      I don't think even Rodgers and Hammerstein realized what they were writing. They were so focused on the music and dances that it flew over their heads what they were doing with the actual story.

      I don't think it's meant to be. That's the genius of Roger and Hammersteins music. It was very ahead of its time and looking back now, it's super dark and actually shows the hero in a negative light and shows another dimension to the villian other than him just being the evil villian character. Even a few songs in this musical had to be censored for the film because they were too dark for cinema.

  • @JayKayEllEmm
    @JayKayEllEmm Před rokem +1

    I love how this song's melody parallels the classic "here comes the bride", since they contradict each other.
    I saw this show a little over a month ago in LA and pretty much every song with Curly was nothing more than Curly playing an acoustic guitar and, like, just...no. I hadn't heard almost any of the songs before seeing it and even then, I just felt like there was something wrong with what I was hearing.
    I'm all for updating classic musicals (my mom and I loved our showing's version of "Can't Say No", because it turned it from "Well, I'm a weak girl who has to listen to men" to "I'm a woman with needs and I can't help myself" and the actress played it to perfection), but don't change the actual music. Update the lyrics a little if they're on the offensive side, but don't change the music itself (on a case by case basis, I'm all for playing into your actor's strengths, which may or may not include changing the music, but this isn't one of those instances). Like, it should be Oklahoma for a new audience and you shouldn't have to have already seen it to like it.

    Things could've taken a different turn for Jud if Curly was a Christian and had told Jud about Jesus. I mean imagine how things would've turned out if Curly felt compassion for Jud and acted like Paul the apostle. Jud would've felt the deep warmth of Jesus's love and Jud would've turned into a new man. But no, Curly just had to be responsible for helping Jud become even more of a really angry beast and creepy stalker

      While I definitely here what your saying and I kind of agree, you have to remember that curly's only motive is to court/marry Laurey. In a way it is Laurey's fault for telling him that she is going to the dance with Jud, in fact, she should not have said yes to Jud when asked her if she really didn't wan't to go with him. But hey that's just my opinion. if there is one you can't convince of and that is Jud is a real creep. I've only seen the movie version of this so take my opinion with a grain of salt😊God bless you
