Dude you just helped me look like a badass ..hahahaha. It worked. For a year we have just been putting towels on the counter to catch the water. I was secretly waiting on the landlord (father in law to fix it) Today he attempted to make this plastic funnel thing to allow the water to drain into the sink. I'm old and he's older... so a workaround for somethings is often a nod to creativity. But that was a lil too ghetto for me. I was going to find a solution or call a plumber. I found both...right here on CZcams. Thanks a bunch. Bet you never could imagine a 5 year old video could reach a home in Fresno California with stellar success hahahaha. Thanx

Let me join the thousands of people who are already thanking you for this no nonsense, short and sweet video tip. Never would have imagined such a use for a paper towel roll. Amazing. I hate going through the hassle of calling service technicians (be it plumbing, irrigation, a/c or anything else for that matter) and begging them for their availability / scheduling them and being at their complete mercy. You have saved all that pain and hassle for thousands. You deserve more than a thank you.

Like everyone else, thanks you for the simple fix. The paper towel trick was exactly what I needed to fix the issue. What is the best way to keep this from happening to my airgap? I must say the we use our dishwasher every couple of days, and we rinse the dishes prior to placing them in the washer. Very little to no food or garbage is left on the dishes before they are washed. So basically we are sterilizing the dishes. Is this buildup or clogs from the soap or grease? We use Cascade Platinum pods.

Wow.....you are the MAN!!!! Why did I wait weeks to CZcams this problem? Smh.....just waiting all that water seep into the counter and had to wipe it up each time the dishwasher was used.
I JUST watched the video and did it and unbelievable, I heard this POP! I turned on the hot water, then turned on the garbage disposal and let it run for a while. At first, it stuck like holy heck which told me it’s been plugged for a while. Then the smell went away, thank goodness! I’m sure when I go use to the dishwasher soon, it won’t leak anymore.
    Thank you!!!!!!!

Had water come out of the air gap and had cleaned out the clogged hose between air gap and disposal multiple times (it's now cleaner than a factory hose!), the filters inside the dishwasher and had been messing around for almost 2 hours before I saw this video and thought "It can't be this simple!". Well, I was kind of out of simple options and was considering pulling the dishwasher out to work on the drain hose between machine and air gap and not happy. Had nothing to lose, so I did the paper towel blow trick. Noticed something happening and ran a quick cycle. All dry. Thanks guys!!

Oh my goodness, thank you so much. I had the Normal wash light flashing on my Kenmore Elite dishwasher. Now this dishwasher is older and I had just replaced the control panel a few years ago..so I was very frustrated. I managed to get the washer to drain all the way pressing the clear cancel button all lights then went out or so I thought. Moments later the light was flashing again. So I just thought id start trouble shooting everything and sure enough i had water coming out of the air gap..so much easier blowing on the air gap than taking everything apart. And it worked. Thank you so much…I almost ordered a new control panel and a rebuilt one is $94 dollars and a new one is a few hundred dollars and that’s on back order and sears no longer makes or sells this part. So Thank you. I sure hated the idea of replacing my machine. To many things taken to the landfill these days.

Thank you for this video! So far, so good. We did the paper towel, then blow tip. We didn't hear anything pop or dislodge, but it probably helped. We did a modified version of your second tip (which was remove the hose to clean it) after seeing a comment about cleaning the garbage disposal port that connects to the hose. Reach inside the garbage disposal, feel for the port and clean out the sludge blocking the port. I used a flexible narrow bottle brush to get the gunk out and scrubbed the port clean. The hose just beyond the port is at a soft 45* angle so the sludge had settled there laterally. Then, I flushed the port with hot water from the flexible faucet. Dishwasher is draining properly now. This video helped save a costly plumber service call and also avoided a visitor inside during a pandemic. Thank you.

I took over my father's home last month after he passed away and the 17 years he's owned this house he never used the dishwasher. I normally wouldn't either, but today I tried it and I really wish he had given it a chance. During it's first rinse cycle, not only did it rinse the dishes, but also the walls, counters and floor! I had the most unusual situtation that should be mentioned for the weekend plummer such as me. I had just installed a garbage disposal. I detached and reattach exactly the same way. However all the water was coming out of the air gap when we ran the dishwasher or water spicket. It was a simple fix that had me reinstall everything again. What I failed to do is tap out the plug to where the dishwasher waste water goes in the garbage disposal. With the being plugged up, all the water was going out of the air gap. It was a mistake that cost me to install everything twice.

No, don't "stick something up the black hose" to clean it out. Instead cut a circular piece out of a sponge 2" in diameter. With a pliers, bend the last inch of a coat hanger or stiff wire so it pinches the 2" sponge tight. Push the sponge end DOWN THE DOME COVERED BREATHER, from which you've already removed the top 2 parts per this video. Push it all the way until it comes out the bottom into the bucket you put there to catch the clogged slop. The sponge will scour the sides as it goes down, pushing all the clogging refuse ahead of it. Scour the sides -- that's why you cut the sponge much bigger than the inside of the hose.

Good tip, James! Now, if only my system was like this one. I don't have a disposal, so my air gap only comes from the dishwasher. Water rushed out, so line is clear to dishwasher. I guess it's my dishwasher's drain going below it where it does its draining that's clogged.

I watched yours and another video to figure out what the heck I'm going to do with my new Bosch dishwasher not draining. I cleaned the filter on the dishwasher to no avail - still had the E-24 code lit up. Then I saw the air gap problems and opened the air gap valve and it was still brand new looking (2 month old dishwasher and stainless sink/faucet set-up) but I put a long bottle brush next to the hole, nothing came out. Then the other guy said to stick your hand in the disposal and feel for the tube that leads to the air-vent...I stuck the bottle brush into that (not my hand thank-you-very-much) and didn't find anything but started the dishwasher again...No error code! Just moving the flexible brush in both areas fixed the problem. I didn't know how I would pay for a plumber or how to even tackle a 'man's job'. Thanks for the tutorial that even this lady could understand. :)

Great info, but I have to admit, this didn't solve my problem. I don't have any experience with dishwashers nor garbage disposals, so I didn't even realize this was an issue until I sold my rental house and it was mentioned in inspection, the reason why I'm here. There was no debris, neither top nor bottom. But I found it odd that when I took the hose apart from the garbage disposal and put my finger into the hole of the garbage disposal where the hose was, it was blocked! I was wondering what would the purpose be for this hose, when there's no where of it's contents to go! Like a door opening to a wall! So then I looked up a video on how to install a garbage disposal, and voila! That blockage is a "knock-out" plug and supposed to be knocked out with a hammer and screwdriver if using it with a dishwasher! So I did that and it resolved the issue. And that answered another mystery of mine. When my tenants moved out, I found it odd that there was a big pile of hard substance covering the air vent. At the time, I had no idea what this gadget was, except that it was unsightly, and I knew I was taking a risk by scraping off all that junk and getting that gadget nice and shiny again. So that means that my tenants (the one's who installed the disposal) prevented the water leakage with all that unsightly hard-like substance. So even though all is good to go, I have a new question in mind. What is the purpose of even having this air-vent! My tenants have been using the dishwasher and garbage disposal this whole time without any issues by blocking the vent with that substance.

Paper towel trick is a good start, but did not work for me. Water still poured out of air gap when dishwasher ran. Solution for me was three extra steps - 1) shop vac (suction) on the air gap; 2) shop vac (suction) on the smaller hose that comes out from dishwasher that I disconnected from the air gap; 3) cleaned out that horizontal pipe that runs out from garbage disposal to other side of sink. Ton of sludge in there... that was a fun one. Once all these extras were done, voila.

Dude, the paper towel tube method totally worked. I could actually feel, hear, and see the blockage shoot out into the garbage disposal. Pretty cool. Thanks!

You helped me blow out my clog, thx. I guess that since I am in the habit of only using the disposal for a short blast until water drains, that could be part of my the dishwasher black hose wasn't able to drain correctly too. I guess I'll run the disposal for 10 seconds before using the dishwasher now.

The paper towel roll trick was genius!!!! Worked like a charm! Question though... was the clog from the disposal, or from debris in the dishwasher?

Worked for me. Not sure how the clog was in the air-gap as the air-gap was flowing water. But I followed your directions on blowing in the paper towel tube and I felt the clog push out. Works great now. Thank you!!

    • @JackJensenTrader
      @JackJensenTrader Před 5 lety

The clog was between the air gap exit and the disposal, but the line from the dishwasher to the air gap was clear, allowing the water to flow up and out. Now, if only I had a disposal line to clear... My dishwasher's vent line doesn't join with the sink (because no disposal), so my clog must be under the dishwasher to the drain.
