to look for. It depends on the fighting style. Also, I highly recommend you to not pull a knife on someone unless you know how to use it defending yourself, or it's an absolute life threatening situation.
If you don't know how to properly fight with a knife, I can take it from you and turn it against you before you even knew what was going on, and I'm not that experienced, I just know how to disarm someone.
I have a question for dca I want a scandi knife my normal carry for outdoors is an esse 6 so what I am looking for is about 5 inch I like the look of benchmade 162 and eka nordic w12 also blade wise the benchmade 202 but these knives all have secondary bevels which I want to avoid , liked the look of helle didi galgalu but lacked a 90 spine for firesteel definitely needs to have a rise on the handle to stop hand sliding up if stabbing like esse6 also full tang not rat tang budget say 200 to 350 gbp bearing in mind cost of importation etc thanks

So long story short I'm looking for cheaper alternatives to the spydie chef, so basically a folder to do food prep on the go.
I especially like the shape of the handle giving clearence from the cutting board.
So far I have spotted a couple options like :
-the crkt overland, but I'm not a fan of the materials used
-the civivi plethiros
-the kizer Wanderer.
Do you have any recommendations?

If you are not a fan of the Overland's materials, I would go with the CIVIVI for this one. The Kizer is nice, but I don't really think it is very "cheffy" in nature. -DCA

Hi David,
My wife has lost some great Spydercos I’ve gifted her over the last year or so. We have horses so she’s constantly using one for cutting twine, rope, etc. Since she rides daily, the lost knifes are probably sitting somewhere in the middle of some field. When I think of a replacement, her requirements ensure the new blade will join the others in the field - small to fit a front pocket, with a clip. My thoughts are: bright, a possible other carrying option (neck knife), blunt tip as I’ve seen her try to cut a rope that had snared a horse (I mentioned using the blade like that was crazy dangerous - it didn’t go over well). Anyhow, what about the Spyderco Rescue?
If she's almost certain to lose it, maybe check out the Byrd line from spyderco, they have some rescue blades with serrated, blunt tips, which would be great for rope etc.
Or maybe a scout carry fixed blade for the small of her back? It won't get in the way when she's in the saddle and it's not likely to get hung up and pulled out of the sheath.

For the guy looking for a kitchen knife set. I would go to Walmart and get a set that will work for the time being and slowly get better knives. Unless your willing to spend a pretty decent amount on a set ( $400 +) then the quality your going to get is pretty bad.

My birthday is coming up in August and I've had my eye on the wicked edge pro pack 3 i know you guys have them available. Just seeking your thoughts on it. Once again thank you for your vids.
I think they offer a ton of control for precise edges. They can also be very fluid and it is fun to watch someone skilled and comfortable with the unit sharpening away. Personally I would recommend wearing a pair of kevlar threaded gloves (kcoti.com/3pQyXYV) to avoid accidental injury, especially when moving quickly with the unit. -DCA

David, are there any titanium folders out there (2-5-3” blade length) that have a polished/machined finish? Seems like everything out there is matte grey and tumbled or flamed. Looking for something to match my machined ti pen and flashlight. I haven’t spent more than $350 on a knife before, but would it if was just the right item.

Hey! So I work in a warehouse and don't have the time or patience to sharpen my knife on a daily basis. However, I cannot seem to find any sort of premium options for flip action box cutters. Is there some kind of market for that? Like just a nice handle and maybe auto action attached to a replaceable razor blade head? I just hate having to us this piece of plastic as my "work" knife.

What is the best Super-steel for a survival knife? CPM-4V? Just wondering as 1095 is ancient in terms of metallurgy composition and manufacture.
I think part of the allure of 1095 for survival knives is just how bomb proof it is. It's so tough that it won't snap. But it's also easy enough to sharp on something you could find when you're out and about.
Best steel will always be subjective. Cpm-3v is awesome, until you need to field sharpen it. I'm very love hate with my 3v knife.
When I think survival knife, I think a knife I can survive with, and that includes maintaining that knife when I need it, without anything special. 1095 is pretty amazing stuff. Newer isn't always better.

Spyderco Yojimbo 2, ( spyderco dragonfly 2 wharncliffe or Delica wharncliffe and so on) but they don't have powder steel except for the Sprint runs! . Ooorr Kizer has some of them, I think the Fire ant is one. And there are some more. Good luck and greetings from Austria

Why not put the Farmer X in the tin? Doesn't fit? Or even the mkm Malga for a better steel.
I believe the request was for a fixed blade recommendation for the altoids tin knife. I suppose being a survival type kit a fixed blade or at least a locking folder would be more desirable. Could definitely get a lot done with the sak though. I would probably go with a Swiss army knife myself.

They don't always, but yeah, it seems like it happens fairly often. Probably because they're catering to people who are tacky and have more money than they know what to do with.
