Nice work. You did a good job giving all of the relevant steps without becoming tedious or repetitive. I'll definitely use this video when I make a journal.
What a beautiful and thoughtful gift. Your dad is very lucky to have a son like you.
Really heartwarming to see you were giving a gift to your dad.
finally something I can actually follow without buying and making a lot of gears and jigs
this is a great tutorial, thanks man
Very informative. I've always wondered about methods for making leather bound books. Also loved the use of 3D printing for the embossing!
Five different videos later. I see yours. Thank you so much. So simple and to the point. Easy to understand. Thank you.
This is great! Book binding is something else I'd love to try. I wish there weren't so many interesting hobbies and no time to try them! 😂
So special! Any father would love it!
I’m currently working on a re-cover for a softcover art book of the artwork from Skyrim using the method you have described so eloquently. Thanks this is some really good content.
A really good video; clear instructions; no unnecessary repetitions. Beautiful filming.
Your storytelling makes it look doable for some who really isn’t that skilled as you! Nice the personal touch at the end.
Perfect timing, probably gonna be making a journal in the next few weeks
@@MorleyKert I was ordering the stuff you used in the video with the links in the description, do you have links to the book board and cardstock?
Wow, the amount of work in that is immense!
I was expecting all the bound pages to be pressed together and then put in a huge machine to cut the edges perfectly square. But i like the fact that it probably looks properly hand made, because it didn't go through that process.
I have a whole new appreciation for the work that goes into binding books now!
Thanks for watching! I have trimmed the edges in some other books I’ve made (just by using a utility knife against the straightedge) but I like the handmade look as well!
Thank you so much. This helped me not to make a new book but to rebind an very old book. Its that rabbit skin glue that was the messiest part...
This came out beautifully! Great work!
Thank you. I enjoyed this video, and you answered a question for me, as to how much extra to add to the dimensions of the book board as compared to the text block. You also gave a good explanation of adding the end papers. And I enjoyed the end footage of your Dad's enjoying his book!
This is the most amazing video I have ever seen, thank you so much. I'm just trying to get into bookbinding and this was so clear and amazing. Good job, this is fabulous.
Found your channel from the clock vedio, and still exploring, watched this one without skipping a second, loved it
This video helped me to make my own leather hard cover replacement for my bible that a company was going to charge me $450! Thanks for the vid Morley!
This is an absolutely fantastic tutorial. Thank you so much for this!
Really informative video! Thanks for making it! Makes me feel like I could make a few for gifts myself!
This is very detailed explanation. Awesome!
Very nice Morley. That turned out great. Even Dawn watched the whole thing with me.
This video was so helpful! Thank you!
I love how that book folder is literally what we'd use as a plant label in the uk lol, Nice work though man keep it up!
Well done ✅👍
That is sweet and looks great.
Loved this so much
Exceptional video. Thanks!
This was such an amazing tutorial!! Tha k you so much! Ive been really getting into book binding/making and this really helped clear up all the questions I had!:)
You gave me a great birthday gift idea. Woot woot.
@@MorleyKert of course, I'm glad I stumbled upon your channel. It's great content. I also can't wait to get a 3d printer
This is incredibly helpful! I plan to make a full hard-cover version of the Wizard's Companion from Ni No Kuni with this method. It's a much larger book but I think I can do it.
Headbands are not just decorative; they serve a function. They were originally used to allow you to pull a book out of a shelf using your finger without grabbing onto the spine cover and risking damaging the spine. However, it's important to note that you should never pull your books out this way.
Awesome family dude.
Thank you❗Excellent tutorial ❗
This is so helpful thanks so much
Nice job man!
This has GOT to be THE most comprehensive video I have EVER seen on bookbinding by hand. Awesome awesome video! Thank you!
Literally about to buy all the supplies to make one for myself
That came out great! Love seeing his reaction at the end.
Have you considered a curved needle for stitching the text block? I've found it makes it a little easer when you start stitching all those signatures to one another.
Thanks Justin! I haven’t thought about that, I’ll give it a try on the next one!
Wow Morely! I've been away for a bit. Your channel has blown up! Congratulations on your hard work! Loved seeing the process of the book! I have to go back and catch up on the previous I've missed.
The stitches are so clean and the embossing turned out so beautiful. Only thing i would add is a ribbon bookmark, hehe, loved this video!! ❤
I am a new subscriber here. Thanks.
Thanks.
Why are the groups of pages called signatures?
Awesome
Это Мастер-класс супер молодец 👍👍👍💪💪💪🔥🔥🔥💯❤
Great dad and great son. (-;
Since I view you as an expert in 3D Printing and DIY in general, could you tell me if creating enamel pins is possible/feasible? Not the cheap plastic, but some really nice, (metal?) pins ^^
Did you use the same glue for all the parts? Including the leather? Also, is there any reason to not wet the leather for the embossing?
What happens if at the last part when adding the book block to the cover, it's too tight? I messed up and I'm making a gift and I don't know what to do. I can't start over
Very informative and helpful video!
I'll use it a ton when I try to complete the ridiculously big task of giving my whole library leather covers!
Just one question.. Where can I get book boards or something else usable? I couldn't find anything, it'd be great if you could help me :)
Awesome! I’ve never actually bought book board, but you could probably get it from a website that sells bookbinding supplies
@@MorleyKert great thank you!
I'll look if I find something in my country!
Your video made me really excited about my project again and I think it might be actually doable! Thanks for that!
Where do you get the leather from?
if i have bookboard can I use it instead of what you used in this situation?
What an excellent video! What an excellent son! What an excellent present! And it's all because you had a Father that cared, didn't abandon the family like 50% of them do now; a Dad that loved his kids and they felt that love and attention etc. Good example of how it could be, yet most people I've known in my 72 years expected the kids to figure it out themselves, had no role models and felt like they were an unplanned burden!
I envy you. I'm certain you will succeed in anything you undertake in life. Thanks for doing this. I'm doing a similar project for my 72 year old "lady friend". She has a lifetime of excellent poems, from the time she was 8 up until her mother died a year ago. 86 pages of poetry. I typed them all into PhotoShop on various background pictures that suit the theme of the poem. Have 4 pages on a regular 8.5 x 11 folded paper and will do the stitching and finishing but only using " Craft Paper", cardboard and leatherette for the spine and 1/4 of the rear part of the covers. Hope it turns out. I already screwed up my first attempt. She found a half dozen typos so that had to be redone, and my spacing between the spine and the thin hardboard on each side was not wide enough. An 1/8" was just too little. Will allow a 1/4" this time around. Also my glue wrinkled the nice Craft Paper I glued on the boards. Proper glue coverage and using it sparsely is the key. Decided to use some vinyl covered paper for the inside pieces that connect the stack of pages to the inside cover. Push that vinyl connecting sheet right down that groove. Also I'm going to cover the nice decorative "Craft Paper" that I glued on the hard cover with "Mac-Tack" clear plastic sheet normally used for covering cupboard shelves etc. I'll wait a week though and make sure all the glue has cured.
Thanks for the video.
Is not necessary to glue the text block to the spine?
Open up a hardcover book and you’ll notice that the spine isn’t attached to the text block.
Is there machine that are doing this ?
I'd love to see you rebind a bible like this, but with round folded over corners instead of the cut corners like this book has. I've seen people who rebind bibles use multiple pieces of leather and then they'll cut a slit for the spine but never really go into detail like you do.
I wish u can do this for me😢❤
Canadian engineer?
das's content remade for hipster
Looks great, but you skip super important parts. Like what do you do with the glue that leaks or comes out after you press the book.
At the end, it doesn't look like it opens all the way.
Looks great
BUT!!!! It was already opened before he “Opened It” 🤣🤣
Craftsmanship is top notch though
This time I will do it manually with the help of Woodglut designs.
Very cool!
Book binders Apprentice here! You explained the process of handbinding incredibly well. I probably won't follow it (cause, why if I have all the machinery to make it) but I am still impressed!
That’s high praise, thank you so much!
