  • ROUTE INFO
Bus route: 17/18 (City Centre - Ely)
Operator: Cardiff Bus / Bws Caerdydd
    Length: 10.1 km (6.3 miles)
    City: Cardiff
    County: Cardiff
Country: United Kingdom (Wales / Cymru)
    PLACES SERVED
    Cardiff / Caerdydd
    - City Centre / Carol Dinas (start of the video - 00:18)
    - Riverside / Glan yr Afon (00:18 - 00:30)
    - Canton / Treganna (00:30 - 01:28)
    - Ely / Trelai (01:29 - 02:40)
    - Caerau (02:40 - end of the video)
My opinion: 6/10. Acceptable, has a rather nice bit in the city centre and when crossing the bridge bordering Canton with Ely, but other than that, not an exciting route and not one worth bothering, there are more interesting routes in Cardiff.
    Other notes:
    - This is my first ever bus route timelapse filmed in Wales, as well as my first ever time in Wales.
    - The 17 and 18 are exactly the same and use the same roads - what differs is that the 17 does an anticlockwise loop serving firstly Caerau then Ely, whilst the 18 does the clockwise loop. So, strictly speaking, this was filmed on a 18.
    - The 17 and 18 were also notable for being one of Cardiff's 18m Scania OmniCity bendy / articulated bus routes (the other route being the Baycar 6, which I've also filmed during my time in Cardiff), and were in fact branded as Capital City Red. However, the bendy / articulated buses were withdrawn in the beginning of 2022, replaced by a mix of standard 12m single deckers and double deckers.

You're not sticking to the 20 mph, you naughty boy.

Personally speaking, the route looked interesting to me. When you're brought up in London, the large single-lane dual carriageways, with the large bit of grass in the middle, can seem bizarre and quirky. Those features stood out to me, along with other little road layouts.
If you could find a way to identify where the timelapse ends in the video, that would look nicer. The end of the timelapse caught me by surprise because I've never seen Ely before.

That I could definetly imagine. And the route is okay, but tbh, when you come to Cardiff, I would prioritise the 61 first, which at least has some nice views at the terminus in Pentrebane.
Good idea about identifying where the timelapse ends in the video. The video actually ends at the end of the loop, in Caerau. Ely is before Caerau (or after Caerau if you do the 17), and I have put timestamps to identify where the area begins/ends.

@@gabrielstravels Oh, I see. That does partially come down to me watching the video before reading the description.

Late reply but 143 doesn't have the windscreen seat. It's 101-142.

My advice is don't bother with these. They get way too busy, therefore often late and overcrowded. The route itself if boring and the areas in general are really rough, I've had trouble many times before there.

I definitely agree that route is boring (hence my 6/10 rating). The bus I had wasn't too busy luckily, and as for the areas, yes they aren't the best parts of Cardiff but I haven't had a single problem whatsoever. Sorry to hear you've had many troubles before :(

Sadly, the same can be said for many other routes like 8,9,11,17,18,44,45,49 and 50. DONT DO ANY OF THEM. Chances are half the lot will be cancelled other lot delayed and crowded. If you want to do them, good luck. Maybe the 11 can be OK on a weekend but the rest of them won't be easy.

@@TheTransportCZcamsr I've done the 17 and 18 (this is the video you're watching lol) and it was fine, no overcrowding.
I plan on doing these routes you mentioned, but that doesn't bother me as my phone will be either on the back window (if it's a single decker with no front seats) or at the front seat (if it's a single decker with one e.g. Mercedes Benz Citaro or a double decker)

@@gabrielstravels Citaros are all over the place and the buses do have front doors except the Isle of man Batch which 141/142 has. 143 I'm not sure as its hardly on the road but the rest of them don't. So to confirm the citaro 101-142 (143 maybe) would have the front seat be mindful of that and good luck!
