- Rich Urban Bikers. I talk about the term "RUB" and my thoughts on what I think it really means for the folks using it, and how some parts of the term have no more relevance. Have you heard people using it to talk badly about other riders?
I guess I like the word "folks". I actually lost count of how many times I said it.

At this point, a RUB is anyone who can afford to buy a Harley and actually maintain it.

I ride a 2016 BMW R1200 GSA. I wear textile gear, and have ridden about 340,000 miles since 1998. Am I a RUB? Seriously, I am enjoying your channel. Respect to all who ride!
Thanks! Ha! I'm sure folks would call me a RUB - I've worked my butt off to improve my situation and served my country, paid my own way through college. Wont apologize for doing alright. That said, I was fortunate enough to have great parents and no real misfortune.
when me and my brothers call someone a "RUB" its not so much about their status, its the guys who walk up while we are talking about the things we are doing or have done to our rides, and that guy says something like "yeah I just dropped my bike at the dealership to have this or that done to it" while they have the harley logo running from their neck to their toes lol
It's very prevalent as RUB's represent the majority of new Harley purchases today, and are the ones keeping their boutique stores in business. Most of these riders on their big $40k+ Street Queens don't even recognize a vintage Harley like mine when they are passing by it, and hence don't wave. I enjoy getting the laugh.
You’ve nailed it. Honestly, it’s fairly obvious that Harley’s prices are driving a product market fit for what has been traditionally defined as a RUB.

The old riders came from a time when bikes weren't reliable. They took pride in keeping them running. They wore greasy clothes and smelled like gasoline and gear oil. If they wanted a faster bike, they modified them. Safety gear was a pair of work boots and leather gloves. Ever since the 60s, media portrayed them as criminals. Some enjoyed the attention and exaggerated their "biker" persona. Then they had kids who were raised up thinking this was normal. The "culture" grew. Magazines. Movies. Stereotypes. Most bikes became easier and safer to ride, but "The Faithful" were reluctant to give up the old ways. Panheads, Shovels. The EVO engine came out, and it was suddenly safe enough for people who wanted to look like bikers. People with money could finally buy a reliable bike that at least LOOKED like the old badass oil leakers, without having to pay their dues as mechanics, fitters, welders, or painters. Pretty much like the impressionable people who wanted to be country line dancers after "Urban Cowboy." 😃The old guys looked on with amusement and distain as "wannabees" bought Softails, all black outfits, put a James Dean swagger in their walk, and lowered their voices an octave while belly laughing over a Stella Artois. Being a "biker" is all some people have. It's their religion, identity, and community. They don't like it when "the Unworthy" butt in. It's human nature.
Great comment LShort. Thank you for sharing that. I get it. If I had it my way I’d be riding and sitting in my garage working on bikes. I’ve gotten obsessed. I got into working on them this year. I’m up at 4 AM and in the garage. Now I go to my day job with oil under my nails, and my wife complains I smell like exhaust fumes all day. I’ve never been more content.

Your overthinking your rub status
Proud to have worked hard to achieve something from a very blue collar family. If I'm considered a RUB I'm good with that. I'm just saying that these labels are stupid and overly sensitive when Harley created the RUB with the effort to be exclusive, raise prices, and price their main demographic out of their bikes.
Riding in the winter is asking for electrical problems.

Do people still use that term? I heard it first somewhere in the 80's then it seems it fell out of use. But the way H-D is trying to manipulate the market there days, I'm guessing that term will come into use again, as not many people can afford 40-50K $$$ for an underpowered, impractical motorcycle from a company that is a follower of technology and performance and definitely not a leader.
I hear it quite a bit, especially in the MC community.
@@riddlerrides It must be area specific because I rarely to almost never hear it. Even at meets like Sturgis where so many trailer their bikes I don't hear it. FYI, on the trailer issue, here's a good one. A few years ago I was on my way to Sturgis and stopped at a motel for the night a few hundred miles from Sturgis. One of the other people that were checking in the same time as me asked why there were so many trailers in the motel parking lot. The desk clerk said they allowed people to park their trailers there so they could ride the last couple of hundred miles into Sturgis so they could "play the role" of being "real" bikers. Too funny. Actually I done both different times, ridden and trailered to Stiurgis. Generally I've found if I ride 2-up to Sturgis that by the time it's time to leave, between myself and my lady we've bought and picked up so much stuff, there's no room on the bike, so we have to use a courier service which ends up being a hassle and expensive, therefore the trailer.
RUBs are pretenders. "Posers" might be a better description. A A Harley doesn't make you a tough guy, it makes you a guy who likes Harleys. So don't act like a tough guy, be a guy who just likes Harleys. And just because someone else owns a Harley, THEY ARE NOT YOUR BROTHER! Don't "bro" people just because you got a bike.
Yeah , “Poser” is what I think works best. The only thing is, no matter how much you work on your bike yourself and no matter how much you can handle your bike on the street, if you’re a clean cut rider with a great job, you’re going to come across as a RUB.
