Really? Alexandra and Danie? Simultaneously uploading? OMG which one should I watch first? Love you both ☺️
Exactly!!
@@kattemilla like literally watch one on my phone and the other one on my laptop 😂
😂😂😂
Literally the predicament I just went through
Loved this style
Everyone is raving about this room when they stay over ♥️ so cozy, so moody and so perfect! Great job friend, thank you again for bringing your talents and love to my home ♥️✨
Are you kidding me? It looks like a coffin.
@@kimhaas7586 seriously?! A pretty coffin like that would be wasted on the dead. :P
@@jenniviiv Or get another friend to help steam off the wallpaper and prime the walls for the multiple coats of some other color like Budding Green or Love Letters from Benjamin Moore’s CSP collection. Ok, Nevermind. I’m just obsessing about making this room really sing and salamander ain’t it.
@@kimhaas7586 what coffins have you been laying in? 😂
@@kimhaas7586 the drama, lol. It’s not your room and not everything on the internet needs to fit your aesthetic. I’d love to see what your place looks like😂
love that you’ve stepped out of your comfort zone with both this and your boyfriends makeover!
Thanks! It’s been super fun to experiment
Oh , yeah, I forgot , that was a triumph of colour too! Yussssss.... Alexandra ... lovely bright new 2021!
Yes! I'd love to see you tackle different styles!! This one turned out awsome!!
Agree!
And both were phenomenal!
Loved this makeover! There are some comments saying that it doesn’t match the rest of Danny’s home but personally I kind of like that! I feel like when you have a large enough home with multiple rooms it can be fun to creat kind of like a “hidden gem” that’s different than the overall flow. Especially since it’s a guest room, which usually doesn’t have a lot of foot traffic on a day to day basis. Love it!!
I love the look of this room. If I was to make a suggestion, I would pull in the purple from the wallpaper a little more. Like a dark purple chair and a light purple throw blanket...something like that to tie in the wallpaper a bit more.
I would have also used a sharper knife to trim the wallpaper. Some of the edges look torn and raggedy.
I agree; that odd green chair just makes me wonder why??? Like a plum or soft mouse gray or a variation on the teal of the paint color would make more sense.
Oh Lordy... the wallpaper not meeting the slope in the wall would drive me mad!! 🙈
Don't buy an older home then! Lol. NOTHING will line up, be square, level or "normal".
@@jenniviiv I came here to say all of this. It was a really sloppy job on the wallpaper, especially since it's not peel and stick, so it's more "permanent".
@@jenniviiv yes that bothered me too, also why paint the wall where you are going to wallpaper?
Diy danie should have called y’all to do this make over instead::::::
@@grasyahmia3304 I know right smh
A neater finish for that wallpaper... Crease the edge as you did with that tool (or with the edge of some scissors), then while it's still wet, pull it away from the wall a little and cut along that creased line with scissors, and smooth it down. This is how we do it in the UK.
I like what you've done with the room, it's dark and moody. I don't really see 'British' in it at all, and it's so vastly different from Danii's 'Farmhouse' style in the rest of her home.
So this was one of those makeovers I felt wasn’t going to last because such dark colors are impractical in modern homes. And the day has come when Danie is yet again making over this space to bring in light and brightness.
Pasted wallpaper is supposed to be “booked” . The paste is applied to the back of the paper and then you fold it end to end. Let is sit for 15 minutes and then hang the section. And repeat. Also all wallpapering starts with a plumb line. Keeps things on track .
Please acquire all the proper wallpaper hanging tools, research all the proper steps, and promise, promise, promise, that you will only hang wallpaper absolutely perfectly, correctly, and properly in future. This is an area where perfection is not only easy (although annoying), but the only acceptable method.
And the sloppy trimming of the wallpaper after it was hung made me want to scream.
And wall papering without sizing or priming is killer to remove. No favors done here for future redoing.
I’m sorry, but can these people not get on CZcams and at least try to learn to do things the right way?? When I go to do something I haven’t done before, such as hanging wallpaper, I research to learn how to do it before I start. That’s just me in my own home. I can’t even imagine going to someone else’s new home and jumping in and start making semi-permanent changes without knowing what I was doing. And then to top it all off they film it and post it on CZcams!?! I don’t get it.
I worried about the color but in the end I love the room, It all fits together and it is a joy to see a room that is not a white one. Please do more rooms where the color theme is not white or off while.
For me, everything looks good up until she added the light wood coat hangers, bench, and baskets. I feel like they do not compliment the dark academia mood she's aiming for. ☹️ I understand the need to mix up styles to prevent it from being boring. But I feel like adding boho/rustic items are a bit underwhelming if you're trying to achieve elegant/moody vibes.
absolutely, I also feel the chair was more retro 60's/70's. But it still looks great and its cool to see something new!
I feel like everything still looks beautiful but it’s just not the “dark academia” I was expecting in the end.
Yeah, agreed. Maybe Danni's trepidation made her second guess herself and try to "salvage" the space with lighter accents.
I think she mist a great opportunity to get some of those library green table lamps for the stands....Screams Dark Academia to me
Staining them would work, in a darker, warmer brown.
The unfinished wood pieces and baskets and the bedding don’t say dark academia. It seems disjointed and the wall paper could have been elevated by some thin trim moulding to finish the ragged edges. Beautiful wallpaper, sconces and rug.
I love the dark and moody vibes I just think it feels sparse and needed to be filled out more with accessories and art to really lean into the cozy and academia side.
Yes!!!!!!
Yes, Canterbury Cottage has leaned into Dark Academia very well. Lots of cool accessories since she's into crafts. People are not used to this style. Also she was away from stores and without all her crew. And on a two day makeover of a room she only saw online. Lighten up, people. TFS
Yes, totally agree! It’s too minimal to really be “dark academia” but it’s a good base.
I'm a girl who loves darker colors and walls in decor so this room was absolutely up my alley!
She is right. That wallpaper IS everything! I 💘 this room!!
Early in this video Danie says "We are going OG Farmhouse". She got "Dark and Moody Academia". I watched Danie's channel master makeover and Alexandra's channel makeover of the guest room, and while the dark and moody is a change for Alex, it doesn't go with the rest of Danie's house, strikingly so.
I think that was the point of it, for it to be really different.

Right? I feel like she asked for farm house and got something else, like Alexandra didn't really listen to what Daniele wanted n designed the room she felt like doing.
I kept saying to myself “trust the process” in the end totally loving the cozy vibe. And two of my faves Alexandra and Danie perfect Saturday morning.
Love those walls! Personally I'd wanna stain the light wood items to match the sidetables - but I also tend to lean dark in my decor style. Definitely love these darker, moodier makeovers lately. Well done!
What is so great about an upstairs attic-style nook of a room is the washy light that happens when you're closer to the sky. The dark green just demolishes any hopes for feeling like you are up and away. I love the color and the boldness but not for an attic room. In my opinion it's way too heavy and bold for a space that should feel like a cream puff. But I do love that chair!
Loved this! Dark academia is my vibe.
I know Danie chose the bed, but I think a vintage brass bed would look amazing against that dark color.
Probably a cost factor. She could look out for a cool brass bed in future.
I enjoy watching your channel. This is definitely going to be a love or hate design. Personally not my favorite but appreciate you trying something different.
This room just screams for a fun statement light that casts gorgeous, if not slightly eerie shadows across the ceiling to complete the whole vibe.
You guys seem like such good friends, so I’m surprised you seem so far from her style. It sounded like you were more concerned about implementing a certain look rather than designing something specific to her and the flow of her home.

@@sandieedward8214 beautifully interpreted. Put thus way....HELL YES!!!!
I honestly don't know what you all are banging on about. It makes way, way more sense to take the wall colour up to the ceiling than it does to paint the small-ish ceiling space a different colour. It's a no-brainer. That's a seriously gorgeous colour btw. I am currently nearing the end of my tiny house build and I fully intend to paint my little "dollhouse" in the same way.
Please do more rooms like this. This is exactly my aesthetic and I can't find any good videos with this vibe.
Look for Rachel Masky's room makeovers
My thoughts exactly!!
Lone fox dining room makeover
@@juicebox333 I've seen that one and loved it. Hes probably one of the youtube channels that's closest to my aesthetic and what I want in my house.
Maybe houseofvalentina could be interesting for you! 😉
This was so refreshing and different in the best way! Love that you’re stepping outside of your comfort zone.
The color is gorgeous, but as someone who painted a deep purple and dark rich red rooms once I had to paint over them…..I cried 😂
I was so freaking crazy as a teen, never will do an entire room dark again but OMG I love this color.
Honestly I feel like this fits the house perfectly. It’s old and new all at the same time!
If anyone ever lights those kerosene lamps they will SET FIRE to the sloping wall! Trust me. Did that with a candle when I was a teenager 🔥😲
I agree very fire hazard 🔥
It’s just for decor 🥰
@@AlexandraGater it’s full of kerosene, it is a fire hazard. They are lovely and easy on the eyes. But they are not bookends. You can find old kerosene lamps made into electric lamps. Probably a little out of budget. Over time the eye will pick up that the wall paper pattern isn’t matched. There again probably not in the budget. I do like the foundation you set for the room. Dani can change up little bits over time, that’s a big plus in decorating. Congrats.
@@ellenfrances1303 oh good grief. I grew up with kerasine lamps. That is all we had. Turn wick down low and no problem. You are looking for things to complain about
@@ellenfrances1303 Don't risk it! Fill that puppy with colored water and don't ever use it. This room will be used by guests and you don't know if they have familiarity with this type of lamp. If lit, and knocked over, it will be a tragedy.
It's beautiful!
The only thing I would change is the overhead light. It's definitely better than the original, but it's not what I would have picked. I feel like it was an opportunity lost.
Love love love the paint color! 🤩
Totally agree, came to the comments section looking for this comment. Could have been a statement but I think she planned to bring something else - on the mood board she had that sort of sun shaped light - maybe it didn’t arrive on time or something
And the trim, I would've kept every trim white. It's sooo dark. I don't like it that much.
@@xDenituUx honestly, if I was told I could stay in this room or Dani's new master bedroom (the other video), I'd choose this one. I like dark and moody... it's very comfy and cozy to me. (For context, my bedroom is a dark purple with blonde wood trim.)
The light and airy "boho" rooms are pretty but I would not want to live in them.
@@katherinechu4581 Oh... that makes sense. I was surprised AG did not focus on the light especially when Dani pointed out the badness of the original light.
Totally agree with you on the overhead light. It stands out, and not for good reasons.
This is a really beautiful room that’s 1000% up my lane but I feel like it rly doesn’t fit well with the way the rest of danie’s house is decorated
Was to Escape Stress or people...
Two back to back makeover videos that aren't bright pink, whimsical pom pom explosions?? I feel so spoiled. This room turned out AMAZING. I'm in love.
Hey Girl! I love that you're evolving and incorporating design styles outside of what you;d usually be comfortable with, but this top-to-toe colour wasn't for me, mainly because this was in complete contrast to how DiY Danie had designed her own house - light and airy. So I felt there was a lack of cohesion/flow there. That being said, the elements of the design were gorgeous, just maybe in another house...with much higher ceilings! xx
Ya, it doesn't match Danie's vibe at all. I thought it was somewhat disrespectful.
I also felt like she didn’t take Danie’s style into consideration and you can hear how apprehensive she is. Especially in such a small space, this makes it seem even smaller.
Maybe I have no vision, but don't get how the color of the wall, wallpaper color & chair color correspond.
I think maybe a leather chair could work well
I think it's kinda like they used to say in What Not To Wear... it doesn't have to match, it just has to go! I think the different shades of green work together quite well. But then it's a question of personal taste as well! Not everyone will like that chair color, for sure... xD I love it, but I'm aware it would be controversial to many. lol
It’s a little off, especially with the striped bed linen. A more dark academia choice would have been either a purple velvet or cognac leather arm chair. (In fact none of the furniture, bench, bedside tables or armchair scream farmhouse/vintage/dark academia to me, it’s actually quite mid century which clashes with the theme). I mean it looks fine, it’s just a little too mix and match for my taste.
Agreed. Too much stuff going on, and with a room that has such low ceilings it just makes it seem dark and lacking daylight... Plus too many different things together. It is better than I expected when I saw here putting everything together, but still not wow.
I don't like any of it, no hate I'm not a fan of AG I came to see it because I love Danie work, this really doesn't fit her home,
I wish I knew what the old colour was
The room has this victorian era vibe to it. I love that you kept the original wide plank flooring.
I want to love this so much, and there are some elements that are amazing, but this one didn’t hit for me. I think there are weirdly too many bright aspects to me. (The rack, the chair.) Still love you though girl! 🖤
I was so happy that there was no green lead paint on the floor if this room too! Yay OG floors!
I love it! I feel like guest bedrooms are the best rooms to experiment because you don't have to look at it every day if you don't want to. More dark academia please! It's been my favorite style
I totally agree!
The room's colour scheme is so soothing and the vibe is very elegant with the beautiful wallpaper. The rich dark colour also made the room look larger.
The room was executed very straightforward, which gave me lots of confidence to do this myself.
Okay....this is in my top five of the spaces. Right now just my FAVORITE!!
I was JUST creating a dark and moody pintrist board! I’m considering a similar “dark green”/bluish wall. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This room is gorgeous! There's finally a way to describe my style! I have this eclectic mix of antique and modern and gothic and sweet, and I think this sums it up perfect! "Dark Academia" 😊
I don’t think that dark color goes with Danie, shes been doing airy for the whole house :/ I can see her changing the color in the future.
Oh i really hope she does. It turned out to be an okay room BUT nothing like those really awesome Danie styled rooms. Pls danie turn this room whenever you feel like 😬
I tnink it became claustrophobic. 😢
She posted 3 weeks ago that she loved the fact that the room is moody. Sometimes people want something really different than the rest of the rooms especially in a room that won't be used all the time (it's a guest room) so she tried something really different there.
I wouldn't want to stay in the room. Good it is for sleeping.
Helloooo!!! I know this is an old video, but I have been seeing this all over color trend; ceiling and all, for quite some time, and I am a huge fan!!! I am only about 10 minutes into the video, but in the images I’ve seen where this is done, I feel like the rooms always look bigger and more modern and very in the “now”!! I haven’t seen anything even close to the end result yet, but I think you made a fantastic choice with the bold, all over color!! My husband and I are getting ready to move into our own very first home, and I can not WAIT to play with color and not have to be accountable to anyone but myself for the first time ever!! We have been renting the same single family house for 17 years and our landlord has been very strict and no fun at all. The best part about what you’re doing, is that if you’re not in love with it, it’s just paint and very easily can be changed back to anything you want at any time!! Have fun and experiment with color! I can not WAIT to see how this transforms your guest bedroom!!! -Nora
Oh my god, I absolutely loooove how this space turned out! I trusted your vision and the painted ceiling looks sooo good, such a cozy, moody room. And yeah, there's deffinitely an English vibe to it! Great job!
I’m with Danie. I don’t love the doors and ceiling being green. It’s overbearing. It would look good with a warm wood accented ceiling :) Nice decor choices though!
There Artist & All Artist Need escapes from Reality ✔️💯 Love this Dark Moody Escape
Especially since Dani's Mom & Dania Both as stayed they couldn't wait to escape into that room... as it came to fruitation... The Dark , against the Light as Artist, Creators, Designers; Opposites attract !! When an Artist & empath Burnout is reason they distance themselves into a Farm... when constantly coming up with new ideas... Dania is A deeply motivated Artist As an Artist I also have given myself for Eons Spots to escape into my creativity & Away from People's Opinions... She did love it by the end of remake
@@sandieedward8214 You Rock!
First time disappointed 😞. In my opinion, I think you missed the mark on that "old lady" wall paper and also that "country hanging wall rack". Neither one goes with the "Dark Academia " theme much less "farmhouse " vibe. IMO, a rich, textured wall paper for headboard and wall rack in brass or darker wood, maybe with metal hooks, would have been more cohesive with the rest of your design 🤔
agreed - and I wish all of the various wood tones tried to match the dark and moody vibe! I think the space could've looked a lot better if the end table wood tone was repeated throughout the room. I am in love with the paint color though.
Can't wait till see the Dani remodel Only the furniture is salvageable.
Was so thankful that there was no pink with pom-poms, however, the opposite end of the spectrum didn't work either. Sorry....it just doesn't match the rest of Danie & Geoff's house. Kudos to you for trying something different, but, in the space, it just doesn't work.
Everyone in the comments is loving it and I’m here like “nope...” 😂
I see ooodles of criticism. I like what they're calling "dark academia" and it can even work mixed with boho, but this room was a master class in how to get each aspect wrong.
Hideous right? I'd kill somebody who did that to my walls and I had to paint 5 coats over it. Who the hell wants dark and moody?
@@anneporter123 I mean ‘dark and moody’ is fine but... the execution of it was just not it for me ://
@@fthurman yes, the execution just wasn’t it for me
A guest room should be like this. It’s a room that once in a While you’ll stay. It’s new to you it’s as a guest yourself
This. Is. So. Gorgeous! At first I thought painting the whole room in such a dark colour would "strike it dead" (literally translated from german), I love dark colours and am thus very positively surprised that it works so fantastically! I love the entire style of this room with its little antiques and the cushy chair and the bold wallpaper!
Thank you so much for sharing this!
This is the dark-academia-inspired room of my dreams! I love it!
While I do like the room I feel it doesn’t go with the rest of her house
I think a guest room is a great place to break from a whole-house theme.
I agree, also the color is super dark for a small space like that.
Love it! Like a really old fashioned Hotel room or bnb🫶🏻
I LOVE DARK ACADEMIA!!!! And honestly, I'm so impressed with how this came out considering it's so far from Alexandra's own style! Also, that colour is EVERYTHING
It’s elegant AND cozy - a difficult combo to pull off. Beautiful!
I don’t usually comment, but you are growing so much! I feel unqualified to say that since I am NOT a classically trained decorator but I do decorate my home and I am a mom and watching you, and Danie, grow in your craft makes me so happy! Congratulations to you both!
Neither one of them are classically trained decorators.
@@lynnconroy8 so?
Yees, they have grown so much!
Loving the term Dark Academia! Describes my style much better than my own attempt with "cave library" 😂
Lmao!!
I think you should put the sheepskin on the bench, and a purple throw blanket on the bed. It would look beautiful with the wallpaper. The colours go wonderful together!
Love the dark, moody academia makeover. The floral wallpaper was definitely an inspired touch, and I love how you complemented everything with the vintage accessories like the lanterns, books, and pictures.
Hi, Alexandra! I don’t normally comment but after seeing a surprising number of negative comments so early after posting I wanted to say I really appreciate you trying a new style! Your commenters are always pushing you to do something different and this is definitely it and super trendy right now. It’s true that it doesn’t go with the rest of danie’s house but she was happy with the result and called it a getaway so I don’t think viewers need to get hung up on the statement of the room. It’s great to see you challenging yourself and becoming a more diverse designer! Experimentation is key to any creative journey.
I don’t think people are being negative as they are just not agreeing with some of her choices and have different opinions, of which they are entitled to. Many of the “negative comments” also compliment her trying something new. But people are allowed to not like something or agree with a design choice and not be a “hater.”
@@hannahjacobs1014 I have definitely seen some very negative and downright rude comments in the comment section, I think people are entitled to their opinion but you don't always have to be so rude. You can be constructive without being mean!
@@kayla-uy9eb ok.... but most arent. And that was the point.
@@hannahjacobs1014 I watched the video within 20 min of posting and at that point around half of the comments were negative, and not all were constructive. Quite a few commented specifically on not being happy that she did a different style. I’m supportive of constructive criticism but if half the comments on your video are telling you they don’t like what you posted sometimes even the helpful criticism can burn a bit, so I offered a bit of support. I don’t know if Alexandra reads her comments that early on but in case she did I wanted her to know her efforts were appreciated. Thankfully they comments have turned more positive and constructive since then.
The colour of the paint + the wallpaper was such a stunning combo!!! The room turned out interesting, beautiful, and unique. Perfect for a guest bedroom experience
The room really looked elevated and classy after the change.
I’m on the fence about it.feels like you sucked the light out of the room.I liked the color loved the wall paper, but not all over.sorry
Same. I don't know if you saw Dani's final room on the other channel but that was so beautiful and bright.
I didn't like the original colors but it looked so much brighter... It was actually nicer.
I just don't get why did you paint the lower part of the wall only to fully wallpaper it? Waste of time and paint. But I really like the room!
I guess incase there were any gaps between (which there are), they wouldnt stand out as much
I was wondering the reason for doing that as well.
Maybe the wallpaper was late in getting to them? Painted just in case.
I think the wallpaper was a surprise for Danie.
Maybe they changed their minds after the fact? They were like, “oh god, this looks too dark and bland. Let’s do an accent wall!”
I LOVE the stunning dark academia style mixed with the cottage/farmhouse style. It is what I have been trying to do in my house. I love the use of antique and vintage furniture.... especially since I am trying to reuse old furniture, instead of getting new furniture, so i don't hurt our environment .
I would LOVE to see you incorporate Dark Academia, Farmhouse, French Country, English Cottage and Shabby Chic styles in your makeovers. AS I love to comfortable, old world and green vibe they give to a room/home.
Stunning makeover which I will use as inspiration in my own little Australian cottage.
Thank you Alexandra
Janelle (Warrandyte, Australia)
The paint and wallpaper really worked well with all the accessories.
I love the Dark Academia look. I may have to find a room in my home for this .
I’ll always love all the pinks and bright colors, but damn, this room is gorgeous 😍
You make me want to go buy a house with slanted ceilings lol This has all the vibes of a maid's quarters in the 1800s! Absolutely love 💕
I love the paint color and the moody/cozy vibe, applauding the courage to jump off the cliff of all white walls/pink touches/tassels...I would not call any of this Old World but I think the nightstands work in a WWII UK sort of way, I can see Danie doing one of her accents...The expanding coatrack, basket, bedding, bench, and other touches...not so much. Maybe those were an attempt to fuse farmhouse with dark academia? That paint color demanded totally different bedding. The rug would have been great in another color that related somehow.
On the plus side, you are GLOWing, Alexandra! Your skin looks amazing and I so appreciate you being open to new styles. Please don’t be too discouraged there is a lot of good stuff here, it just seems like some of it belongs in other rooms.
That wallpaper - wow! Love how it turned out!
Granted, if her guests use CPAP machines (like she mentioned) they're going to prob want to move the actual kerosene lamp. Those hoses are sturdy & can knock things over.
Beautiful! Although, I’m leery of the Kerosene lamp in such a tight space considering the sleeping equipment needs of those that will utilize the space.
I love the old floors and the wall color. I’d wax the floor before putting down the rug so it would preserve the floor a little. Then touch up the areas that get walked on and the wax wear down. It really brings out the beauty of the old wood. I used to wax the floors in the heavy traffic areas once a year for a client I used to clean for. It just made the wood pop with really minimal effort.
I'm obSESSSSing over that Salamander color!
I liked the concept of this but wrong space/wrong house i think. The clash of wood tones and the light wash on the wall paper really skewed it for me.
This was excellent. I always love seeing you two together
That salamander colour is so gooooood
I LOVE this room! I wish more people were brave enough to have design choices like this
For me, the piece de resistance, is the lighting! Great job!
This is SUCH a vibe. I love this so much!!!!
The greeny blue colour is so beautiful
I love dark, moody, goth ❤
Love the dark academia style. It's looks fantastic
Of course I loved this make over. You turned that boring looking room into warm and cozy and also inviting. I love the style of your decor.
Dark and moody. I love the color.
I'm a deep winter but I love that color and scheme on my person and in my space. I love it
I can really appreciate the beauty of this room but I don’t know that I could have a room so dark. I think it would bring down my mood. But, it’s beautiful.
Yes color does affect one's mood. Too dark for me as well...like living in a cave.
Where did those overalls come from?? I need them!
I love this color. Moody in the best way but cozy too. I like the departure from the normal pink and neutrals.
We were introduced t Audible when my husband was diagnosed with ALS. He could pull up a book on his device-assisted computer. Audible was a Godsend then and I am still using it today to listen to books while driving, etc.
One of my fave makeovers of yours so far, tbh I was getting bored of beige and pink, so yes please more different looks like this 😍❤
Love this look and that you got to play with a style we don’t see as often. The color is absolutely beautiful and something that I would’ve been to scared to try without seeing the finished look. Beautiful!
More of these luscious colors please!!
I love dark and moody rooms 😍
Alexandra, I feel like you lvled up. Amazing job!!
It doesn't flow with what Danie has going on in the rest of the house. Color is too dark. Made the space smaller. Some of the decor pieces didn't go together in my opinion 🤷♀️
I bet 100$ In couple months she will redo it
You absolutely right btw lmao
SO EXCITED about this collaboration!!!!! 😁😁😁
I think this room turned out beautiful, which surprised me because I don't like dark walls. Nice job!! God Bless!!
