They way they both lean against the wall 23:25 i love it
Such similar outfits too
nice one
The embodiment of, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. Makes me think of all the things I’ve noticed but never stopped to inspect.
I’ve skated my whole life and usually end up in more “urban” areas where sometimes there can be a lot of random stuff or garbage and have found a lot of similar stuff. This episode really speaks to me because I’ve weirdly had a fascination with garbage and what people choose to throw away or the random crap people lose out in the streets.
Seriously. Feels like I didn’t see the world around me until I saw it through a lens
It feels like photography is the art of learning to see beautiful or weird or interesting things around you. Even if you don't take the photo, you still saw or noticed something cool. Even with no photo that's still a valuable skill!
The art of noticing,,, or being able to notice again 😊
It also provides a large degree of mindfulness that keeps me in the now.
It also seems to slow down the pace of my life so it's therapeutic
@@ModernElegancePhoto Yes, "present" is the word I was fumbling around
Spot on!
very true, since taking photgraphy more serious im more aware of my surroundings and find interest/beauty in the most simplest things. I walk a lot more now too LOL
I met Brian once in 2021... very nice dude. he told me that he was keeping a notebook of conversations he overheard, jotting down little snippets and phrases he found interesting. Incredible that his wealth of documenting runs this deep and serves as a guiding light to his photography.
Really enjoyed this one, it's clear Brian has his own vision for his work that isn't defined by the dominant culture in street photography.
23:27 when he leans against the wall and so does the person in the background 🔥🔥🔥
This dude's genuine curiosity and imagination towards storytelling for otherwise unnoticed/useless objects is truly inspirational. His awareness is something most people disregard whilst going about their day to day running on autopilot. Some of the gatherings showcased, as he said, had as much if not more content and substance as a photograph. Really looking forward to him publishing his book.
The Best
From videographers POV I gotta say I enjoyed the shot from 8:44 outside medical office. The way he takes a photo, turns around, stands right in the middle of a frame. I watched it like 10 times😂 I don't know, there's something about it. Love it❤
This was an amazing interview. Brian works on a level of day-to-day perception that almost all of us miss out on. I am totally amazed by his found articles that seem to always have a story beyond the discarded detritus of everyday life. he is an archivist for someone that is, for me, probably the greatest street photographer and educator on that subject that is still alive today; none other than the great, Joel Meyerowitz!
Nice to see you finally got to interview Christopher Walken! 7:56
🤣😂
This guy used to walk around my apartment with a candelabra talking about his Japanese camera all the time
This dude truly has a gifted eye for what he witnesses / finds. He should start a CZcams channel or something to go through all the various objects he’s found. It would be fascinating to have it archived somewhere online too
Brian is my favourite contemporary photographer, the only modern guy on the street that holds a candle to people like eggleston, this is the first time i've actually seen him he's delightful
Karlsson honestly has a staggering intuitive intellect into the human experience. Love that he could riff in the way he did.
Brian's thought process is cerebral. So much to learn from him.
These are a treasure. Really wish there were videos like these from way back in the day.
This walkie talkie in particular validated my own photography. I also take photos of random objects or things that I think are neat.
It's amazing how suddenly you can encounter someone you relate to so much. I got my environmental art BA last year and decided to just exist for a bit, because of the same technical and peer pressure rut. The stars just so aligned that my aunt had a spare camera and they aligned again for me to find this video! A lot of the subjects you touched on I've noticed myself, things like the frame going stiff as soon as you think about the composition with your conscious brain, or sorta getting that feeling of gluttony (?) when you come across an interesting scene and take a thousand pictures of everything. It's like I can already feel myself being drained at home, sorting through the 200 pictures in lightroom.
Also Brian's raccoon-like behavior is an immediate green flag.
Just brilliant, these videos are my new favourite thing!
Thank you for these glimpses into these wonderful people.
This one really connects to me and my shooting style. Thanks for introducing me to this photographers work!
Amazing project, great guy! I also loved that you went to his studio and him showing some of the pieces he found and the story behind it. I wish the video was longer and had more of him taking photos.
Photography is an act of mindfulness
this is without question the weirdest walkie-talkie ever and i LOVE IT (because it's so weird)!!
Love Brian's energy, and his photos are next level!
This is my favorite of your interviews. A genuine artist.
A true artist.
Keep up the good work 🎉
Thanks for sharing Pauli 😊
The lollipop incident; something that would make a great photo but likely couldn't be told in a single photo, that kind of stuff haunts me! I feel like I say it every episode, but this is probably my new favorite. Really resonated with the idea of photographing what's left from an event or moment. Signs of life, I'm usually more drawn to that than the active moment.
Your curiosity is really inspiring
Found this one so inspiring. Dude breathes passion . Keep em coming Paulie!
My favourite so far, I love Brian’s work, thanks for putting this together
Brian’s work is so good and his way of working is so admirable
Fascinating dude. I enjoyed this tremendously. Thanks Paulie.
I was at a goodwill and found a book with a film photo and a note in it, it seemed like the man was meeting someone important and shaking their hand, on the back of the cover, there was a note and it seemed like the book was gifted to this guy by his wife and then donated once he passed, it was such a cool momento of a random person's life, a forgotten story in history, I asked my mom to buy the book and she said no and to leave it, I still regret not picking that up to this day. Really sparked my inner historian/realization of Sonder, so much respect for Brian's work.
Great Valentine's Day gift. Even the day after. ❤❤❤
I am following Brian from years and I love his works. thank you for this interview
One of the absolute greatest, love his work.
Outstanding. I love this dude's approach.
I've been a big fan of Brian's work for a while this video is a great insite into his work.
Hey Brian, hey Paulie,
thanks for this episode. I was always wondering how Brian works. Really rad to see this. Keep it up. Take care and good luck for everything!
Reminds me of Bobby Puleo for those who know…Great work
I know what that container smells like
yes
What an interesting different twist on personal work. Can't wait for his book
Love this 📸 love how honest u are with it. I'm a sponge for skill. I'm new to photography an I'm taking advice an going for it. I can say it's def a passion. Thank you 🙏😊
one of the most interesting artists you have interviewed. thank you
One of the most interesting videos I've ever seen on CZcams!
Love this Brians work. Super dope and interesting.
I just love how different each photographers are from their personality, process, gear, how they shoot. which I believe you wouldn't fully realise just by the photos alone and thats what makes each episodes more intriguing and exciting. Brian is such an artist and the way he conveys the why of each photos really shows his artistic process. Also he has such a charming personality.
23:26 perfect synchronous chill mode
Crazy in depth thought processes - genius
incredible ! a true declarer of art
so wild seeing paulie walk through my neighborhood doing a walkie talkie. you normally dont see photographers roaming that area much.
I drive by this area all the time! loved it
This guy is a genius! Appearing casual but yet damn profound! And speaking with such clarity! He is better than Daido Moriyama, and he is young! If he keeps at it, he will make it! I hope so!
This might be my favorite yet. What a great guy with a beautiful vision.
I would love to visit an exhibition.
So very interesting.... This is so absorbing.
Man this was one of my favorite episodes. Really cool to see one of my favorites from instagram
OMG, That newspaper cover page (ANGORA) with Teletubbies is a thing of my childhood. Conservative politicians in Poland in 2007 made quite a big noise as they claimed that Teletubbie with red handbag is trying to make kids gay. Wild times :)
Nice find, to be honest that was the last thing I expected to see there
"the more and more I go, the less pictures I end up taking" - i feel this so much, and my realization that i can be more selective has made me so much better
love this one. :)
he should make a museum or public archive of this stuff on and offline so people can view and patron it all as well as his personal work. very fascinating
New favourite photographer
I feel like he's going to make it to the museum, he's mind is on the right track and he can talk about his work and he's entertaining when he does.
Very nice one
bro took "one man's trash is another man's treasure" to the next level and i really respect and admire that. it's a really cool way to add another dimension in your documentation photography (i know others before him have already done this). gonna adapt this to my way of shooting as well lol.
He gets it.
Best video yet!
Yes! He’s me.
A true gem
Strange coincidence when I was working at target there was some random guy who used to hide index cards with J day stuff on it and would hide them throughout the store and other areas until he got caught and trespassed
I can't relate fully to this kind of photography and mod, but i appreciate his energy.
Someday i hope to get a studio like his.
This guy is fascinating!!
I bet Brian isn’t married or living with someone. Brining the found items home is interesting.
Glad to see and hear a Brooklyn boy. It is striking how many Pauline B interviewees are film shooters. It is SO expensive. The series is inspiring.
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
23:26 made me feel good. Perfect sync.
Go Brian !!! ❤❤
“I don’t want to photograph a party, I want to photograph the deflated balloons.” Epic
That shipping container studio is legendary.
This man is the embodiment of "one man's trash is another man's treasure."
Great episode, great work, but I can’t help but laugh at him saying “gear doesn’t matter” while rocking what looks to be a Mamiya 7 around his neck.
It's usually people with $4000+ cameras and lenses who say that lol doesn't mean it isn't true though.
Really cool guy
8:12 so true, thats the way any artist should think
The Best Walkie Talkie video hands down. Even surpasses the Trevor Wisecup (Jack Nicholson with a pony tail) shenanigans that was my previous favorite. In any event, does anyone recognize where the shipping container office is? I am dying to go look for other workspaces like that for myself? I thought perhaps in Red Hook, Brooklyn given the view, but I couldn't find anything online.
Great to see real art.
Great content, great photos. I did think the whole time about the guy in American Beauty filming the trash bag
Great video as always. Paulie could you describe how you normaly focus when you street photograph ? Im thinking of getting in rangefinders but havent tried one yet, although i photograph for 4 years now. At which distances do you zone focus usualy ? Is it easier with the focus tab ? Sadly no one of my friend has a rangefinder to try it out.
I will be on the walkie talkie soon :)
This episode reminds me of a large set of Star Trek VHS cassettes out in a box on the corner in SF. I didn't take a photo but I should have! Stay curious and stay weird.
I hope that if I ever lose something odd and sentimental, Brian finds it. I'll know it's in good hands.
Really really loved this episode, wasn't the hugest fan of his work before but now I feel like Ive been inspired to take different kinds of photos. Also, just figured I'd point out a really weird moment at 23:25 where him and the old lady in the background both lean against the wall at the exact same time haha
paulie gotta do a walkie talkie with joel meyerowitz now.
Oh hell yes
Well now this was different. A photographer - archivist - scavenger hunter. Interesting!
This guy is so fascinating. He needs a blog or IG or something for all his strange findings.
That's what he looks like, I was like why his really sounded familiar until I saw his Instagram handle. Fun work.
finds and takes pics of sstreet odditites niiice!!!!
i’m pretty sure I heard that name before pretty curious about it, good one paul 👍
I absolutely get wanting to get away from just focusing on technical ability, its great to know how but to make the choice makes it more meaningful, always looking for the best digital point and shoot after years of medium format
This guy stole my catalytic converter. He lives in a tent under the williamsburg bridge
What?
Xdddd
So cool when I realized this was the same guy Joel Meyerowitz was bragging about in a podcast interview!
Do you remember what podcast it was?
one day Walkie Talkie will become international
23m26s .... perfect! 🙂
Yeah this might be your best.
there is a very particular and unique vision with this young gentleman, brian karlsson. it is reminiscing of the Greek philosophers when thinking and questioning our purpose, the objects, and artifacts within a mysterious context or circumstances. this is clear when his curiosity brings the "memory guy" both into play and action to make a fleeting moment permanent while this private side decides to keep his distance... not to break the magic. probably, to continue to recycle life, the value of it, or the candid refresh of his mind during his photo walks, exploration, and discovery of this so contradictory world of _____ ours? as we say: "la vie, la pute" --- mais sa sa photographie est une épicerie fine et fantastique!
