They just build the cost into their model. As the prior report on DN said, they have 18 yrs. to pay out, and the interest they'll earn on their billions will exceed the fine. They'll be richer in 5 yrs. than they are today. The only solution here is to imprison them, but that's never going to happen. Corporate governance must end.

Our Congress, both parties aided and abetted the Sacklers to start this BS. I call them heroin pills, that is a much more truthful description of what they are.

Purdue claims that oxycontin was safe and effective if taken as directed, but that's explicitly untrue. They said the medication was supposed to last for 12 hours, knowing that it would wear off after only 8. When the patients would ask their doctors about taking a smaller dose three times a day, the doctors were instructed to urge patients to stick to a 12-hour dosing schedule, but to increase the dosage. The addiction was absolutely by design.

As a chronic pain person, I am sorry for your loss. What type of pain was your son in? I have 12 ruptured discs and I took oxycontin from 2003 until I weaned myself off of painkillers in early 2023...
I always took them as prescribed. Now I'm taking way too much ibuprofen. I have come to the conclusion that some people take them as they should, and unfortunately some people abuse them.
It's been very hard for me to get them, the main problem to me is the Pain Drs who make us take steroid shots (in my spine) because they can bill our insurance for thousands of dollars, every time they do the injections, which is usually once a quarter.
I appreciate the update on the Sackler family, and the people who fight against them. Maybe they should look more into the Pain Drs and clinics that prey on people who are in chronic pain.🎉

Doctors are now terrified to treat those who actually need pain medication. I was shocked to be discharged from major surgery with nothing but what one would take for a minor headache. Thank god my dad is a doctor, he made sure I was ok and thanks to the proper meds (thank you Oxy!) I got through the worst of it. These are crazy times when the actual people these meds were designed to assist have no way to get treated. Addicts should not be the reason we don’t prescribe for those in need. Pain relief needs to be reasserted as a patient right!! Addicts will be addicts and should be separated from physician liability and scrutiny for prescribing correctly.

I recently had a lot of pain in my middle back which I have never had before so I checked online and they said it is likely from bad posture so I found some exercises to do on youtube for middle back pain and now the pain is gone. Online like CZcams and GPT-4 can give me an accurate diagnosis without pain killers.

Chronic pain, surgical recovery, pain relief is absolutely vital. Tylenol and advil will not solve this pain. Let people who are suffering choose quality of life regardless of how long they have to live. Addicts are going to get addicted and this should not affect patient care. Make everything legal like Spain and let those of us who need pain treatment get the medication we need that we are not addicted to.

@@1karenparrish hey karen, if you’ve ever experienced chronic or major post surgical pain and in those cases not been given medication you should have received you would understand. No one can stop addicts from doing what they do. Legalizing and destigmatizing drug use and funding drug treatment is a far more intelligent use of resources than making pain meds inaccessible to those who actually need them. These medications are just that, and crafted to be used for treatment of pain that is so bad it prevents people from functioning. Not making it available to those who actually need it in order to accommodate addicts (who will do what they do) is not reasonable or fair to the rest of us. Pain management used to be a patient right and is important. This idea that pain is good and serves a purpose is cruel and inhumane. We are not talking about a minor headache or a stubbed toe. We are talking about people who cannot move or would rather die than keep going due to pain. Who should, in this scenario, suffer? I believe people who have pain issues and need medical treatment should get the help that need to endure and hopefully recover from their pain causing condition. Currently it is a huge challenge and people in need are sadly denied the care they should receive. We cannot control addicts behavior. The best we can do is provide them a way out of addiction if they choose it. In the meantime treat patients and give them the help they need and deserve.
