The embodiment of, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. Makes me think of all the things I’ve noticed but never stopped to inspect.

I’ve skated my whole life and usually end up in more “urban” areas where sometimes there can be a lot of random stuff or garbage and have found a lot of similar stuff. This episode really speaks to me because I’ve weirdly had a fascination with garbage and what people choose to throw away or the random crap people lose out in the streets.

It feels like photography is the art of learning to see beautiful or weird or interesting things around you. Even if you don't take the photo, you still saw or noticed something cool. Even with no photo that's still a valuable skill!

I met Brian once in 2021... very nice dude. he told me that he was keeping a notebook of conversations he overheard, jotting down little snippets and phrases he found interesting. Incredible that his wealth of documenting runs this deep and serves as a guiding light to his photography.

This dude's genuine curiosity and imagination towards storytelling for otherwise unnoticed/useless objects is truly inspirational. His awareness is something most people disregard whilst going about their day to day running on autopilot. Some of the gatherings showcased, as he said, had as much if not more content and substance as a photograph. Really looking forward to him publishing his book.

From videographers POV I gotta say I enjoyed the shot from 8:44 outside medical office. The way he takes a photo, turns around, stands right in the middle of a frame. I watched it like 10 times😂 I don't know, there's something about it. Love it❤

This was an amazing interview. Brian works on a level of day-to-day perception that almost all of us miss out on. I am totally amazed by his found articles that seem to always have a story beyond the discarded detritus of everyday life. he is an archivist for someone that is, for me, probably the greatest street photographer and educator on that subject that is still alive today; none other than the great, Joel Meyerowitz!

It's amazing how suddenly you can encounter someone you relate to so much. I got my environmental art BA last year and decided to just exist for a bit, because of the same technical and peer pressure rut. The stars just so aligned that my aunt had a spare camera and they aligned again for me to find this video! A lot of the subjects you touched on I've noticed myself, things like the frame going stiff as soon as you think about the composition with your conscious brain, or sorta getting that feeling of gluttony (?) when you come across an interesting scene and take a thousand pictures of everything. It's like I can already feel myself being drained at home, sorting through the 200 pictures in lightroom.
Also Brian's raccoon-like behavior is an immediate green flag.

The lollipop incident; something that would make a great photo but likely couldn't be told in a single photo, that kind of stuff haunts me! I feel like I say it every episode, but this is probably my new favorite. Really resonated with the idea of photographing what's left from an event or moment. Signs of life, I'm usually more drawn to that than the active moment.

I was at a goodwill and found a book with a film photo and a note in it, it seemed like the man was meeting someone important and shaking their hand, on the back of the cover, there was a note and it seemed like the book was gifted to this guy by his wife and then donated once he passed, it was such a cool momento of a random person's life, a forgotten story in history, I asked my mom to buy the book and she said no and to leave it, I still regret not picking that up to this day. Really sparked my inner historian/realization of Sonder, so much respect for Brian's work.

there is a very particular and unique vision with this young gentleman, brian karlsson. it is reminiscing of the Greek philosophers when thinking and questioning our purpose, the objects, and artifacts within a mysterious context or circumstances. this is clear when his curiosity brings the "memory guy" both into play and action to make a fleeting moment permanent while this private side decides to keep his distance... not to break the magic. probably, to continue to recycle life, the value of it, or the candid refresh of his mind during his photo walks, exploration, and discovery of this so contradictory world of _____ ours? as we say: "la vie, la pute" --- mais sa sa photographie est une épicerie fine et fantastique!
