Fender Mustang vs Fender Jaguar | Why I Have Both

- Hey everyone! Today we are comparing my two short scale, offset guitars - my Fender Mustang, Cali, and my Fender Jaguar, Aerial. These two offset sisters definitely share a lot of common ground between them, but it's due to both their similarities and their differences that make me so happy to have both of them in my collection.
Check out @AudiomoMusic 's comparison video here!

A few of the cool people who follow my channel sent me this and I'm really happy they did! Thank you for the shout out! When you said you named your Blue Jag Ariel I had a huge smile, that's the middle name we gave to our daughter who was born in... California haha. Great playing and love the positive energy.
What a coincidence!! So glad you found your way here and thanks so much for making such great content! Your video definitely helped me decide on getting a Mustang!
@@nisebelle @AudiomoMusic wow this video popped up in my reccomendations, I love Audiomo's videos, cool to see him randomly pop up in the video. Gonna start watching all of your videos now Nisebelle! Keep rocking both of you
Count me as another who digs Audiomo's videos.

😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Bros out here on the internet complaining when their Les Paul is over 9.5lbs and you're rocking a 12+lbs jag!?! What a hero!
I had my Jag's body replaced with a mahogany one. I've never weighed it, but I have slowly looked more and more like Richard III over the years lol
I love how your playing samples morph into pretty cool tunes. Nice performance!
I actually got into @AudiomoMusic when first looking into offsets, and the fact that Jim also loves the Tele didn't hurt any! His videos offer so much practical perspective on being a guitar player (or just a functional musician!), and it's great to see him get a shout-out here.
I think you nailed it here that these two are "close enough" yet "different enough", which is perhaps ideal in particular contexts like you mention. Loved the mix of the two! I always say that comparing them in the mix with the final effect chain is important, as dirt has a way of either bringing out or subduing initial tonal differences of their individual resonant peaks.
Love the detailed explanations and Nisebelle your playing is so melodic, fun, and inspiring - meaning it makes me want to pick up my own Mustang and Jaguar and play!
Wonderful review, always wondered the differences and now it makes a lot of sense why you’d want to have both. Beautiful playing!!!
Your playing style is SO GOOD. I wish more guitar content creators played more mathy stuff!
What makes this mathy?
@@Lomoholga2 Its mathyrockyness
@@bigjen8238 I don’t get it lol
@@Lomoholga2 Idk, go and listen to "宇宙コンビニ『8films~tobira" .. Her playstyle is mathy, not gonna start pointing out specific guitar techniques that she uses and math rock bands tend to use
Fun video! And a fantastic jam! Your playing is so good. I love the angular lines of your songs. And the melodic textures. Great stuff!
Glad to see I'm not the only one out there that mods the crap out of everything. I have been on the fence about picking up a Mustang for a while now, but you sold me. Fun video, nice playing!
This is such a good comparison, thank you! Your playing is always such a treat to listen to, and I didn’t even realize how much more I liked the jaguar!
Slayyy. Also, glad Cali has kept the pickguard. Haha
Dang what a demo! And I totally agree on the sound, I don't own either but I knew a bit of what the Jaguar's capable of - it's nice to hear how the Mustang keeps up! It has a nice fullness that just sounds really nice, and definitely complements the kinda scooped jangle of the Jaguar. I know someone who might be big enough for a short scale guitar soon so I'll definitely keep this in mind!
I was just wanting to watch a comparison video, but man, I was blown away by your playstyle!
Nisebelle i love the sound of both Cali and Ariel. Never thought i needed another Fender but here we are! Love your very technical style of playing. You are amazing ❤️
These are not generally my style of guitars, nor was the demo tune my style of music, but the track had me totally invested. Super-fun and kept providing different flavors, I need to learn this! The playing was very consistent, and it's obvious you were having fun. Love that you would change to different pickups/settings frequently, and go right to the other guitar to hear the direct comparison, rather than other videos where it's clear the player mainly wants to wank around. Your thoughts on the guitars' strengths differences were very helpful. Thanks!
my opinion of the two were pretty much identical to yours. Never thought about owning either of these guitars as i typically play my HSS strat or my more metal oriented guitars but the way they both sounded with that OD pedal just made me fall in love. i may be adding two more guitars to my collection. Also those song you were playing were so lovely!
Hi there! Lurking viewer for your mod/build vids but your playing in this video made me want to reach out to my guitar so much. Thanks for the inspiration. Keep on rocking and have a wonderful holiday!
great video, awesome playing. I always find your playing style inspiring.
This is the right way to do tonal demonstrations. Awesome video!
This is totally awesome. I've gone the more traditional route of Strats (for round sounds) and Teles (for that high clarity bite), but it's so cool to be introduced to the other guitars in Fender's line this way. Thanks!
It's also that Jaguar is Treble based like a Tele, while the Mustang has Strat pickups that have been leveled to their bobbins, making for a super full sounding little shortie. It definitely is my fave because it compares to strats better than any other offsets imo. I mean a Jazz sounds way different again than any other Fender mentioned, in a great way, it's mellow yet LOUD. That's a strange and great thing to hold and play, loud but it comes off as as so smooth and chill tone wise. Great for Fuzz and other quacky effects. Still, Mustang is my fave for the rounded, overall can play anything sound.
Absolutely love the main demo track, it just builds and builds, and then just explodes when the fuzz kicks in. Top work, Nisebelle. Don’t have either a Mustang or a Jag (or a strat or that matter), and rely on Teles and LP Juniors ... but the temptation sure has been seeded!
That demo segment is the coolest, jammiest bit of music Ive heard in a while! Big fan!
I’ve had a japanese mustang for years as my only electric. It spends all its time at my practice space now (dont wanna travel too much with it in nyc traffic/grime) and i recently acquired a jaguar for my home guitar, specifically cause they’re basically the same lmaoooo. Interesting that you hear so much differences in their tone though!
In my non-expert opinion I would say that it makes sense that you have both because you absolutely fucking KILL IT when you play. I think if there's one thing I've taken away from years of G.A.S and Gear FOMO, one thing that keeps me sane and my wallet happy is that if you use it, you get to keep it. I can definitely hear what you say about the tonal differences but that merely speaks to the love, care, and effort you put into not only making these instruments yours but also using them with great ability. Cali and Aerial are icons.
Very cool video. Love your content. Been a fan for a while. Also don’t know if anyone has said it but you’re a total “Bad Ass” on guitar! Such a unique original style and your feel is amazing!! Love it!!!
Great vid, amazing and fun playing and super positive! Subscribed!
Came here for comparison, blown away by your playing. Seriously dude amazing
Really appreciated your energy and your guitar playing !
The neck on the cali is beautiful, you can see its figuring from the side. Love your videos nisebelle- informative and entertaining, keep it up.
Great pics from the shoot the other day. Digging it.
terrific video and compelling song demonstrations too! thankyou
Not for nothing, but I love when people name their stuff (obvi, in this case, your guitars). Great video!
Also, +1 for rec'ing the Audiomo's JG vs. Mustang vid... thanks!
Your playing rocks! Loved it. Look forward to listening to an album of that
I have a pair of modded mustangs in different pickup configurations (hums and singles). I love them so much. Now I need a jag! They fit me me better than a jazzmaster does.
Thanks for the video!
I just love your playing and composition in these songs. Great music!!
Really nice, Thanks for the hard work! Got a Mustang base and love it
Jag sounds consistently brighter to me, as I would have expected. Thanks for a great video. Excellent playing too.
What great playing!! Very fun!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I loved your comparison song. It was fun and amazing. Thanks for sharing your talent with the world!
Your playing is stunning. Some of the most beautiful demo music I've seen.
Great in depth video! I went for J Mascis Jazzmaster but always wanted a Fender Jag. And they both do different things and work perfectly as a team 🤝
You ever heard of Sebadoh? Worth checking out if you love early Dinosaur as Lou Barlow went on to form Sebadoh.
@@goregore6259 I know them :) thank you!
you're playing is exactly what i want mine to sound like!! thanks for this informative video
Thanks for the great discussion, dynamic playing, the awesome layering of guitar parts to show *how* they can work together, and ESPECIALLY for not boring me to tears with blues riffs as stale as a week-old 7-11 hot dog warmed in a microwave. Subscribed!
the song comparison you did reminds me of FLCL and im here for it!
also the jag neck is so twangy and i love it haha. both sound incredible and your playing is top tier!
Haha that makes sense! I grew up watching FLCL and listening to The Pillows nonstop - they're still one of my favorite bands!
Really great playing demos, especially in the Sisters section! Kind of a breath of fresh air from all the blues, rock, and metal I normally hear during guitar demos online (not that I don't like that stuff, just gets kinda samey)
what a tightly packed punch of info and stellar ear catching licks. i concur with your findings - you need both and they compliment, I find my '68 mustang is blooming, woody and barky, my mij '94 jag cutting, biting, trebly, and searing.
Definitely loved the mustang with the antiquity IIs and the detail look at both
Mascis Squire w Frailin noiseless and Squire Classic vibe Jag with Kinman noiseless both festooned with Woody’s “Masterful” trem and vibrato units over here. Both punch WAY above their weight.
Fantastic playing and compositions Gawdesse. Weapons grade stuff!
Thanks for the inspiration.
Both guitars are absolutely beautiful and sound amazing. But oh man, your playing and songwriting are top notch! Need that last song on Spotify 😅
Very well done video (script & editing). Great playing. You're cool.
Very nice, I could see why you have both. That was a great track and some great playing, colour me impressed🎉
Very informative. I've never ever considered a mustang. I've had a Jazzmaster for several years. Just got a strat (never thought I would own one) and I love it so much! Also just built a Tele and love it as well. All wonderful guitars!
I love offsets. The Johnny Marr signature Jaguar is pretty interesting, the pickup configuration makes it very versatile. Besides, I always wanted a Kurt Cobain style Mustang, just for the sake of it. I already have a modified Squier Telecaster Custom and a Ibanez AG85 Hollowbody. I can't justify owning more guitars really, specially because i modded the tele for being the most versatile guitar it could considering which styles I play. I am very happy with it, the neck is very comfy and the pickups sound aweome. I liked your Mustang more, I love all the sounds you can get from Mustangs :)
Really really really love you playing and your music.. thank you so much 🙏🫶
Love your distinctive playing. Truly unique.
I wasn't expecting such a weight difference between them! I saw the vid on Cali and the upgrade, with the pickups and phase switching, so it's not a standard Mustang anymore in that sense. But it's great you can have a guitar that can both complement and stand-in for Aerial. The pickups on Aerial definitely have a bit more bite but you've got more options with Cali.
And as always, great playing!
@@-vickyspit- There was a video a couple of weeks back showing how it got upgraded wiring and pickups.
Nice playing! These are beautiful guitars. Very unique and sound awesome.
I came here hoping this would help me decide between the two but i've left feeling that I definitely need to own both.
I can’t get enough of your guitar playing. Reminds me of so many bands that I can’t remember. That high-energy west coast style was always my fav! 🤘🏼
"Reminds me of so many bands that I can’t remember" Why is this such a perfect summary of her playing style 😲
@@rejuvenator8966 cause nothing but crap has came out in forever.
@@rejuvenator8966 but yeah I see your point. I probably should have thought that one through.
Great video!! I loved the editting, the colors, the playing, the sound and the way you speak!!
I've never played and Mustang before. Can't wait to try it out :)
I'm thinking about getting a Jaguar.. maybe squier :)
*The way they sound together is awesome!!
Great comparison video. The 2, no 3 guitars, you mention are also my 3 favorites. The bass vi is just incredible sort of an older sibling of the 2. While jags are my favorite guitar, I've gotta mention teles as well since they too have amazing jangle and lows depending on how you use and wire them. My first guitar was an 80s squier Tele which I no longer own and my second a black 62 jag which is still unmatched by any other guitar I've ever owned. Honestly that guitar has lower lows and shriller highs than any of the jags I've ever owned. The pickups are superior to anything I've found thus far. And for the $300 I paid for her in 1992, incomparable to any of the reissues I've owned. She just sounds better and part of that is the age and over wound pickups but modding newer ones comes close-ish. The mustang is a fab little guitar and I love how you use it in your music. They are close enough to interchange but you are def itely right about the mustang being a darker sounding creature. My friends 65 is also similar to my 62 jag in it's flat out amazing soundthat newer ones don't quite get but that's audio snobbery and also being lucky enough to be old enough to have gotten them before they became the go to indie guitars. The loar jag pickups do sound very close to the old ones btw. My 2001 LPB Japan jag is really similar to yours sound wise but your mustand sounds amazing. I really like the mods and how you play. Killer tune and video. Thanks.
Loved the demo song and the fact that you looked like you were having a blast playing it 👍
Great video, as always!
I often get bored by average or high end blues playing in demos. Loved yours ! sweet music + smile is the key.
I love your chord progressions wow! And cool guitars too!!
every time i watch one your videos, i dream about what it's like having a guitar with a good neck lol. both of these sound incredible together.
I loooooooove your playing style. Damn. I get some the pillows vibes from it. You've also made me want a Jaguar even more than I already did.
Great Demo, in your hands these are stellar. The offset sisters demo reminds me of Yvette Young, and I also loved the Mus. vs. jag demo too.
That all sounds really good! Nice playing
First time here... Sometimes CZcams algorithms get it right!
I have both also... Mustang hasn't had any mods to it (yet?) '65 MIJ reissue. Jag' 97 jg 66 with antiquities and staytrem, so they do sound a fair bit different, although they often tread similar paths.
Mighty fine playing and great video. It's clear you have put a lot of time into this vids creation. Thank you!!!
I did have trouble getting used to the names of your guitars and all of the 'she's', but no doubt that's just your way. 😎👍
Cheers 🎸🎸🎸
Wow.. love your playing. Love your mustang too. Thanks for sharing.
The jam sesh is incredible 🤘
Mustangs have never really been on my radar, but I really dug the sounds you got from it. I have a Jag that I love, but a very different pickup and wiring layout from yours
That Jag sounds a lot like my stock ‘97 Japanese Jag. Very musical highs but a nice syrupy rhythm circuit to round it out. Your playing is fantastic, a joy and inspiration to listen to, thank you!
Lovely playing as always.
Great video! I really like your playing style!
I'd bet it's those 1Meg pots that are responsible for most of the difference, awesome to see a direct comparison with all of the specs listed.
Very awesome demonstration. Thank you. This helped me make a decision which I want to build. I love both, but if I had to choose one, I love the timbre of the Mustang the best. (Taking note the difference in body wood, pickups, and possible circuitry chokes). I think even if I could get the same Mustang sound from the Jaguar, There is something about the simplicity of The Mustang. Thank you again!
This here. It's like a Tele in its simplicity to me, but it's far better than Tele can ever deliver with that vibrato.
Such an excellent video. New here, Jim recommended me, really enjoying the music and sound samples. Very neat guitars.
Outstanding video ‼️😍🔥🎸
love it. i owned both too 78' Mustang and a Greco copy Jag.. i should try this, put em' both on recording. great song there to demo how these two compliment each other.
listening to you play was s cool! i love your style, reminds me a lot of midwest pen pals and other math rock/midwest emo artists. might just get a fender jaguar soon, i love the sound!
I love seeing how your chops are sneakily getting better and better without you ever acknowledging it
Great playing! Cheers!
I love offset guitars, I have a Jaguar, Mustang, 3 Jazzmaster's, Cyclone, Toronado all from the Squier range, they all sound great, offsets are just so comfortable to play .
Your okaying style is really cool, I’m excited for my new mustang to show up
I don’t have either but I do have a Jazzmaster with P90’s and a Telecaster with Irongear hot single coils; both sound really nice and quite different. I’ve not tried any of the wiring mods (yet) but do have a hankering for a Mustang with either P90’s or splittable humbuckers - the number of guitars you need = n+1 😂
Nice comparison, very interested in your wiring mods!
do you know jazzmaster pickups are their own thing, and not p-90's? just found that out a couple days ago. but maybe you put p90s in? or someone did
@@user-to9jo2oq2f I put the P90’s in - Irongear ones, they’re way better than the standard pickups for what I want it for!
Awesome vid, great sound!!!
Matter of taste, i liked the four lower strings on the Jag more and the b and e string on the mustang. That song at the end was absolutely killer.
Thanks for making this video. I’ve been trying to compare the duo sonic with mustangs in the last week
Very well explained and played.
Cali has punch and great low end. The pickup is putting through the sound of the string with single coil character but the pickup and I think the 250k potentiometers let us hear it moving air as well; that's what I think is the main difference between the 2 guitars. I think this sounds especially good muting the strings and really lets playing dynamics come through. Aeriel has the 1 meg sound that's dry and crispy which interacts with reverb differently than other guitars. I've never owned a guitar with the foam mute but played one at the store and they are awesome.
When the discussion about owning multiple guitars comes up, a lot of times the go-to explanation is that different pickups sound different. One of the less-discussed things is that, especially with Fender guitars, different models have different bridge systems. I would say that's the main differentiating factor in play feel. Hearing the demo at the end really proves the point you're making; they are alike enough to stand in for each other, and when played together, become one, but are different enough to justify owning both. Some people have a back up for redundancy and some, for variety, and this combination serves both purposes. Very cool composition at the end.
Your riffs are so fire!
Cool video Nisebelle, your playing is so great 😎 These two guitars looks sooo cool (too much sound configuration for me, I'll be overwhelmed ahah)
Thank you so much! Excited to see what you build next!
Probably a Toronado Baritone or a Jagstang 😉@@nisebelle
Awesome comparison
My ears tell me that you need to release this track, this is so sick🔥
Great explanation and performance!
Very cool tunes. The specific tones between the jag and stang remind me of my own experience with them. I had to choose the mustang specifically for now; so lightweight and comfortable (if it has the body contours), and a more rattly resonance.
That was an awesome jam!
I didn't know you could take so many sounds out of two single coil guitars! The tracks are great also!
@leomilani_gtr Especially without a center position pickup.
